Catholic High School Population to Triple
Posted by: In the name of the ()

Catholic High School populations in the Arlington Diocese are expected to triple in the next ten years. That's the real reason schools like Paul VI CHS are moving to larger campuses, and smaller schools are making plans to expand. The new John Paul the Great CHS is already at capacity. Land for new schools are being sought.

Where do you think all these kids are coming from? No mention of Catholic elementary schools expanding.

I went to Catholic school because the public schools in my district are being over run by Hispanics. I'm not racist either, I had Hispanic friends at O'Connell, but they were very Americanised unlike the ones you would find at a public school.

This is what happened in all the major cities where the public schools went downhill. The Catholic schools are the largest private system around so they are the "go to" schools. They size of their system also means that they have money to offer scholarships to promising students. You do not have to be Catholic to go to their schools.

Exactly. When the public schools start circling the drains, parents who actually care about getting a good education for their children head towards the Catholic schools. It wouldn't surprise me to see the few Catholic high schools have a very selective admissions process in the next 5 to 10 years.

The only other option in this area is to move to Falls Church City. However, the housing prices and taxes there are sky high. It is like paying to send your kids to private schools through property taxes.

"It wouldn't surprise me to see the few Catholic high schools have a very selective admissions process in the next 5 to 10 years."

And then you'll hear the complaints about them now reflecting the faces of the communities they serve and how they're perpetuating structural inequality and need to open up.

As noted, this is what happens when the public schools can no longer effectively educate children. FCPS is getting there.

That sounds like a charter school. The NEA will never get behind that! Liberals prefer children to fail in failing public schools than to send them to private schools with proven academic success - all in the name of supporting public school teaching unions.

I'm concerned about mostly Catholic immigrants flooding our public schools and lowering the quality of public eduction and I'm NOT sending my kids to a Catholic high school. Not everyone runs away.

No, not at all. This is not about religion. People are not leaving the public schools because of the religion of the immigrants. And Catholic schools have all religions represented. I know Muslims that go to the Catholic schools. This has zero to do with religion and everything to do with education.

Catholic schools have a great tradition of a solid, traditional education for their students. They don't suffer undisciplined students and the parents support this. This goes back hundreds of years to the beginnings of this country. That's what this is about.

And they don't have to deal with all the political BS out there. They don't deal with free lunches, parking fees, PLC meetings, etc. They are not distracted. The core mission is educating kids and that's what they do.

I have had kids in both Catholic and Public school. Hands down the Catholic Schools do a better overall job. It could be as simple as you get what you pay for. But, when you are in the school, it just feels like a better learning and social experience.

I wonder when exactly you gradutated from O'Connell. My son tried it for his freshman year, and we were very displeased with the experience. We were surpised at the degree of behavior problems at that school. Since our local public school is good, and free, we're heading back there for his remaining years. From everything we've read recently, it seems that O'Connell isn't what it used to be.

The number of FCPS schools where involved parents send their kids only if they have no alternative is growing rapidly. The number of FCPS schools that are comparable to quality private options is shrinking very rapidly. Truthfully, because of SOLs, no FCPS schools are really comparable to a quality private school that does not have to screw around teaching to the test.

FCPS 2014 is a shadow of FCPS 1984.

What parents don't realize is that their kids in Catholic schools are being taught by teachers that barely make a living on their salaries. The teachers are underpaid and have terrible health insurance and retirement plans. There is a lot of staff turnover. Many teachers at the high school level are older folks who have retired from private schools or are in a second career. The Catholic schools have a hard time attracting good teachers for math and science, especially. They also have teachers teaching outside their disciplines because they need someone to cover the class.

Most Catholic schools are now imitating what the public schools do, only they don't have Gatehouse to do a lot of the curriculum stuff, so the teachers have to do it on top of their regular jobs. They are developing common assessments for the diocese on their own time, as one example.

You would not believe how many problem kids are at some of the Catholic schools because they were kicked out of public schools.

Yeah, I knew one of those "kicked out" kids. He lasted about a month at Paul VI. They kicked him out pretty quick. They don't have to keep those types.

I agree that those teachers are underpaid, but their teaching environment is a lot different from the public school. I'm not sure about terrible health insurance (they could always choose Obamacare if it's that bad---I actually think the new federal rules have certain baselines for insurance so that they have to include adequate coverage). Older folks don't honestly sound like a bad deal---those are experienced teachers if they are working after retiring somewhere else.

Not having Gatehouse could be a good thing. I don't think Gatehouse gets people out of doing curriculum anyway. If you're teaching correctly, you are not teaching by the painting by number system anyway. Developing your own assessments sounds like a positive.

The SAT scores for Catholic schools come in higher than FCPS---I believe they were 1670 for 2012-13.

Here are the openings available in the Arlington Archdiocese right now. This is 38 schools so this doesn't look like a lot of openings:

I have to laugh at the stupidity of "FairfaxTeach."

Are you familiar with how elementary schools in this vaunted county are run? There's no standard curriculum. There's a matrix of schools that the state publishes. And each teacher rolls their own curriculum. And the elementary school classwork and homework assignments are a hodgepodge collection of random crap that the teachers pull off of the internet.

It's idiotic. It's wildly inconsistent between teachers within a grade. And what's even better is that more often than not, the homework that these wonderful Fairfax County teachers, who teach for the best government school system in the country, send home is often wildly inconsistent with the methods and approaches that the kids are taught during the day.

Or maybe you're right and these great County teachers are not rolling their own and are using what the wonderful Gatehouse Palace develops for them. If that's the case, this county's government school system is even more retarded than I thought.

FCPS is certainly going down a steep hill. Please do not blame it on the SOLs- put the blame where it belongs- on an arrogant and increasingly incompetent administration and coddled and spoiled teachers waiting for retirement. There are quite a few good teachers but they are being outnumbered more every year. The bloat in FCPS is criminal that blame goes to the head clown Jack Dale. The waste in the schools almost makes the federal govt. blush. So glad we pulled out and went private. Should have done so long ago.

The quality of Fairfax schools will correlate with the demographics of the schools. White/Asian = Good School. Black /Hispanic = Bad school. Teachers who stand in front of white students are good teachers because the students have an average IQ of 100 or above. Teachers who stand in front of black and brown students are bad teachers because the students have an average IQ of 85 to 90 at best.

Demography is destiny and as Fairfax becomes more "vibrant" the quality of education will follow.

Teachers arent to blame our government is for importing 50 million Aztecs, Mayans and other assorted Native Americans.

John Paul the Great just opened in 2008. They graduated 117 in 2013 and not sure about this year. So they probably have around 600-700 students? That's 600-700 more than they had before 2008.

There will probably be a downturn since the numbers in the population at the high school level are lower (and this is nationwide), but then it will pick up again as there is a higher number of students in elementary and coming into elementary. The increase is going to come in about six years or so . . .

Question for you -- do you have reliable figures on O'Connell's current enrollment? Last I checked, their website says they have 1160 students, but that was last year. That figure included 260 from the class of 2017.

There are real problems at that school, which I noted above. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of further enrollment deterioration. Their strategy to improve enrollment seems to be to beef up their sports programs, and generate interest that way. I'm sure there will be a lot of excitement after three consecutive 5-5 football seasons.

Meanwhile...

71% of our current PVI faculty members have a minimum of a Master's degree in either education or their subject area being taught. This includes 5 PhD's and one Medical Doctor. The average teaching experience of the current PVI teacher is 15.8 years.

This might be true in some Catholic schools, but not all. I am an O'Connell graduate and the alumni magazine each year introduces the new teachers that have been hired for the upcoming school year. There are usually a few with doctoral degrees, and many more have master's degrees including in math and science areas.

gerrymanderer2 (OP) posts several lies on ffu daily - many\.10think he's a fx co gov worker who is getting paid to do it for false DNC democrat "advertising". he floods ffu with useless posts to bump down major news, posts fecal matter, mutilated bodies, child porn, foreign drug ads and sneaker ads, tells people to kill themselves and government should seize them and put them on psych pills in prison - decided by democrat gov of course, promotes kangaroo courthouse trials, gives anti-religious rants, gives satanic ritual rants, posts black males with large dicks on white young females, portends white low birth rate and fall of USA, food tampering/poisoning, and anything possible to DEMORALIZE white people on ffu. (perhaps a chinese prisoner or isis member - but definitely knowledgeable of fx co gov from the inside at times). the website operator has told him "not to post or return" which are still posted - not removed, by the sysop: not because of a political leaning but for continual illegal and gross spam along with messages that are only to demoralize if not kill others. he/she plays at financial terrorism as well: continuall reporting false financial data, and fake emergency please from (fake members of the community he makes up)

the only way that'd happen is illegal aliens - who are more likely catholic (backstabbing ones) that who else

DROP DEAD G2 - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DIOCESE PROFITTING OFF OF ILLEGALS

The Catholics have always been good educators, which is why non-Catholic families sometimes send their kids to those schools. Their religion reeks of superstition though, and they basically worship statues.

UDA all the way
fuck the pope and the IRA.

the population increase is because papists dont know about contraception. aside from the muslims, mormons and latinos, irish catholics are the only demographic breeding above replacement.. of those four I only like the latinos! mifumar mucho mota y nessisita trabojanos para mi
