Depends on how you want to count it. Honduras has the highest rate but it has far fewer in number than many others. 7,172 vs 26,037 for Mexico, 50,108 for Brazil, 16,072 for Venezuela. The relatively small population for it as well as the other Central American countries of primary interest is what causes the rate to be very high. If you think that Mexico and the others don't have a gang and other similar organized crime problems, then you're nuts. They just have a large enough population otherwise to offset all of the murders as far as the rate goes.

Not to diminish that Honduras has some of the worst, but there are many others in the same general range. Once you get above a certain level a few 1,000s here or there really doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of difference in making it any more or less of a clusterfuck. e.g., 1/3 of the greater number of murders in Venezuela happen in one place (Caracas) vs 1/5 of a smaller of murders in Honduras happening in San Pedro Sula. Which is more dangerous? Who cares, they're both nightmares.

THe statistics are based on a city per 100,000 persons. Looking at that, more murders are done by 1 city in Honduras categorized as the most dangerous in the world. It's not the same idiot. Fathead, the rate of growth in FCPS membership has averaged 1.1% in this century. It was a little lower prior to the Great Recession and has been a little higher since. This sort of stability is why PROJECTED membership for FCPS has been in the 100-101% range of the subsequent ACTUAL membership in nearly all recent years. The exceptions in particular were 2007-08 and 2008-09. The general explanation of those two small underestimates has been that the severity of the Great Recession was not anticipated in projections and that marginal private and sectarian school families were unexpectedly forced by income effects to pull the plug and return to FCPS in those years.

I have a teacher friend at a prominently Hispanic Elementary School in Herndon and she is really frustrated with the number of kids in her class who are struggling academically. These kids barely speak English, have difficult family lives and are getting lost in the system. The problem continues to get worse and as much as she tries, these kids might be in a better position here in the states, but in the long run they will continue to have trouble assimilate to the new culture.

You certainly can validly compare dissimilar populations, and many other dissimilar things, without "adjustment." If that were not the case, then that would exclude most demographic comparisons. And you definitely can compare graduation rates between different racial groups. There may need to be some adjustment to specific data sets to make them comparable and there may be underlying reasons for and differences between the groups which require some further understanding and explanation in order to interpret and explain the results, but the comparison of such data in and of itself is valid. Simply because they are dissimilar does not necessarily imply required "adjustment."

The graduation rates for respective demographic groups are what they are. Even where proper data adjustments are made, the results are the same. There are no valid data or methods "adjustment" which you can make which will change that immigrant, and specifically recent Hispanic immigrant, graduation rates significantly lag those of other groups.

The achievement gap follows. Either spend the most you can on a house or give it up and use the money for private school for your kids (or don't have kids and pay for the illegals' kids).

More and more people requiring services = higher taxes and lower quality education in other parts of the county. The increasing class sizes are just the beginning.

I'm not talking for everyone either. Class sizes in the Northern aka richer part of the county have increased to over 30 persons per class at the Elementary level.


If you are spending more for some people you have to reduce quality/spending for others or increase taxes. Are people really going to like having their taxes go up for reduced quality in education just so the illegals can keep cashing in.

FCPS has deteriorated dramatically over the last two decades. That deterioration is accelerating. What is the school board doing? Undertaking a $5.6 million project to change the school day when it is clear that there are many other costs (traffic etc.) associated with the change. This is the type of thing that is very frustrating to county taxpayers and home owners.

The dropout for blacks is less than half the hispanics at 1.51%

Dropouts cost more and return less.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 59% of Likely U.S. Voters believe the primary focus of any new immigration legislation passed by Congress should be to send the young illegal immigrants back home as quickly as possible. Just 27% say it should focus instead on making it easier for these illegal immigrants to remain in the United States. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided. Well, in this case it led to an increase of 22,544 students over the course of 12 years, an average of 1,879 new students per year. The point, however, was that some of the rates being bandied about by partisans earlier were gross distortions of reality.
