Megan Mclaughlin: Later school times is a Gamble
Posted by: Fairfax County Board Watch ()

“I would put Vegas money down that if we make this change we will see an improvement in the lives of children in Fairfax County,” McLaughlin said.

Yes, she really said that.

http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/article/20140716/NEWS/140719523/1117/superintendent-garza-endorses-plan-for-later-high-school-start-times&template=fairfaxTimes

Sadly, it's our money she is wagering, not funny money.

$5.5 million up front, mostly for 46 new buses.

$1.15 million annual recurring costs for drivers (46 x $25,000).

$414,000 annual recurring costs for bus maintenance (46 x $9,000).

That's a pretty hefty bet.

I'd bet Vegas money that you have no plan on where to park these buses.

How about a cost-benefit analysis, School Board people?

More anti-SLEEP trolling I see. Yawn. Restore the RE taxes to pre-bubble rates (prior to tax rate reductions) and really fund our schools the way we used to. Or spend less as enrollment increases and have the schools go to pot...

Sure, just spend more money for no benefit. Great selling point.

$5 million to delay school start by 40 minutes? Does even SLEEP believe that's worth the cost?

How much is it worth?
If it really does help the students....

Also with more buses wouldn't each bus last longer, less miles per day?

Things have changed, and not everyone is paying the same nominal real estate tax rate. Most residential properties will be paying several cents above the nominal $1.09 rate, and there are properties in the county that are paying a higher rate today than they did in pre-bubble 2000. In addition most properties is paying more in real estate taxes on an inflation adjusted basis today than they did in those pre-bubble days.

The culprit is not homeowners who got used to bubble era rates. The culprit is the County which got used to bubble era revenues.

No. Phyllis Payne says option 3 is not a satisfactory solution, and regrets that it is being referred to as the best we can do.

And, how are we going to pay for all the illegal alien kids that are being dumped on us?

They aren't illegal
In fact it is the law, signed before this president, that the kids get a hearing.
Maybe congress can allocate some funds to speed up the process..
I guess just to bitch than do your job

Yes. That is the law. It is the President's policy that has caused this mess. Did you watch CBS news tonight? McAllen, TX has $700k invested in these new immigrants that think the President invited them here.

You do know that the whole family gets covered by that law if they have a child with them--not just unaccompanied kids? Most of the unaccompanied kids are teen boys--at least they say they are teens.

Save money stop bussing for GT and TJ. Offer limited GT service in every elementary and middle school. When close to 20% of children are qualifying for GT service it is not longer GT!! Make TJ a nonexclusive high school. We do not have the money to fund a private high school any longer. Redo all school boundaries to match neighborhoods. Give each FCPS high school one of TJ's high tech labs. Education should be equal for all Fairfax kids.

I'm ok with this.
Great idea with no insults thrown in

So few of the TJ kids go into STEM anyway. To them it's just the path to UVA (where most study the humanities)

Why? Not all of the kids are equal educationally. This is the dumbed-down education theory catering to the dumbest kids. The brightest kids will just be bored and not inclined to excel.

GT is just where kids should be anyhow and everyone else is a reflection of what's happened to FCPS over the past 20 years.

Taxes, taxes, taxes . . . and diminished educational resources for your children. The Obama administration is paying for all their lawyers, as well as the costs of processing, feeding, housing, and educating them.
