Kava Drinkers in Northern Virginia
Posted by: FrankieDidg ()

Hi, I've recently been getting into kava kava, the South Pacific drink of relaxation. Are there other Kava drinkers in this area? If so, it might be nice to get together for a kava party some time...

Good to see you've fully embraced the gay lifestyle.

Yes there are a few. 'Awa is shared sometimes when we go kanikapila. Or more accurately when we say we'll go kanikapila, but end up sitting around bullshitting and drinking 'awa. And that's awesome. I do wish we had a nakamal around these parts!

Where do you get yours? You grinding your own root? Or using one of the powders?

There used to be a natural foods store that kept the dried root in stock. They closed about 15 years ago :(

Now we stick to the pre-ground stuff and pastes. We too lazy to grow our own :)

Probably just as well - grow the wrong type and you could fuck yourself up a bit, I hear. I've still got some squirreled away but it's getting old, although it still numbs the lips. And tastes like dirt.

I once ended up in a nakamal two seats away from a sweaty guy in t-shirt who turned out to be the PM of Vanuatu, shitty little place too, not at all fancy. I was with a guy who knew him and we all raised a shell.

A dingy nakamal? You don't say :)

Seeing this thread made me crave a night cap. Just mixed up a batch and will have two shells before bed. Two shells of two-day :)

They're usually crappy but I've sat in a few that were almost bars, homemade bars to be sure but almost a permanent structure. This place was like a packing crate with a tin roof. Strange spot to meet a head of state.

Suppose him ready, we kakai.

My mouth is numb. My stomach is falling asleep.

What I would give for an order of met sticks right now or some laplap.

'Evening. I'm about to lie down.

I'll take a coconut crab - you can keep the laplap. Might go dig out my old kava.

Where do you get yours, bula bula? I'm guessing my source on Malekula is probably dead by now.

Cool... I've only been drinking kava the past month or so, and I've been using powdered kava from Nakamal @ Home and Bula Kava house... still working on the best preparation method, but it's definitely a nice alternative to alcohol :)

Too bad there are no local kava bars...

Abelard, I get mine through a couple of farms in Hawaii. Look up Kulea Farm - they ship all over the US. I think they even sell via Amazon. Their Isa 'Awa is a Papuan two-day strain. Nice, potent stuff.

You can also get Papuan and I think Vanuatan stuff through Amazon.

I also keep some of the Kava King brand micronized stuff on my shelves. For instant drinks. Their King's Reserve isn't great, but it's nice and quick. I do wonder how it compares to the Bula House instant.

Most area Safeways and Giants also keep the Yogi brand anti-stress kava-kava tea in stock. It's more herbal tea, but not bad for a light drink at work. Numbing effect is slight, but noticeable.

FrankieDidg, how did you find out about this great elixir? I think the closest kava bar is in southern Florida.

>still working on the best preparation method, but it's definitely a nice alternative to alcohol :)

I had my first shells in a tiny village on a very remote island, pounded to a pulp in a hollowed-out stump and mixed in an old bucket. Preparation was not at all fancy, just a lot of swishing around. Potent stuff, and if anybody unfamiliar with it wants to replicate the taste, just mix a cup of water with a handful of dirt and add a few drops of oragel.

It's definitely a nice alternative to alcohol, if you don't mind the spitting. My cousin was in Port Villa when they had a stern lesson in the relative effects of both. Seems that back then (probably 15 years ago) more people were getting money than they used to, so folks would buy cheap booze on payday friday. Rather than having a few shells of kava at the nearest nakamal and sleeping it off, they got all drunk and frisky.

That day there'd been a list published in the local newspaper of all the 'local' businesses that were actually owned by foreigners and it was a surprisingly long list. The drunk crowd decided that something should be done so they went right down the list burning places down. I don't think anybody got hurt but the prevailing wisdom was that this would never have happened if people would just stick to kava.

I read about kava many years ago in this old book from the seventies called "Legal Highs"... I tried it a couple times over the years, but couldn't get past the taste and reverse tolerance until a couple months ago... glad I finally did!

So you drink crappy tasting tea to get sleepy for 9 hours? Something is out of balance in your life because a good rewarding day of work and family will do the same and you dont have to drink something that tastes like ass...

If you need to get your jollies by criticizing other people, then something is clearly out of balance in your life as well.

>So you drink crappy tasting tea to get sleepy for 9 hours?

It's more than just sleepy, it's definitely intoxicating. It's a relaxing buzz and doesn't seem to have alcohol's abusive side effects. I'm sure it's toxic to your liver but booze is worse, as are most of the medicines you've got in your bathroom cabinet (virtually all of which are toxic at some dose).

You should try some - your body may be your temple but it's also your playground.

I'd like to try kava. Do you really need the cup and strainer?

The cup, naw. It's usually a coconut shell (which is why you have 'shells' of kava rather than cups) but it adds nothing. The strainer may not be all that important either - I never used one out on the island, and lots of the commercial stuff is pretty well ground up. I'll bet an old tea strainer will work just fine.

Be prepared for the taste, which really can be a bit foul. If it's good kava your mouth will get numb, but don't be alarmed. It's not considered inappropriate to spit a lot so you might want to drink it outside, which is why nakamals (little crappy homemade bars) are so popular. And bula bula was right, Amazon carries the real stuff (judging by the comments).

Oh, and don't mix your kava with booze. I've heard stories that your liver won't like that, although it's not supposed to be super dangerous. Choke down a couple of shells and wait for the numbness and the buzz, it's nice. And at the moment, legal.

Why do you hate homosexuals? Your intolerance is killing people.

I got the kava from Amazon. Been trying it for a few days after work. I finally caught a good buzz today.

Someone sounds like a judgmental dooshay to me...

"a good rewarding day of work and family" sounds pretty phony to me.

Where are we, 17th century New England?

KAVA WAKA powder -1 LB- Fijian High Quality Kava

Tastes pretty crappy but I've tasted worse pussy. I added raspberry flavoring I bought for my espresso machine.
