Increase in School Lunch Prices
Posted by: Michelle O. ()

For the second time in five years, FCPS is raising the price of its breakfast and lunch meals. In elementary schools, breakfast will cost $1.75 and lunch will cost $2.90 (up from $1.50 and $2.65, respectively). In middle and high schools, breakfast will cost $1.75 and lunch will cost $3.00 (up from $1.50 and $2.75, respectively). The cost of milk and soy milk will not change.

Of course, students who are eligible for free and reduced price meals will not be charged for meals.

Your last sentence doesn't make any sense. You're saying that students eligible for reduced price meals will not be charged. They will be charged, but at a reduced price.

The food price increase is to guarantee your kids get healthy meals no matter how bad they taste or how few calories are in it. If you don't like it tough. As we all know you don't know how to feed your kids that is the schools and government's responsibility. I know for one I would never eat those healthy meals, but then again I eat like a cow because I can and you can't!

They have been waiving the reduced price and giving out free meals for all. Terrific leadership decision.
Freebies breeds dependency and apathy.

Menu liberally and healthy, Michelle Obama based. It should be good, tasty and costly to those who can afford and free to those who can't.

You are typical white liberal accept shit that foisted by the democrats and liberal FCPS on you to show you are in line, then complain privately on the FFXU. You should shut the fuck up and get what you asked for.

If you are brave post your name to show your true disappointment. Complain to the FCPS. Put a petition out there and sign it with your true name. Hell no you fucking coward ass liberals. These free riding negroes and Hispanics will be your master one day at your tacit expense. Keep paying and shut up.

Just drive over to the school in your infiniti on the way to the health club and turn in your application for free lunches. NOBODY EVER.... EVER VERIFIES ANYTHING ON THEM. As long as your board of supervisors give the system all the money they want, they continue to do things the easy way, not the right way.

Every kid should get free lunch. Remember that education costs nothing, it pays and pays.

Only 1 word to describe the pathetic loserism on this thread. The 3 of your who are talking to yourselves are truly pathetisad. Why you fuckin care so much is beyond me if a portion of kids get a free lunch. They are fuckin kids you moron. BTW for the record, my parents both worked two jobs when I was a kid, we are all legal US Citizens, and I got a reduced lunch because unlike you fuckin silver spoon douchebag lacoste wearing cunts I didn't grow up with a golden dick up my ass.

If you dont like policies in Fairfax, get the fuck out, who the fuck said you should live here in the first place.

This is effectively another Democratic tax increase on hard-working Fairfax taxpayers to cover the cost of the federal government's failure to police our borders. Have the cost of food gone up this much? No.

Funny, while typing the above, I had CNN on the TV. A commercial came on for Cox Cable telling viewers that if they receive free and reduced lunches, they might be eligible for "Connect to Compete," which is discounted internet service. Guess I'm paying for that too.

I guess I know why the workforce participation rate is the lowest ever, or almost ever. Why would someone get out of bed to do a low wage job? But those are important for them to get ahead.

What will the extra money be funding? Where does it go? This is about an 18% increase. Has food gone up 18% in the past year?

Yes they fucking do you whining sacks of unemployed shit parrots who can't come up with an original complaint if a gun was pointed to your head.

In the middle of the year they send out income checks, and if you live with family and are unemployed they count your families income, even if your family doesn't want to feed you or your children. Making sure a child isn't homeless is used against you when it comes to eligibility. So no one is getting free rides. People fucking scam Home Depot all the time, better shut down Home Depot too!

Fuck you goddamn Calvinist, Jew and atheist assholes who are the real ones driving the Infinitis and actually owning it whining about every goddamn thing because your wealth makes you ungrateful and self-centered.

Back in my day we put kids to work. They didn't go to school and get a free ride from the government. We made them go down into the coal mine and they got black lung by the age of 6 and THEY LIKED IT. Now the goddamn government steals MY HARD-EARNED MONEY (that I made from making orphans work 12 hour days in my sweatshop) to not only educate these brats for free, but feed them too! It's chaps my ass to know that my tax dollars are going to feed some dirty faced little street urchin WHO SHOULD BE WORKING instead of being a lazy little punk!

Were you raised in 1840?

Here's the reality, of course some of the kids getting free lunches should be getting free lunches but are 30% of families in Fairfax unable to provide peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I grew up in a middle class household and usually got a PBJ, some chips, and an apple or banana. You can make that lunch for less than a buck today.

There is effectively no verification. The max number of FARM families checked is 3%. If the families are not qualified, or do not respond, they only lose the benefit. There are no penalties. Schools have an incentive to have the max number of students in the program because federal aid is based on it.

Raising the price 18% is an effective tax/spending increase on all Fairfax tax-paying residents. Federal government pays for FARM lunches. So when Fairfax raises prices that much, the federal government, which taxpayers fund, pays something like 30% of the increase. Parents pay the rest.

When mass numbers of illegal immigrants are receiving much this aid, the cost of their lunches are effectively being passed to parents and taxpayers. So that must be counted as a cost of the federal government's failure to police the border.

Again, this is not an attack on immigrant children. They are just trying to learn and don't have any say whether that is happening here or elsewhere. It's not an attack on immigrant parents, who, like all of us, just want the best for their kids. It is a condemnation of our federal government, and elected officials like Barack Obama and Gerald Connolly.

So the parents who buy lunch are subsidizing the system?

I would also like to know how the mylunchmoney.com system works. I know that we paid a fee to use that system and that always irked me. Does FCPS get a kickback from that private website? Where does that money go? I know it's "optional" to use it and I could have just given my kid money every day, but it seems like such an easy web application to set up (why doesn't FCPS offer this web application themselves?).
