When most people around Alexandria think of Landmark Mall, they think of it as that mall that's going to be renovated soon.
But the shopping center, which is still welcoming shoppers each day, was reportedly the meeting place in May for two area men met who met there with an undercover FBI agent to discuss the purchase of guns to sell on the black market in the Middle East, according to a criminal complaint filed by the FBI with the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and reported by Leesburg Today.
The mall is no stranger to the FBI; it was recently used for a mock terrorist exercise.
The two men who were unknowingly talking with the FBI about arms purchases, Samer Khaled Alhnaity of Bristow, 36, a naturalized U.S. citizen and Nader Arafat Fayez Alhnaity, 31, a citizen of Jordan and hairstylist in Lorton, according to the criminal complaint.
They allegedly met with an undercover FBI agent at Landmark Mall on May 26 to discuss purchasing multiple assault rifles and Glock handguns they said they planned to ship to Jordan to sell, they said, on the black market, according to the criminal complaint.
The Leesburg Today news article said the two men were charged in late June with conspiring to sell firearms without a license.
