Waples Mill Rd?

Does anyone know how it got its name? Obviously there was a mill, but what kind? Was it a steam mill or one with the water that turns the wheel inside? And who was Waples? Was he a doctor or maybe a Mayor?

Ask Wikipedia. Waple was a maker of sausages. When Waple was 47 he took advantage of the beautiful young Mill, by intoxicating her with strong spirits and having his way with her. Young Mill became pregnant and old Waple had no choice but to marry her or face losing his business and being out cast by the community.

Yes. Waple was the first sausage maker in the country to add maple syrup to his sausages and sell them on a large scale commercially. They were popular in the bigger east coast cities stretching from New York City to Charleston, SC. Initally, the sausages did not sell well until his young wife Mill suggested a name change and viola the Waple sausage was born!

When something magically appears, I’m going to say, “Viola”

Yes the was a Mill the processed Waples into various flour products to support the racist Confederate Army.

Slaves were used in the process, and the name "Waples Mill" needs to be removed and changed.

George Henry Waple built it in 1867. For twenty-three years beginning in 1890 the grist and sawmill was owned and operated by Edward Millard. It returned to the Waple family in 1913 and served the surrounding farm community until the 1920's. It functioned as a small "custom mill" grinding grain, mostly corn, for the local market. There were numerous such mills built in the 19th century Fairfax County—several were located along Difficult Run.

The mill was owned by a man named Will Maples who thought it would be funny to switch the first letter of his first and last name.

Waple was known as a cocksman, banging his way through Fairfax. Story is he used to hold his sausages next to his junk so the ladies could see his massive girth.

Waple was a young indian brave and was a member of the Cherokee-Mills tribe that used to inhabit this area. His tepee was on the spot where the vdot traffic circle now sits.
