County Hates Google

The county government sent the following message to all employees today telling them how awful Google is (and praising Microsoft as an "industry leader" that agrees Google is bad):

FAIRFAX COUNTY GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SECURITY NOTICE: Google Search Gadgets - Do Not Use!

Google, maker of the popular search engine (www.google.com), has developed several new add-on tools and software such as Google Desktop and Google Toolbar to enhance searching functionality. These add-on search tools are detrimental to the security and performance of the Fairfax County Government technology infrastructure.

When these tools are used to search for items on a county computer, network folder, e-mail, or on Web pages, Google’s Internet servers capture and store the data so it becomes a part of their world-wide data repository available to all users. Industry leaders such as Microsoft and Gartner as well as a number of national security firms are warning users of the significant security and performance risks these tools create. The files that could be copied to Google's servers by these tools may include sensitive personal data or data protected by HIPAA and other laws. Further, the use of these tools could shut down enterprise information technology resources such as e-mail, Intranet/Internet or shared network drives.

Over the past several months, DIT has detected a proliferation of these tools on county systems which is, in fact, severely degrading systems such as e-mail and is causing disruption to normal Fairfax County business operations.

Due to the severity of these risks, the Information Security Office has prohibited the download or installation of the Google Toolbar and Google Desktop Search applications on any computer connected to the Fairfax County Government network. This prohibition is authorized by the County Executive. If you already have these tools installed on a county workstation, it must be removed immediately.

Lack of compliance could result in disruption of your access to county network resources. If you have any questions regarding the removal of these tools or clarification on what is permitted/prohibited, please contact your Agency Information Security Coordinator or your Agency IT Analyst.

Firefox is banned for the same security reasons. It'll bring down the entire county network.

This issue has to do with the option for searching across computers. Isn't this off by default? Why not ban the setting and not the tool? Google Desktop rocks.

I'd bet my last dime that the county requires employees to use the 180Search toolbar.

For those who don't know what it is
