Anyone who works for FCPS will tell you that giving F's is discouraged. Teachers who give F's are often reprimanded by administrators. Teachers are coerced into giving students a 50% instead of a 0 when the kid hands in NOTHING. This data is not surprising at all to people who work for the county.

Yep, that's right. Since "Leave no kid Behind" was enacted some years ago, the school systems have worked to improved the grades. Since the students were scoring less, the school systems decided to "lower the standards". This way the kids at least pass and make it to college, where hopefully they will at last learn to read and write.

The main issue is that administrators are no longer supporting teachers who fail students who deserve to fail. Parents complain and the principals, instead of respecting the decisions of the teachers who show evidence that a student rightfully "earned" the F or low grade, will turn back the hands of time and allow "Johnny Sack-O-Shit" to redo or be allowed to complete a project that was due 2 months ago. (ONE EXAMPLE). So now teachers feel it is not worth the trouble and are bumping the grades up. Parents and students no longer care about learning. It is all about the grade so there precious child will get in to their chosen college. Never mind about the students learning a life lesson of failing and what it takes to succeed.

This is the first year they change the way they calculate final grades. that why F went down so much not because the students are doing their work

Yeah, welcome to American high schools. A large percentage go to college when they've no business doing so.

It's all about the graduation rates and the D/F rations. Schools want to look good by having NO failures and NO drop-outs. Despite large amount of students who barely come to school and don't meet the required standards to pass, teachers are constantly pressured in FCPS to pass these students. Why? Because it makes the school's numbers look better to the higher-ups in the county. There is NO integrity in education anymore.

"Who did America fight in the Revolutionary War?"

"a. Um, the French?
b. That's a good question, I don't know.
c. Countries
d. China
e. Wow, I feel really dumb; was it the French?
f. Ourselves, the north v. the south"

And ^^^^ isn't even the worst part. It gets much worse.

Mind you, these people are in >college<. Not that anyone is saying they're FCPS grads but Watters does mention University of Maryland.

The dumbing down of American will continue until people start to care what happens to kids in school and how their money and resources are used in education.
