Anyone lose a chicken? Animal control officers had their hands full last week corralling a brown hen on Route 1 in Alexandria.

The incident took place Monday in the 3300 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, where officers responded to the report of a stray chicken. Officers located the chicken and brought it to the animal shelter. The chicken is described as young female brown/buff.

It was just one of the recent calls handled by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s Animal Services Officers:

July 9:
•Unit block of East Myrtle St: Officers responded to the report of a sick raccoon. Officers located the raccoon and took it to the animal shelter where it was determined that its condition was severe and it was humanely euthanized.
•100 block of Wesmond Dr.: Officers responded to the report of an injured squirrel. Officers located the squirrel and took it to the animal shelter where it was determined that its injuries were severe and it was humanely euthanized

July 10:
•2500 block of North Van Dorn St.: Officers responded to the report of a stray cat in a utility room. Officers set a humane trap at the location but after six days were unable to capture the cat. Officers determined the cat had left the area.
•4300 block of Loyola Ave.: Officers responded to the report of an injured bird. Officers located the bird and transferred it to an area veterinarian for examination.
•200 block of Luna Park Dr.: Officers responded to the report of a stray dog. Officers located the dog and brought it to the animal shelter. The owner came forward and reclaimed the dog later the same day.

July 13
•300 block of North Union: Officers responded to the report of a stray dog. Officers located the dog and brought it to the animal shelter. The owner came forward and reclaimed the dog later the same day.

July 14
• Unit block of East Maple St.: Officers responded to the report of a stray dog. Officers located the dog and brought it to the animal shelter. The owner came forward and reclaimed the dog later the same day.

Is it legal to raise chickens in Alexandria? Last time I checked there are no poultry farms there, so this must have escaped from someone's yard.

I dont understand what everyone's problem is with chickens. Hens eat insects around your house and give you fresh eggs and meat that are far fresher than can be bought at the store. So what gives? Why all the hate towards chickens? It's not like anyone sets up a CAFO in their backyard so there is no odor. The manure is good for yards or can be composted and used as a soil enhancer/fertilizer in your garden. There is no odor associated with small numbers of chickens.

I lived in the County when chickens were allowed. This is a better place now.

If you want a farm, go buy a farm. Chickens have no place in a residential neighborhood.

Animals & Pets
In general, county rules allow residents to keep animals on their property, including cats, dogs, horses, livestock, and domestic fowl. Animals may not be kept on a residential property for commercial purposes. There also may be setback, location and permit requirements for barns and shelters for animals.

A residential property’s lot size also determines how many animals may be kept:

* * *
“Domestic Fowl
Fowl, such as chickens, ducks, turkeys, and geese, may only be kept on lots that are two acres or greater. They shall not exceed the ratio of one bird unit per one acre, with a bird unit defined as:

32 chickens = 1 bird unit
16 ducks = 1 bird unit
8 turkeys = 1 bird unit
8 geese = 1 bird unit
Only fowl six months or older are counted in the ratio"
