Tips for Trash Collectors

We use American Disposal for trash collection and we're billed quarterly. I just noticed that on the payment slip, there's a section that says, "It's your choice to tip your workers," and there's spaces for Recycle Driver, Trash Driver, and Trash Helper.

Am I really supposed to tip them? I can see around the holidays but is this a thing - does anyone tip their trash collectors? I'm not trying to be ignorant, we're relatively new home owners. We always tip well at restaurants and when we get our hair cut and stuff like that, I've just never heard of tipping for household utility type stuff.

I have American Disposal too, I never tip them.

Oh yeah, pay annually, you can get a little discount.

American Disposal keeps raising prices - they're just as bad as AAA. They can afford to pay decent wages without asking me to tip them. Assholes!

I don't tip the trash guys and they still come get the trash. Not to worry.

My price has been the same for the past 3 years, every year they tell me it will go up. I just tell them okay then you can cancel my service, of course after that they keep the rate the same.

I would only tip them if they do something especially well.

I used AAA for years, American came around and offered me a very low rate, I took it, then AAA said you should have talked to us first. We would have met that price (a 50+% drop) to keep you. Oh well. Adios.

Adding a tip to your bill may be more efficient but it is unlikely the workers will know it comes from you.

Interesting...okay. Well I don't feel so bad about not tipping this time then. I'll give them a tip around the holidays this year.

This thread isn't what I thought it was going to be. However, I still have some tips for trash collectors:

- arrive consistently at the same time each week
- put my trash can back where you found it, not in my neighbor's driveway
- know your trash cans. They all may look alike, but they are not. Each is unique in its own way
- keep the yelling down, especially if you arrive before 6:00 a.m.
- if you don't take something I placed beside the trash can at least tell me why and how to properly dispose of it
- driver slower through the neighborhoods. I know you're on a schedule but these are residential areas

^ I'm going to write all that in the tips section on my next bill.

"American Disposal"? I haven't seen an American on a trash truck in over 20 years.

In our neighborhood in Middleridge, our trash men are extremely nice and friendly and everyone in the neighborhood always waves. Our culd de sac of about 9 houses, we pitch in everymajor government holiday. and get the a case a beer and normally $75 each. Its a crappy job and they do it well. We have seen spill a trash can and all three took more than 5 minutes to make sure every bit was cleaned up.

And before you say anything about, we are the type of people to tip our auto technicians, people who load our cars at sears, and we never tip less than %15 at restaurants. Pay it forward.

That's the least you can do. I would feel pretty bad too If I was on glorified welfare.

They also receive full pensions on top of making $65k a year.

I doubt they make $65K, but it does take a little bit of sense to maintain a Commercial Drivers License and DOT health card. Ever seen signs that say "CDL DRIVERS WANTED"? I see them often.

So, that CDL will always command a moderate wage.

Plus, maintaining a CDL is getting harder all the time. There is a new FMCSA rule about sleep apnea. If a CDL driver walks into the doctor for the physical, and has a BMI over a certain number (low 30s, I think), he or she is PRESUMED to have sleep apnea. That's right, a certain height/weight combo automatically means you have a disease!

If you want to keep your driving job, you have to submit to a sleep study at $1000 plus. Then, if they say you have sleep apnea, you have buy some sort of breathing machine for several hundred more bucks. If you don't use the fucking machine, the government knows and if you want to keep your job you have to hook yourself back up to the machine. Imagine having to let the fucking government into your bed to keep your job!

What happened to this fucking country?

This insanity will decrease the supply of CDL drivers even more, so maybe trash truck drivers may hit $65K someday.

They do make $65k a year. You come home smelling like rotten trash everyday. Five years ago they made that amount with a full pension, things could have changed.

What private company offers a "full pension" these days? Especially a small mom & pop like American Trash. There's no way.

Pensions are pretty much gov't jobs only. At the very best, they might offer some sort of 401K hocus pocus that can go poof at any moment.

Most people are at work when the trash guy comes by so they never see them. I'm retired so I do. About three times a year I hand the driver $20. Usually Christmas, a hot summer day, and when I have a lot of piles. They always happily take everything I put out, including stuff on the unapproved list such as logs or brush that's too long or not tied up. And they always wave and smile. Good people. Hard workers.

Oh, and I pay $69 per quarter on a three-year contract that I have renewed multiple times. So when the other guys knock on the door, I'm not interested.
