I've heard good things about Blue Ridge Arsenal's classes. You can go into any gun store and talk to the guys working there for a better second opinion.

The best course is at the NRA, over on Rt 50 and Rt 66.

Legally, you don't have to take a course. They have to have a reason to deny you a permit. But taking the NRA course is a good idea.

While that may be true, what are the other ways that one can satisfy the requirement that you are proficient with handguns?

The court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by one of the following, but no applicant shall be required to submit to any additional demonstration of competence:

Just open carry like every other free citizen does.

Remember, you cannot conceal a handgun in places that serve booze, you MUST open carry. Governor Kaine has a bill before him to restore concealed carry in resteraunts that serve booze (remember folks, even Chuck E' Cheese serves beer) while clarifying that CHP holders may not consume alcohol while armed. Kaine has stated he will veto the bill. Gov. Kaine made his option clear that he preferrers that Virginians openly carry their firearms and the of drinking alcohol is OK while doing so. He stated that this is a "public safety issue". I can only infer that he believes that having a firearm strapped to your side and clearly visible will deter any attempt at robbing restaurants. The governor must have been giving some thought to the recent rash of restaurant robberies in Oakland California, where almost no one outside of law enforcement is allowed to carry a firearm in public. It took the Oakland police months and dozens of restaurant robberies to finally put an end to them. Governor Kaine is being proactive in letting would be robbers know that in Virginia restaurants, you don't stand a chance. I applaud governor Kaine for finally stepping up for gun rights. Even though this might hinder his political ambitions once he is out of office. It's good to have a governor that puts the public's safety first at the expense of his political career.

Did anyone watch 60 minutes on Sunday night?

During the segment about Bobby Jindal, they showed him walking into a government building that had signs on all the doors, "DANGEROUS WEAPONS PROHIBITED".

I am still trying to figure out what constitutes a "dangerous" weapon. The only thing I can come up with is if your hand gun is not properly maintained or defective in some way, that might make it dangerous. Otherwise, isn't a properly maintained gun safe? If it isn't prone to going off spontaneously, it seems pretty safe to me.

Obviously, the sign is meant to encourage a specific way of thinking -- that guns are "dangerous". It is obviously an example of politically influencing how people think, based on an agenda.

I believe you are right. "Dangerous weapon" is just double-speak.

Edit to say, apparently "dangerous weapon" is used as a statutory defintion for a specific class of weapons, for the purposes of creating laws and codes to govern their possession and use.
