The Route 50 Mega Project that has plagued drivers in Fairfax and Loudoun counties for nearly three years is nearing completion.

The project includes three new westbound lanes between Route 28 and Poland Road in South Riding (roughly 3.7 miles), which should be completed by November 2015. The three eastbound lanes should be open to traffic by the start of school in fall 2014, WTOP reports.

Reconstruction and widening of Route 50 from four lanes to six

Relocated utility lines

Widened and upgraded bridges

Paved 10-inch multi-use paths in both directions

Equipped crosswalks with pedestrian signals

Leveled roadway with more space between travel lanes

New layers of pavement to prevent potholes

The project also includes synchronized traffic signals at Avion Parkway, Lee Road, Pleasant Valley Roads, Poland Road, Stonecraft Boulevard, and Tall Cedars Parkway.

The $94.9 million project aims to relieve current and anticipated congestion caused by increased development in Loudoun County in recent years, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The project costs include $10 million for preliminary engineering, $19 million for right of way acquisition, $10.5 million for utility relocation, and $55.4 million for construction.
Route 50 carries approximately 62,000 vehicles per day.

"Paved 10-inch multi-use paths in both directions" ??

Why so wide? They could've saved millions by narrowing the multi-use paths down to 5 inches!
