More Cox internet problems (what else is new?)
Posted by: eyos ()
Date: September 09, 2006 12:38AM

My Vonage has been acting up the past day and I've noticed that page load speed has been inconsistent. I'm guessing that Cox's network is acting up AGAIN. Anyone else having similar problems with their Cox internet connection?

(Comcast, please enter the Fairfax County market!)

Here's a traceroute to GMU that should take only a few hops.

everyone becomes an expert on the internet and routing when they discover traceroute and netstat, and they all presume to blame issues on their provider because of information they receive from these tools. Makes the job of the IT staff harder, for sure, when dealing with clowns who are barely qualified to use Windows.

eyos, what kinda modem do you have?

Do you have Cox Tv? How is that working?

Look around and see where the Cable Travels,

1. check and see if its damaged
2. How many splits does it go threw before it gets to your Modem?
3. If it goes threw a few splitters add up the DB's.
4. Your signal might be @ border line with working and not working..
(not cox's fault)

Instead of concluding cox sucks, get a tech to come out and fix it.

I understand this makes you angry, i can assure you its not cox.

Try the link below and see if your power level is above -5 db. If not you've got a cabling problem. Cable Internet really needs a dedicated cable from the main line.

I have never had any problem with cox except for when the retarded mexican laborors cut the line while installing fiber for Verizon. I told them where to shove their fiber.Cox blamed Verizon in the first place anyway.

If your little bits and bytes running around your computer decided to leave the house and go out to eat, they wouldn't go to 192.168.n.n.

no of course not... im sure they would all be at 127.0.0.1

But Gravis... they can't leave the house if they are going to the loop back address. Are you saying that bits and bytes don't deserve a good night on the town?

Re: More Cox internet problems (what else is new?)

Well, knowing that 127.0.0.1 is the address to make your computer connect to itself, I would say that you comp's bytes enjoyed the town in 0.00001 milliseconds and came back. That said, whats the difference between 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 if you ping them?

192.168.1.1 (and 192.168.0.1) is a common IP address for routers. So the packets would at least leave the computer, but they still wouldn't make it out of the house.

Yeah. Actually 192.168.whatever.whatever is one of a couple internal IP address ranges that are not routed anywhere outside.

That's why it was funny for someone to post it as a "check out this website" post.

A lot cable modems have internal webpages at 192.168.100.1 (the only one I ever saw that didn't was an RCA)

However, they may not have anything at 192.168.100.1/signal.html -- that would depend on the particular cablemodem. SA Webstar modems don't. Motorola Surboards probably do (it's been a while since I had one).

my crappy dlink cable modem has a config thing at that address, and damned if I even know the admin password. what the hell is there to config on a cable modem if it doesn't have a switching router? I know all CM's are routers but not switches too like your wifi router is.

modem may not be as crappy as I thought, it even lets me tune the frequency I am communicating at. I wonder if there is a better frequency to use?

...are all controlled by config files sent from the cable company. I'd be very surprised if it actually let you change the frequency you're using.

The webpage mainly serves to let you see the status of the cable modem. About all the Surfboard lets you do from the webpage (besides read information) is reboot it.

The SA Webstar won't even let you do that.

it def. lets me change it, I just did and lost connection, and promptly changed it back to the first one. It's the only setting on the entire modem I have ability to have control over besides the login info.

I know you are right, that a config file set the frequency that was in there, but it apparently lets me change it if needed. There is just nothing to change it to AFAIK. I'd need to know a lot more about cox' network than I do.

Back in the old days you could force configs onto them and steal bandwidth, but things have changed a lot since the halcyon late 90's. Sigh. Nothing to steal anyway... the modem is showing 2.5 Mb upstream and 5.something down, which is more bandwidth than I'll ever need for downloading torrents and nntp crap.

the exact setting I can change is:

Favorite Downstream Frequency:

and the current setting is: 117000000 Hz (117Mhz)

It lets me enter any value I want and click "apply". I just have no idea if any other values would work or be any better.

You can do a variety of cable modem changes but most are considered illegal or may get you banned from the service provider. The most popular freak years ago was "uncapping."

Your cable modem has a setting for the speed of the uploads and downloads set by the cable company. Years ago when cable internet was starting people used to turn the speed setting up all the way so they had full speed. Of course cable companies got wise to this and shut down their MAC addresses.

IN general these days, it is best to go with the standard setting because the cable company has config'd all routers on the system to be effective at those.

Was possible due to a problem in the firmware of certain cablemodems that allowed it to retrieve it's config from a TFTP server on the ethernet interface under certain conditions. Normally it's supposed to get it from the coax interface.

So you could feed it a config file with unlimited download/upload speeds.

In theory this is still possible using a cable modem with modified firmware.

yes yes, you can go all J-TAG and replace the firmware with ease (well... if you arent an idiot) but instead of "uncapping" the connection, it's far smarter to just set the cap at a higher bandwidth. i personally can get speeds higher than the 5Mb limit from some sites (kernel.org) without any funny business, so i know there isnt an instant flag that is raised. so if you extend the cap to say... 7Mb, you may get away with it. oh... and updated versions of docsis work on newer surfboard modems. mine is compatible but i rather just wait and get fios.

yup only 117Mhz for DL

and 22Mhz to upload

Everything else is either analog or qam packets so you wont get anything threw modem.

having a dedicated line just for internet helps. without any splitters FYI

I don't have cable tv (our company is a directv service entity so we get free sat at home), so that helps.

BTW no way I would pay for directv if suddenly my free account went away. Way too many hassles.

I suspect you are right, gravis, that you can do that, but I have to wonder if they "sweep" for it occasionally, so it may be best to keep it to temporary usage.

kernel.org is my "true speed test" btw, I love that site.

This right here is why I love this site, express interest in hacking some local system and everyone wants to throw in what they know lol.

NOw I can get on to my Wireless router with 192.168.1.1, but the link above to signal puts me to my cable modem (a surfboard incedentally) and I mess with seetings occasionally there.

And the router RESton, the reason I thin kfor you losing connection is that whenever you change a setting, it has to notify all the wireless adapters, etc and so you have no connecgtion for maybe 10 mins while it adjusts.

Cox advertises 5 mbps I think, except preferered (200 /month) gets 20 supposedly I get a max of 3 megs.
