Roaches have infested my apartment & I can't get out of my lease.

My family and I have only been living in this apartment complex for three months or so. We seen a roach in the kitchen shortly after moving in I callled the office manager who had the unit exterminated. Now they are back again I this time I seen one in my cabinet. So now I must wait a week for extermination once again. They office manager informed me that there are four units near mine that are infested and this is why I'm seeing thr critters. She asked me to bear with her as, she is working on getting rid of the pest in the other units.

At this point we just want to get out of our lease before this situation gets any worse. What are my legal rights under Virginia state law on terminating this lease? I informed her we wanted to move, and she yet again to give her another chance to fix the problem.

Back in the good old days I lived in a apt complex named "Roach City" in Fairfax by the exterminators. I had lots of roaches but during one interesting phase I had loads of em. Come home turn on the kitchen light and start danceing stepping on roaches as they headed for the corners and cracks. Snappity snap..Wishing I had some pointy toe cowboy boots.

They would be in the sink about 25 of em and Id hose em down the drain for a ride.

I did get a gross out when I looked into a box of pancake mix and a hundred were in there doing the twist.

I bought "Roach Motels" and set them up. It was great sport to see them inside by the dozen the next day with some of them letting out roach babys caught on the sticky stuff.

Where there's roaches, there's roach poop all over the kitchen.

It sounds as though you and the Landlords are both doing what you are expected to do. You are reporting the problem and the Landlord is actively trying to remedy the situation. There may never be a clear cut point where you can simply break the lease, unless the Landlord agrees to let you do so. My suggestion is to carefully track each communication with the Landlord and the ongoing problem. Use emails for all communications if you can do so. The Landlord is probably correct that is takes a little bit of time to wipe out all of the bugs. So long as the Landlord is having an exterminator come into each of the problem units, that would seem to be the appropriate response. You could try to get the Landlord to agree now that if the situation has not been resolved by the end of June or the end of July, then the Landlord will allow you to terminate the lease. If you can get an agreement like this, get it in writing.

Roaches like high places, but boric acid on the tops of your cabinets or fridge, they will take it back to the nest and kill off a lot of them. Careful though, it's toxic.

Diatomaceous earth is natural and will kill them but it takes 2 days to work they may seem more active during this time as they try to find seek out water. It cuts them causes them to dehydrate and die.

You don't say what the exterminator is using, but gel baits are much more effective than sprays. The roaches are attracted to the gel, eat it and return to their nest, where they die and poison the other roaches, too. You can buy Combat gel at Target etc., and use it yourself. You'll have a hard time breaking your lease if the management is making an honest effort to solve the problem, and there's no guarantee that your next apartment won't have bugs too.

This would seem to work better since there are other apartments infested. Assuming they all are coming from the same nest, repeated use should finish off the nest or at least make them controllable.
