When you make a left turn on green and there are no cars in front of you waiting to make a left turn, do you pull out into the intersection or wait behind the stop line for a gap in traffic?

I pull out into the intersection.

Legally I believe you are not allowed to lead into an intersection. You can only enter the intersection when you are ready to make the whole move. Sam Hill told me this and he knows what's what seeing as he tought traffic school at the court for ten zillion years.

But in practice? Everyone leads into traffic.

gah... i hate when people do that. it's so often that they end up waiting until the light actually turns red before they even go anywhere which really means they are running a red light. you should see what happens when someone does that and someone on the road they are turning through is trying to make the "yellow" light which really just turned red... smashola. what's worse is when the lane they are turning into is backed up to the intersection and they turn and end up blocking the entire intersection until the lane they are "in" starts moving which can be a minute or so. a good example of this is at Fair City Mall between the CVS and Eckerd(used to be BlockBuster) across the street with a crappy intersection between the two.

Gravis, once again, has no idea what the law actually says. And if he knew what it said, he'd know it's legal to lead into an intersection and clear on the yellow / red.

Of course, it's not legal to be a douchebag, which is a good part of what he describes. But the theory is legal!

erm... so i wasnt actually refering to the thread starter, just people in general. well... it is legal to be a douchebag, just not in this way. if it was illegal to be a douchebag (at any time), i would not be so angry at the world and it's douchebag populous. :)

One thing to consider is that all the lights are red for two seconds. That should be enough time to get out of everyone's way before the light turns green. Of course don't do this if traffic is jammed up on the road you're turning onto.

On a scale of 1 - 5, how much contempt does everyone have for Gravis?

(1 being slightly contemptuous, 5 being extreme abhorrance.)

but since you seem to have gone out of your way to find this law, Ben, care to share it with the rest of us by code number? Or were you just giving gravis shit "just cause"?

I looked and I couldn't find anything that makes this illegal. I did find the law that makes it OK to continue going on yellow if you've entered the intersection while it was still green.

You are legally obligated to proceed through an intersection if the light goes from yellow to red and you are in the intersection. I found this out the hard way when I tried to complete a left turn through a red light after I had waited in the middle of the intersection on green and then yellow. As I went to complete the turn, a guy blew the red light and hit me. The cop tried to fault both me and the other driver, but my lawyer was able to successfully argue that I had no option but to proceed through. The other guy dropped his case and my driving record wasn't seriously impacted, so to speak.

Read Dr. Gridlock. He cited the actual laws sometime last year. A cursory google search doesn't turn up the exact legal code, and I can't be bothered to waste time searching for it when I have better things to do.

I think you're allowed to wait until the red-light runner blows through the intersection.

Everybody in oncoming traffic stopped except him. He was an illegal immigrant (from South Korea) with no driver's license and no English. I certainly would have stopped if I knew the idiot was going to proceed.

I think you missed what I was trying to say...

I said they should be referred to as "illegal aliens". Not "illegal immigrants".

This is how the law refers to them and should be how we refer to them.

"illegal alien" is how the law refers them, to clarify.

You won't ever hear me calling them "migrant workers" or "undocumented workers" or whatever the P.C. term of the moment is.

Man, if I want to make a left turn and the dude in front of me has the same intention but doesn't pull out into the intersection to do it, I'm gonna be all on his ass honking and yelling and flipping him off. The whole reason for getting out in the interesection is it ensures that you'll make the light... Who gives a shit if it's red by that time - I'll talk my way out of that ticket. If the guy in front don't push it I'll race up all on his side in my Maxima and empty my jiz-filled Starbucks on his windshield - and my two Koreans will be offering him their bare bony ass salute...

There are also a number of traffic signals around here without a left-turn arrow..so pulling out into the intersection might be the ONLY way to make a left turn.

Come to think of it..isn't that how left turns were usually made before the left-turn arrow became commonplace?

there were also 1/3 the number of people in the area then, so they probably didn't need arrow lights to compensate for all the traffic backing up at popular left turns.

Many of the illegals simply cant drive.
