WEEL 1310 AM

Does anyone remember how good WEEL was back in the 1970's? The Dj's had great energy and were really funny. Pop Rock music back in those days was really something! I would love to have access to an archive of clips back in those days to reminisce...

Murphy in the morning and Prell in the PM.
Before he was Jack Diamond he was Bruce Diamond.

Jack Diamond used to play WEEL clips when he had a show on 107.3.

I remember they used to have a SGT Carroll Baracker (sp) from the FCPD come on WEEL and give stolen car reports. I found those amusing.

I remember when Officer Cox did that. Carroll Buracker became the Police Chief of Fairfax Co. later on. Early-Mid 1980's

I know this is on an old post, but I have to mention that, while I used to listen to WEEL as a kid, the one thing that always stuck with me was one of their aired musical slogans, "1310 WEEL, spotlights the sounds of tomorrow." Forty plus years since I've heard them, and that slogan still stands out for me.

Ah, yes. And who else of these oldsters remembers when G. Gordon Liddy had a show nearby? Anyone? I have his autograph. How did I get it you may ask? I sent him a "letter" and he sent me a "reply by mail". Remember requesting a song? If only...

Yikes!

I stopped listening to Top 40 radio when I was in 8th grade and joined the Rock Revolution: KSJO, San Jose, 92.3 FM. Eventually, we got two, out there, when KSAN changed its programming. There was an AM in Stockton that had it, too, but it was hard to get it in San Jose or San Francisco.

I was impressed with the progressive radio here, when my parents took me out of boarding school in California. Not only was there WHFS and WGTB, but also there was WHMC and WAYE on AM. WAYE was daylight, only, but at night it signed off to clear the channel for a Montréal station that had Expos games in French. WHMC lost its license and they sold WAYE. At one point, WLMD was a progressive country station.

For a while, WMAL-FM was somewhat progressive. In fact, WWDC-FM, also known as DC-101, took its "album rock" format by extrapolating on WMAL-FM's format.

In addition, you had Ol' Howard of WAMU weekday nights with Rock'n'Roll Jukebox, Skip Nelson at night on WINX with Heavy Metal Thunder. For a while, even WEAM went progressive, but that did not last long.

Murphy-in-the-morning had its best days on WMOD. Too bad Sonderling sold out. WMOD was a great oldies station.

I remember their TV ads which showed a ratty looking combat boot and the slogan was "all the music that fits".

One of the things that I remember about WEEL and WEAM, is that if you were listening to a song on WEEL, then as the song finished and switched over to WEAM, you could hear the same song again about half way thru.
It was like WEAM played the same song about 2 minutes after WEEL.

I used to listen to my Radio Shack Flavoradio (mine was blueberry) all summer long playing down by the creek or at lake Accotink. We listened to WEEL and anyone who listened to WEAM had koodies!

I had a Coca Cola can radio that picked up WEEL just fine - Circa 1972

Thanks for jogging the memory for G. Gordon Liddy's show from WJFK Fairfax studio. It was an entertaining offering. He used to brag about his Cadillac STS with a NorthStar engine. Yapped about his Navy Seal son and voluptuous producer for whom he eventually hooked up with after dumping his long-time wife. Don and Mike Show staff also at WJFK back in the day made fun of him under the radar to avoid station management reprisal.

I used to listen to WEEL back in the '70s.

My favourite was the Arhtur Treacher's hour. They would play all British music the entire hour and then after that they would play that one great Arthur Treacher's commercial. The one where the bottle of Fanta is singing about how amazing the hot fish and chips are? Ah, yes. That takes me back.

There's something fishy about that response, but I just can't figure it out.

The TOOT-A-LOOP!!!!!1 I have not seen one of those in years!!! I had a red one. Many people used to call them "Tooty-toops", but Panasonic called them the "Toot-A-Loop".

What disco did WEEL broadcast from on Saturday nights? I was told there was a disco in Tysons Corner where Mr. Smith's used to be -- could that be the one? I remember listening the night WEEL premiered "Night Fever" by the Bee Gees!

If it was the 70’s, you should have been listening to WHFS, 102.3 FM.

As a young'un in those days, I only had an AM radio, so I did not discover FM stations until later!

Where was the Crystal Pistol located? What was the vibe like inside? Was it sleek and sophisticated? Sleazy? Both? Any celebrity sightings?

The Crystal Pistol was on route 7 in the Tyson's area. I think it was more of a country-western place but Thursday nights were Disco nights.

The name Crystal Pistol makes more sense if it was a Country and Western place. My (admittedly foggy) memory had me listening to the live WEEL broadcast on a Friday or a Saturday night, but it could very well have been Thursday nights. The Route 7 location jives with what I had heard before, that it was where Mr. Smith's had been, which I think now is a gym(?). In my mind it was a very glamorous place (like in the movies - "Last Days of Disco" et al.), but my guess is that the inherent Country and Western vibe of the place probably prevented it from being too glam. Probably the glam discos of the day were in Georgetown, right? At least Fairfax folks got to boogie on down in their hometown if they needed a mid-week disco fix! Long live WEEL!
