Fairfax School Board = let's just hug it out (huh?)

Tamara Dernak Kaufax is the new Chairman of the Fairfax School Board [umh, or is the PC police word "Chairwoman", "Chairperson" or just "Chair"?] after a whole bunch of other people refused to even vote for her. Watched as she said she "hugged Sandy Evans and there's more hugs to come".

WTF is up with that? Seriously? Rodney King moment if there ever was one.

Then Ted blahblahblah Velfkoff was elected Vice Chairman, but Kathy Smith and Sandy Evans were running-so huh?

Clear as mud and something about back door, 11th hour deals behind the scenes. Great, just great. Dysfunction much?

Gee, I feel so much better about FCPS (as running calculator to see how to put my kids in private school).

It was a shame to see because students in FCPS need better members to represent the strong needs of the school system.
It was sad to see TJ dropped from No.1 school in the USA to now only 4th highest. The people on the Board have to be focusing on the high needs of our students in FCPS, not just how to figure the leadership of each other.
They need same work effort as students are supposed to.

or we do. 1 is almost finished so wouldn't move but others who are far from it. The leadership sets the pace and tone and given what what was on tonite, it's just a hot mess and headed in the wrong direction.

They don't need hugs. They need brains and spines. The few voices of reason on the board don't have the votes within the group to take charge and ensure FCPS does not continue its inexorable decline. Don't expect great things to happen this coming year. Tunnel vision will reign, buckets of money, will be mysteriously found to fund pet projects, promises will be made and broken, and innumerable posed pictures of the board standing behind award recipients will be taken for posterity.

Hugs? Come on. Who are the voices of reason? ID them, please.

Everyone at Gatehouse said things are great. Everyone has a nice tan, are very relaxed and got their picture taken with Mickey

This is just how big government works, everywhere and forever. Read the headlines: VA scandal, IRS scandal, Selective Service sends notices to people born in 1800s, TSA, ACA, Justice Department, and FCPS. It seems we should learn from our mistakes.

Maybe this is the beginning of the "mindfulness initiative" that we saw when FCPS provided Tara Brach with a forum to discuss her ideas.

Brach lives in a nice home in Great Falls and drives a BMW.

She also graduated from the Fielding Institute, not exactly the greatest school.

But anyway FCPS thought she deserved support and endorsement. Now FCPS seeks enlightenment while hugging their problems away.

You're discounting the tremendously powerful work that Ryan's doing with his Twitter account. Social media and a clean shaven head can get this school system back on track.

So the conservative wing on the school board (McLaughlin, Schultz, Reed) and the two mavericks (Evans and Storck) didn't get their way last night. Won't be the first time, won't be the last time. Life will go on.

Usually whenever Elizabeth Schultz and Megan McLaughlin don't get their way, I find it cause to celebrate. They are both bags of hot air who seem stuck in junior high school. Springfield and Braddock folks must be thrilled to have elected representatives who have never advocated successfully for anything on the Board.

Ryan volunteered to be a prom date. He is doing a great job with this.

Schultz is the only one on the board with a lick of sense.

She's a Tea Party nut. It's not enough that she takes up a lot of space, but she wastes everyone else's time with her rants as well.

She's far worse than Liz Bradsher. Bradsher alienated a lot of people with her foul mouth and crass tactics, but she got South County HS and MS built and she got West Springfield moved up the renovation queue. Schultz has not accomplished anything at all. Clifton ES is just as closed today as it was when she got elected.

What happened to Moon?

Is the SLEEP initiative now officially dead?

West Springfield will be renovated the same year regardless of bradshers divisive tactics. She did nothing to help them.

Fairfax Board doing its business well?

My wife and I decided to follow our daughter's social media more closely after getting an iphone and not enough supervision.

In coming across tweets posted by Ryan or by students about him which were retweeted, it is disgusting this man, and that term is used loosely, serves as a publicly elected official.

OUr daughter had to unfollow. McELveen in no way represents parents of Fairfax County students in FCPS.

"McELveen in no way represents parents of Fairfax County students in FCPS."

Whatever do you mean? Is it worth following, like a twitter feed of Backpage?

Or does he represent the kids' interests instead of the Type-A helicopter parents?

Only if the kids' interests have to do with bathrooms.

He's been obsessed with them since he was at Marshall. He wanted to make them our Senior Class gift. Weird. Then & now.
