Why are the victims in hostage executions doing nothing?

To be more specific in a lot of the hostage/prisoner execution videos whether its in Iraq or Syria, the victims lay down and do absolutely nothing.
The victims usually have only thier hands tied up, only thier legs tied up, or all of thier limbs are perfectly free. The victims obey the orders given by thier captors and the captors kill them with no difficulty.
None of them are pleading with thier captors to spare them, running away, or at least trying to punch or kick thier captors and put up a good fight before meeting thier end. Instead they lay down and just take it like in the ISIS execution videos.
The victims usually outnumber thier captors, and if they all revolt and put up a fight they could easily overpower them. And yet they all do nothing.
Is this really how someone is suppose to act in a hostage/prisoner execution?
Why do they just give up instead of trying to make something happen to survive, is it a mental thing where they give up hope and just accept defeat?
