Don't Pay That Fine! E-ZPass Says Email a Scam
Motorists receiving email noting unpaid tolls, but it's a hoax.

E-ZPass Virginia is alerting customers to an email scam preying on a commuter's worst nightmare: unpaid tolls.

A sample email includes the subject line, "In arrears for driving on toll road." And the message, with an E-ZPass logo, claims that several invoices have been ignored, along with a "link" to the invoice.

"Please be advised that this is not a communication from E-ZPass," reads the warning to customers. "We advise you not to open or respond to the message."

Questions about any message purportedly sent by E-ZPass can be answered by its Customer Service Center at 877-762-7824.

Valid emails would include one of two return emails: addressesNoReply@ezpassva.com and customerservice@ezpassva.com.

The first thing to do with any potential phishing scam is look at the actual sender address. I got this message too, and the sender is from an ".ru" domain. That's Russia. We can be pretty sure that Virginia EZpass isn't based in Moscow.

The email should have added:

If you fell for this, please cut your driver's license in half and mail to DMV, Richmond, VA. You're too stupid to drive and we don't want you on our roads.

Why? It lets you roll right past the lines of drivers trying to pay their tolls with nickels. What's the problem?
