Despite being cheap, they were darned good. At least if your consciousness had been altered by something.

They saved money by using one container for catsup and mustard

Shake Shack is good. Five Guys is good. Elevation Burger is good. Heck, a Whopper with extra onion and mayonnaise is good. My favorites though would be Sweetwater and Amphora. Those two are basically the same burger but with different kinds of toppings.

Enough with the "Best what the fuck ever" in Fairfax. Who cares? There are hundreds of thousands of people here and you are going to rely on the eight people that respond to you question on an anonymous message board to be accurate? Just stop this shit already.

Why would you have cared? Plus, it's spelled 'ketchup'.

The foundation of human intelligence is the ability to pass information from one individual to another. Imagine the time and money that would be wasted if we all had to go individually to each and every burger joint in the county to find out which one was best? Me, I'm looking forward to enjoying a 29 Diner burger here in another month or so!

And you are relying on FFXU for "human intelligence"? That is classic!

I'm not sure how hamburgers became a "cerebral topic," but let's be honest. its not "American as apple pie" but rather its all about that burger.

Why not have this discussion, because it seems there aren't a lot of family owned original type of places anymore. Instead its all of the same, Five Guys, Freddy's, Smashburger, Elevation, etc.

Elevation burger is in a different zip code from Five Guys and Smashburger. But I think an E burger costs a little more. I guess it comes down to what youre willing to ingest. Just remember, no matter where you get your burger, its being prepared by either an angry confused high school kid or an illegal who came from a country where they drink water out of the drainage ditch.

And you can blame your county supervisors for that "sameness". FFX County started running all the mom and pop places out in the 80's. I have never lived anywhere with such a derth of food options. This county thrives on franchise owned businesses. Obviously the council members are somehow getting a kickback.

From some article, "Ketchup and catsup are simply two different spellings for the same thing, a modern, Westernized version of a condiment that European traders were introduced to while visiting the Far East in the late 17th century. What exactly that condiment was and where they found it is a matter of debate."

Also'
"Ketchup was one of the earliest names given to this condiment, so spelled in Charles Lockyer’s book of 1711, An Account of the Trade in India: “Soy comes in Tubbs from Jappan, and the best Ketchup from Tonquin; yet good of both sorts are made and sold very cheap in China”. Nobody seems quite sure where it comes from, and I won’t bore you with a long disquisition concerning the scholarly debate on the matter, which is reflected in the varied origins given in major dictionaries. It’s likely to be from a Chinese dialect, imported into English through Malay. The original was a kind of fish sauce, though the modern Malay and Indonesian version, with the closely related name kecap, is a soy sauce.

Like their Eastern forerunners, Western ketchups were dipping sauces. I’m told the first ketchup recipe appeared in Elizabeth Smith’s book The Compleat Housewife of 1727 and that it included anchovies, shallots, vinegar, white wine, sweet spices (cloves, ginger, mace, nutmeg), pepper and lemon peel. Not a tomato in sight, you will note — tomato ketchup was not introduced until about a century later, in the US, and caught on only slowly. It was more usual to base the condiment on mushrooms, or sometimes walnuts.

The confusion about names started even before Charles Lockyer wrote about it, since there is an entry dated 1690 in the Dictionary of the Canting Crew which gives it as catchup, which is another Anglicisation of the original Eastern term. Catchup was used much more in North America than in Britain: it was still common in the middle years of the nineteenth century, as in a story in Scribner’s Magazine in 1859: “I do not object to take a few slices of cold boiled ham ... with a little mushroom catchup, some Worcester sauce, and a pickle or so”. Indeed, catchup continued to appear in American works for some decades and is still to be found on occasion.

There were lots of other spellings, too, of which catsup is the best known, a modification of catchup. You can blame Jonathan Swift for it if you like, since he used it first in 1730: “And, for our home-bred British cheer, Botargo, catsup, and caveer”. [Caveer is caviar; botargo is a fish-based relish made of the roe of the mullet or tunny.] That form was also once common in the US but is much less so these days, at least on bottle labels: all the big US manufacturers now call their product ketchup.

Simple question: complicated answer!

Everybody knows that. The distinction was between Heinz which has always spelled it "ketchup" and cheap inferior products such as Hunt's and Del Monte that once insisted on calling it "catsup" but have more recently seen the labeling light. Today, virtually all of the product on grocery store shelves is labeled "ketchup". Heinz is still the star, however, and not by just a little bit.

Counter Burger at Reston Town Center. Pricey ($12 for a burger and fries), but by far the best beef and cooked properly.

It's called CAPITALISM, and you obviously hate it.

Not so much capitalism as simple economics. An upscale casual place out there might serve a thousand meals a day. How are Mom & Pop going to manage that? Mon & Pop is actually a very bad and very inefficient business model. It is suited to a very limited set of market conditions. That's why they all go away. There is no conspiracy among local governments.

Do you know what I was responding too? He said that it's a problem w/ Mom & Pop stores going out of business in favor of chains. I was disagreeing with him, hence my comment about Capitalism.

We obviously agree, so I don't know why you're attacking me.

Attacking? Simply stating that (whether capitalized or not) capitalism is not the reason why mom-and-pops fail. The simple economic principles that ultimately bring them down operate across all sorts of socio-economic systems. It was the other poster that I was filing a concurring criticism of, hence the reference to imaginary local government parricidal conspiracy plots.
