Outdoor cats

I have a question that I can't seem to find an appropriate answer for...

Is it legal in Fairfax County to have an outdoor cat? I live in a townhouse community and my neighbor's cat is constantly on my deck and tries to get in my house. I wouldn't mind so much if the cat didn't pee on the deck or scratch at the deck and create wood shavings. Just wondering if it is legal to have a roaming cat since I know you can't have a roaming dog.

Thanks!

Nope, not legal - has to be under control.

"Under control" does not necessarily mean "on a leash".

I take it completely back - just checked the County wbesite - cats are free birds.

Where I used to live cats were required to be under control - not here!

The only thing worse than cats are cat owners.
They think everyone should love their fur ball like they do. Their houses smell like a litter box(and they don't even smell it). They don't mind when they throw up or hack up a furball on their furniture. They think they have to save all the cats in the world. They put their furry friends before their own family. They think everything the cat does is amazing. They take like 1000's of pictures of them doing the same thing over and over. They actually believe the cats talk to them and smile at them. The funny thing is that those cats could give a shit about them. They are just looking for who will feed them and scope the shit out of their box.

How about putting something on your deck that would scare the cat away? Perhaps a dog? Really, what if you tried some type of repellent that would keep the cat away...just can't think what would work the best.

Technically you could call the animal control agency to come and remove the cat as it is destorying your property and is out of control. God only knows if it is current on its shots. They will come out and remove it but there are only a few officers that work the entire county so it could take awhile.

Does the kitty have a collar? If it does, you could get the owner's information from it and have a friendly (yes, friendly) chat about their pet. They may not realize that it's peeing on your deck and clawing your shit up.

No collar or hostile owners? Definitely follow the legal suggestions "meow" or "Price" gave.

I had the same issue with my neighbors cat, it wasn't peeing on my deck but it was constantly in my backyard or sitting on the fence making my dog bark constantly which in turn made my other neighbors unhappy. I told the cat's owner about this and I didn't see the cat for a few days but then it was back to normal. I found that an air soft gun works wonders, it is not illegal to discharge, it is not deadly but it provides a good sting.

invest in one of those, then wait for felix to come traipsing around un-invited.

you may have to get crafty in your methods of dispensing discipline though. cats are as dumb as they are smart. you blast him a couple times and he may not come back to that spot, but will take a different route into your yard, so youll have to be vigilant for a while.

eventually, hopefully, the stupid animal will get the message.

I have taken cups of water and splashed the cat but it doesn't work. It should be against the law to have an outdoor cat on hot days like today anyways! I can't leave my dog outside in this heat so why can their cat be fine. Not to mention the cat hisses at me and has tried to scratch me before. Ughhh

srsly...
outdoor cat + in YOUR yard + trying to scratch you = offending cat pelted with rocks or sticks.
if nuisance cat owning neighbor takes issue, tell him to F off. well, tell him youre defending yourself from his aggressive cat and if the roles were reversed, and your dog was in his yard all the time barking and making biting motions towards him, what would he do?

For all those that are bitching about outdoor cats, you should be aware that most outdoor cats reduce the rodent population DRAMATICALLY. This includes mice, rats, voles, squirrels, and even some birds. And if there are less rodents, then there are less snakes. Trust me, there are lots of black snakes, garden snakes, and the like around, they're just better at hiding from you than you think.

And no, there's not much you can do about the nuisance pet. Animal control will only take the animal if you've caught it, and then they want you to bring it in. Unless you think it's rabid, then they'll be right out.

My neighbors cat was very good at killing the song birds in my back yard. The cat wouldnt even eat the birds it just killed them for fun and left the bodies for me to pick up. I encourage my dog to chase the cats whenever they get in my yard. In my opinion the cats do much more harm than good.

There are no laws for cats and leashes or cats wearing collars with tags. The only collar you can buy for a cat is those break away collars and most cats can easily remove that type of collar, and they usually do. Cats climb trees; we don’t need cats all over the place lynching themselves by their collars. Every veterinarian in the country will tell you not to put a collar on a cat-their necks are not as strong as dogs and it could really harm them. Again, there are no leash laws for cats in Fairfax, Virginia, or anywhere in this country. Cats roam and climb trees, it is in their nature. Get over it.

LOL not the two right next door to me. i had to invest a hard earned $1.99 for two victor mouse traps to kill the two mice living in my garage. the very same garage i would walk into and catch one of the offending free roaming felines in several times a week. they do kill things, mostly songbirds and chipmunks, of which I dont want killed. reason for said stupid ass cat to be in my garage was to try and go after the wrens that made a nest in it. they also climb on my car, as evidenced by their grubby paw prints all over the hood, windshield, and roof. i really appreciate the scratches their claws put in my paint too.

sometimes i wish one of the resident hawks, or fox, or raccoons, or opossum, get ahold of them and make them "disappear".....

I previously noted the marked increase in population of chipmunks around my house - no more!

The feral (this time) cat population, among probably other predators, has knocked down the chipmunks to the invisible stage.

I was hoping to see a black rat snake or two around my back yard this year. Not yet.

The humane thing to do is simply get a spray bottle and spray the cat with a little water each time it comes around. That is what many cat owners do inside their own homes to teach a cat not to mess with something. It is reasonably harmless but gets the point across.

Relax, y'all. Invest in some fox pee and spray the area around your yard. Talk to the owner. Stomp at the cat, or spray it with water (NOT A HOSE). Do not, for the love of God, poison a cat. Seriously, what's wrong with you?

P.S. every cat owner I've ever met in my life has never believed you should love their cat just as much as they do.

P.P.S. cats leave the birds because they think you can't hunt for yourself. It's affection, I'm afraid.

Where's the fun in poisoning a feral cat? Here in spotsy they are thick as theives. CB caps from a locked breech rifle with an oil can on the end are so quiet that the sound of the hammer dropping is more audible than the report itself. Some catnip, twelve pack of slurricaine, a lawn chair and a box of CBs makes for a highly entraining afternoon! I have dozens of scruffy feral cat hides tanning in my garage right now. Remember, there's always more than one way to skin a cat!

Section 41.1-2-15. - Permitting animals to trespass.

Animal trespass? Good luck getting the county to enforce that! There are laws on the books but they are rarely enforced. Fairfax County hasn’t ticketed anyone for leash violations in years.
Here’s a better option... hose with sprinkler on back deck. Set it so it’s triggered by a motion detector (lots of options online). The cat will quickly learn to avoid your deck. If you spray the cat yourself then it will only avoid the deck when you’re around.

This cat is "feral" because somebody who moved out of your neighborhood did not want to keep it for what ever reason. So they just left it to fend for itself. Your soft-hearted neighbor found it hanging out on her porch and began feeding it. However, if she has a house filled with (https://www.perigold.com/gateway.php?&url=https://www.perigold.com&refid=GX390408406488 World's Finest Furniture that only a queen would cherish, she will not---and I emphasize, WILL NOT--allow the cat to come in and live in her house. You have already witnessed the reason why. Therefore just put a small animal trap outside on your porch outfitted with a bowl of water and a bowl of tuna in there, wait until kitty goes in to feast, trips the door and gets cauget, then put trap + kitty in the trunk of your car and make a little trip down to the local animal shelter. They will spay or neuter kitty and will find someone out in the country with a barn that needs to be kept mouseless who will be happy to accommodate said unhousebroken kitty.

Why am I not allowed to enjoy my profession? at least I dont waste those beautiful pelts like the PETA euthanasia hypocrites. Quite the opposite! Between my Etsy and eBay I make over $3,000 a month selling mounted feral cats, feral cat throw rugs and feral cat winter hats! It is clear you do not understand the law, manmade or natural. A quick Lexis Nexis search would have explained the law to you, but you couldn't even do that.

First, cats are not people, so "people laws" are not enforceable on cats. Unlike dogs, there are no leash, harness, or enforced control laws for cats in most jurisdictions. There are no laws where a cat owner is responsible for the damage the cat caused, or the cat killing another animal. A cat by nature is preditorial, and exploring.

The landmark animal rights case of Buckle v. Holmes held that an owner of a cat is not liable for the damage caused when the cat trespasses.

also, in the quintessential “Cat and the Canary” case of McDonald v. Jodrey 8 Pa. C.C. (PA.) the court stated that the owner of a cat is not responsible for the “predatory” habits of the species, only for the known “mischievous tendencies” of the individual animal. In other words, a cat owner is responsible if the cat has a habit of deep scratching people, and the owner does nothing, but the owner cannot be held responsible for the cat acting on its own natural instincts.

Both these informed and researched decisions are cited in courts around the country in order to educate plaintiffs, jurors, and judges on the natural instinct and natural law of cats. Remember, dogs have been domesticated for 40,000 years, cats, at best, 3,000 years.

Fairfax does not impound cats. They check to make sure they are fixed, and then return them were they were found.

The libtards earmark the "green new deal" to line their own pockets while millions of birds are struck by wind turbines and vaporized by vast solar farms. They euthenize millions of healthy pets while they arrest Amish folks for refusing to sterilize their livestock and continuing to allow them to follow their instincts. Home breeding is cruel and only a veterinarian can kill strays and then they must waste the remains! The cultural brainwashing is so complete that even the venerable DAJAX has been suckered in, berating poor little me for nothing more than protecting native Chipmunks and the Virginia state bird, the Cardinal, from invasive, destructive feral cats. Bounty hunting was a full time job for much of history, from wolves and coyotes to prarie dogs and escaped/stolen cattle. I don't even enjoy the luxury of a govt. bounty so I have to sell fricking fur to hipsters so that I can afford to protect the environment full time! I hope you're sorry DAJAX for your quick judgement and harsh words. I do hope you will buy a mount or a hat as penance!

Just a bit peeved by the glee I felt you were expressing , but I can see what your saying , Im man enough to say I apologize and your a good man for agreeing your point with reason and I totally agree with the comments about the green new deal liberal liars whom just want to get into lucrative energy deals with govt help to line their pockets and raise everyone's energy costs while dissolving current energy producers like King Coal that are Americas National Defense Ace In The Hole

DAJAX In time we all may use power from the wind but that's in time and that time has not come and will not be here for at least 30 to 50 more years hence

It is estimated 366,000 birds are killed by wind turbines each year, and 700 or so are vapoized by solar farms. Most solar farms don't use the set up and technology that you speak of.

Stray dogs are relatively harmless to the environment but they are easier to catch than cats and have lower birth rates. Stray dogs are becoming a rare sight these days because animal control has become a highly effective Nazi death squad euthenasia, sterilization, chips the works! Meanwhile cats are wreaking havoc at whim:

"Cats kill up to 3.7B birds annually. Cats that live in the wild or indoor pets allowed to roam outdoors kill from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental U.S. each year, says a new study that escalates a decades-old debate over the feline threat to native animals."

Yeah, it's legal you just have to make sure you're responsible. You have to keep a steady supply of the best kitten food and water for your friend so he doesn't go hungry. Also a nice heated bed would be great too this time of year.

Cool thread! Some photos are really funny:) I like cats and I want to find something unusual, what interesting breeds do you know? I read about white Night Siberians, quite interesting cats, really cute. As I understood this breed is quite rare but also popular. I also read about siberian cat grooming on http://whitenightsiberians.com/txt/siberian-cat-shedding.php and in my opinion it is not so difficult! What do think?

I adore cats but I try to keep them indoors for their safety. But it affects my safety. Since I spend more time with them indoors I have to read more about their bites and how to treat them. Although, they don't do it often and don't bite deep.

Obviously this cat is neglected by its owners. I hardly think shooting it is appropriate. Why don’t you stop shooting off your mouth and keep your nasty and cruel opinions to yourself. Moron

After several generations born and raised without human contact feral cats become completely undomesticated. Fear of humans is a highly selected trait among those who evade re-capture for generations.

If you were to capture a few pregnant feral cats, you would have to separate the young very early and then select the tamest few of the litters to breed for a few more generations to fully restore domestication. See the Russian fox experiments for context.

Felis Catus is not native to North America and in combination with urban development they have wreaked havoc on the environment, outcompeting native predators such as bobcats, and mink and destroying populations of birds and small mammals.

In Australia they have bounties. Cry me a river snowflake

Hi Lisa, I have a cat. I think we would get along well together. Do you have big titties? Let me know
