Committee: Most Central Americans’ Asylum Claims Immediately Approved

itizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data show that 65 percent of unaccompanied alien minors’ asylum applications were immediately approved by asylum officers in Fiscal Year 2014, according to a press release from the House Judiciary Committee. And most unapproved cases are later approved by an immigration judge. This means that the vast majority of aliens who seek asylum are now successful in their claims despite the fact that an internal Department of Homeland Security report says that 70 percent of asylum cases contain proven or possible fraud.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., commented on the new information:

“President Obama’s refusal to crack down on rampant asylum fraud is one of the many reasons we are witnessing a surge of Central Americans seeking to enter the U.S. illegally at the border. New data showing that the vast majority of Central Americans’ asylum claims are immediately approved will only worsen the situation along our southern border by encouraging more to come and take advantage of the situation. Our asylum laws are in place to help individuals who are facing truly serious persecution in their countries. However, while I was in the Rio Grande Valley earlier this month, law enforcement officials on the ground said that the vast majority of Central Americans arriving at our border come to meet up with another family member who is already in the United States illegally.

“President Obama has many tools at his disposal to stop this border crisis, including cracking down on fraudulent asylum claims and implementing tougher standards for preliminary asylum screenings. Unfortunately, he refuses to use these tools and instead makes the situation worse by refusing to enforce our immigration laws.”
The Committee notes that if a USCIS asylum officer does not approve an application, it is referred to an immigration judge where the applicant can try again. If the judge rejects the claim, the person can continue to appeal the case to the Board of Immigration Appeals or federal courts.

Approval rates by asylum officers increased from 28 percent in 2007 to 46 percent in 2013 while approval rates by immigration judges in affirmative cases increased from 51 percent in 2007 to 74 percent in 2013.

According to the release, "Once individuals are granted asylum, they have access to all major federal welfare programs."

Happily, question guy. Read through the news reports. Look at the State Department Country reports, look at the reports of Freedom House, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch. Talk to the kids, if you can. They'll tell you how their relatives are killed and the police do nothing. They'll tell you how the gangs will tell them that they are next. Look at the reports of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. All the info is out there. We can handle this, we have before, and the USA will be a stronger, even more exceptional country for it. Unless of course you're Irish. Then you don't need to apply.

I was in el Salvador a few weeks ago. Pretty much the same as it has been for the last few years. Honduras is the same. Poor people there heard that the US goverment was not sendign kids (or young men that can pass as teens) and preganat women back (it takes like 10 years for them to make a decision) so they are all claiming fake asylum, when it is all poverty related. In El Salvador people say the Gringos are estupidos and naive and the buy the whole bs, "think about the children"

Also for anybody that buy the whole argument that they will be killed if they go back, I suggest you folks travel a little, go to Latin America, qask people there, the hones ones will laugh at you, you can make the same argument pretty much with any country there, it is all POVERTY, it is not violence or anything else, it is POVERTY and poor people having too many kids to support them. And if the same in Africa, most of Asia. Where do we draw the line? is poverty a reason for Asylum? this is a travesty of the law. Can we take all the poor people from all those countries if they are children? who is going to pay for this? The rich and politicians in Central Americans are more then happy with this. They get money from the US goverment, illegals will send money back, and they don't have to worry about all these extra poor people, win win situation. Now if the Central American countries take all the poor people from cities like Chicago, New York, etc and pay for their education, health care and housing, that will be a different story.
