2-year-old burned at Va. Lowe's store
http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/local/virginia/2014/07/07/va-toddler-hurt-after-chemical-accident-at-store/12324311/

STERLING, Va. (WUSA9) -- A two-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Monday night after she suffered from chemical burns at a Lowe's Home Improvement store.

Authorities said the accident happened around 8:50 p.m. Monday at the Lowe's Home Improvement store located at 45430 Dulles Crossing Plaza in Sterling, Va.

The two-year-old suffered from chemical burns to her face and body after coming in contact with a de-greasing compound.

She was taken to the burn center. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Another case of a grossly negligent parent who will no doubt blame Lowes and look for a big cash settlement.

GRADE: A-

yes a hardware store is a great place to bring a 2 yr old !

a 2 yr old shouldn't even be in a car unless going to / from a doctor: everyone knows child seats do not protect the young very well and they are at highly elevated danger in cars

should not be dragging babies around in traffic to begin with unless there is some pressing need , let alone unattended in hw store

I doubt that anyone was allowing their 2 year old to run around Lowes unsupervised - the big carts filled with building supplies are a danger in and of themselves. I would be afraid that a toddler would get run over.

Most likely the child was in a cart and pulled something off of a shelf while the parent was otherwise occupied. Accidents happen. I hope the little girl will be o.k. - my heart goes out to her and her family.

That's very sad, but I agree, a hardware store is not the place to bring a two-year old.

I used to take my kids to the hardware store when they were little. They loved the riding lawnmowers, the Christmas decorations, the forklifts...

It was all very cool to them. We went many times w/o incident. They definitely stayed in the cart the entire time and I kept a very close watch on them.

There are very few details as to what happened with the 2 year old who got burned. So it's hard to know if something should have been done differently.

Home Depot isn't the only store that sells hardware/garden supplies, btw.

I was driving down Pickett on my way to the Home Depot store in Fairfax when I saw a man on a bike with what looked like a 5 year old kid riding *behind* him. It was a busy day, busy traffic and that guy had a little Kindergartner riding a bike down that street *behind* him. WTH? Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

You can't get a babysitter every time you need to go to the hardware store. It was really late to be taking out a 2-year-old, but something could have broken that couldn't wait until the morning (plumbing, etc.) or they had to fix it so they could leave the house the next day to get to work.

We took our kids to the hardware store all the time. It's part of life. But, they were contained in a cart or a stroller and watched closely.

I think people should have to take a test and put down a deposit to be parents.

Then how about leaving your wife or girlfriend at home with the kid?

My spouse was at sea for months at a time, and also traveled. I didn't have anybody. If there was an emergency, the kids came right along with me.

No kidding. And to clarify - the kid was riding his own little bike *behind* his dad. Dad had put a yellow reflective vest on him so I guess he figured he had done "all he could" if somebody hit the kid it wouldn't be HIS fault, right? What an IDIOT.

Bad accidents can happen anywhere. I would think that a little kid in a shopping cart at Home Depot is generally pretty safe. It doesn't mean that freak accidents don't happen though. Of course, maybe the 2 year old was running around HD unsupervised - which would not be safe.

I saw some fucking pakis at the Chantilly Lowes get into an accident in the loading area. Where you drive at less than 2 mph!!! They brought two cars, six people and STILL had the lowe's people load up 8 bags of mulch (4 in each car). Stupid ass sand niggers.

You are truly ignorant! It's because of dumbasses like you that kids are abused or neglected. Just because YOU wouldn't do it doesn't mean everyone watches their kid properly. Don't you read the news, parents leave kids locked in hot cars, burn their hands on the stove for being bad. NEWS FLASH - Not all parents are good at being parents or do the right thing.

I have never seen ANY parent letting a toddler run around Lowes/Home Depot or even Walmart unsupervised. Sure there are crap parents out there but most do their damage out of sight, not in the middle of a store.

I hope this is sarcasm. Either that or youve never been to a big box store. Parents let their kids run wild in those places like it's an amusement park.

I took my kids everywhere when they were toddlers. How else were they going learn to behave in public?

Hardware store, grocery store, restaurants, post office, metro, ABC store, landfill, airplanes, bank, mall....

You name it. Why would you have kids if you're not to spend time with them while you carry out your daily activities?

Let ask a different way: Who the fuck has kids and then doesn't take them anywhere?

Yes, a two year old should be supervised. But a cleaning chemical like that -- how did the baby get the container open?

I hate suits like this, but I suspect Lowes and the chemical company are looking to settle.

Well we have a Parent in GA who killed his kid. I would like to know more about what really Happened. I send my wife to Homeo Depot on the weekends, no one there is sane in the first place. But to keep kids locked in a bubble is just F'n stupid. Most caustic chemicals have a Aluminum Seal, so Either the parent should not be a parent or the story is false?

When I go into any store, I bring several of my kids and expect the store to provide free daycare. After all, I'm entitled. If something goes wrong, it's the store's fault. They shouldn't let kids in the store if they're not prepared to look after them. P.S. I always vote Democrat!

Then shop at Ikea. You can check your potty trained kid into a play area and go shopping all by yourself. You can even kick back at the little restaurant and have some meatballs if you want. In the meantime your kid can play and have fun in the play area.

Two issues here:

1. The parents are complete loser, white trash, assholes who didn't pay attention to their daughter. Your 2 year old does not easily come into contact w/ a degreasing compound in a store. How the fuck does that even happen?

2. Their 2 year old was at HD at almost 9pm. I have a 2 year old. Her bedtime is 7pm. She falls asleep quickly and doesn't wake up until nearly 7am.

If you're still shopping at 8:50pm w/ your toddler, that means your 2 year old probably isn't going to bed until about 10pm...far too late.

Like I said...fucking redneck, white trash losers. No offense to most of you on this board from Manassas.

I have seen kids aged 2 to 4 out at all sorts of late hours (mostly talking in that 9 to 11 PM range) fairly frequently. Around the neighborhood, at restaurants, in stores, outside the movie theater, etc. I don't really understand...

I am employed by Lowe's in a different state. While its true that there are not many details as to how this happened. It will eventually come out. You probably wont be surprised when I tell you some of the sights I've seen. For Instance: A 4 yr old rolled up in a large piece of carpet being rolled down the aisle by her "Uncle-Daddy", A toddler approximately 3 climbing up a ladder while Daddy gushed with pride at his strength, A very young boy hopping from one lawn tractor display to the other. He actually fell and that's when Mom paid attention to him. I've seen slightly older children doing gymnastics on the rail carts meant to hold lumber while the parents are pushing them. I see all manor of children whose parents allow them to hold bug spray, paint, cleaning chemicals. Most are very young and they put them right into their mouths. For the record I have told every single one of these parents that they should not allow the kids to do the things they are doing because they could get hurt. I have been told to mind my business and shut my mouth. I have 2 grown children and mine did not leave my sight or touch anything and I certainly didn't expect a store associate to watch my children for me while I shopped or gossiped with someone. So if you are any of these parents STOP HAVING CHILDREN, THEY DON'T HAVE A CHANCE!

Okay maybe I was a bit harsh and perhaps not very clear. When you see kids (minors) acting in a such a way and the parents do not do anything about it, you can call the police and report it. Here is the state code. Of course this didn't happen in VA, but your state would have a similiar code...

ยง 18.2-371.1. Abuse and neglect of children; penalty; abandoned infant.

A. Any parent, guardian, or other person responsible for the care of a child under the age of 18 who by willful act or omission or refusal to provide any necessary care for the child's health causes or permits serious injury to the life or health of such child shall be guilty of a Class 4 felony. For purposes of this subsection, "serious injury" shall include but not be limited to (i) disfigurement, (ii) a fracture, (iii) a severe burn or laceration, (iv) mutilation, (v) maiming, (vi) forced ingestion of dangerous substances, or (vii) life-threatening internal injuries.

B. 1. Any parent, guardian, or other person responsible for the care of a child under the age of 18 whose willful act or omission in the care of such child was so gross, wanton and culpable as to show a reckless disregard for human life shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony.

2. If a prosecution under this subsection is based solely on the accused parent having left the child at a hospital or rescue squad, it shall be an affirmative defense to prosecution of a parent under this subsection that such parent safely delivered the child to a hospital that provides 24-hour emergency services or to an attended rescue squad that employs emergency medical technicians, within the first 14 days of the child's life. In order for the affirmative defense to apply, the child shall be delivered in a manner reasonably calculated to ensure the child's safety.

C. Any parent, guardian or other person having care, custody, or control of a minor child who in good faith is under treatment solely by spiritual means through prayer in accordance with the tenets and practices of a recognized church or religious denomination shall not, for that reason alone, be considered in violation of this section.

(1981, c. 568; 1988, c. 228; 1990, c. 638; 1993, c. 628; 2003, cc. 816, 822; 2006, c. 935.)

I agree 100% that some of the acts would be considered child neglect and endangerment. My real concern is if these parents or guardians do this in a major box store with hundreds of people around, what are they doing or not doing when no one is watching?

Making fun of whites will get you in trouble on this forum. After all, Whites are perfect and minorities are evil. FBI stats and Census data prove this.

I remember last summer at OC, I saw a girl probably 13 0r 14 walking with her mother. She had on a bikini and the bottoms had this message on the front right above her snatch: ENTER HERE (with an arrow)

There was a toddler crushed to death under a cart full of lumber that overturned at Home Depot in Miami years ago. Not the kind of store you should bring your young kids to. Common Sense, no rules needed.
