New Beer Brewery Coming to Vienna
Posted by: Brew Me ()
Date: June 26, 2014 05:13PM

Bringing “good beer” to Vienna is going to have to wait.

Matt Greer was set to open his hybrid gastro-pub and brewery, Caboose Brewing Company, next month but due to permit issues, he is now looking at a late August or early September opening.

“It’s mostly just the approval process for building permits,” Greer says. “We got stuck in a queue with the town of Vienna. They just have a special way of doing things.” Greer chose Vienna to open his brewery because he didn’t want Whole Foods to be the only place to get a good beer with his friends.

According to Greer, Vienna’s board of architectural review only meets once a month. Documentation for changes in his brewery are required 45 days in advance so missing a day can set approval back by one month.

Although the brewery won’t open until the end of summer, it has been busy. Over the last two months, Caboose Brewing Company has been brewing beer, such as Crazy Train Tripel (9.7%), a beer with “moderate spiciness and fruity esters that compliment its slightly peppery finish…[and is] brewed with a clone of the legendary Westmalle yeast strain,” says Greer; Car Hopper IPA (7.5%) described by Greer as having an “intense hop aroma reminiscent of pine, citrus and fresh herbs”; and Raspberry Wheat (6%), made with real raspberries and a focus on “the tartness of the fruit rather than the sweetness,” says Greer. Unfortunately, the company can’t sell any of it.

Greer hopes to secure ABC approval within 30 days so the brewery can at least start selling growlers. Until then, Greer’s friends have been sipping on his beers for free and the public can buy gift certificates through its Facebook page. “Once we’re open, it’s going to be a lot of fun for everybody,” Greer says.

With a name like Caboose Brewing Company, is Laurie Cole one of the investors?

Sounds good, but WTF does gastro-pub mean? I've seen this term a lot recently. Seems like a marketing ploy.

Apparently not the only one.

It's now known as the area's mattresses store Mecca.

As you may know, you can't just serve booze in Virginia. 45% of your annual gross (exclusive of beer and wine sales) must come from food sales, or you are at risk of losing your liquor license. So, every place has to do food, the question is what kind? "Gastro" comes from "gastronomy" via the word "gastronome", a word for a person who appreciates fine food. The Vienna Inn serves gravy fries. A gastro-pub might serve boudin blanc in black truffle sauce.

It is indeed next to the W&OD Trail, but at the very back end of Mill Street. The train station and the actual red caboose are at the front end of Mill Street.

Envy-Boy probably can't afford actual Chantilly either. I'm guessing he rents out a room in the trailer park and does odd jobs about the place for a living.

Residents of Vienna rise up and become one. We must avenge the onslaught of hatred towards our community. We know we are better than the rest of Fairfax County and we must prove it. Follow me into history...............

Vienna seems to be filled with Envy-Boys. A successful businessman, with experience that would have been invaluable to Town Council, could not get elected. It seems like Vienna citizens are envious.

If you mean the candidate that wanted to speed up the bulldozing of Vienna to make the town a ghetto of McMansions, then I would say that the people of Vienna voted correctly in not placing him on the Town Council.

They are envious of his success. They were envious of Brehony's success, too, which is why she did not get elected when she ran. Either they are envious of successful people or threatened by them.

Hmmm. Not mad. I'm retired, thanks (luxuriously so, in fact). Happy as a clam. Have Nats season tickets. Take in Spring Training annually. Enjoy a pitcher and four or five chili dogs as much as the next guy (maybe more). Happily married for 45 years. Interesting: I live in Vienna as well, and for all you know, you and I might share the same vista. One thing we, thankfully, don't share is your shallow sense of douchebag entitlement....bragging about your seven-figure home, the fact that you have your lawn cared for by a landscaping service?

My townhouse (Old town Alexandria) isn't worth a million, but its pretty close. Having an expensive house, does not mean your rich. I'm sure a lot of my neighbors have more money than you, yet they live in small homes. If I really wanted a 7,000 sqft Mcmansion, I could sell and move out to Vienna or some other boring bland place.

You're retired too, so just you and your wife sharing the 8 bedroom pad?

A townhouse, eh? I have one of those as well. It's on Capitol Hill though. A bit up from Eastern Market. Used to use it a lot for business. Now it's more of just a home in town. Great place to crash after a Nats game.

I don't know how much money any of your neighbors might have, and I suspect that you don't either. I know how much I have, and statistically speaking at least, it would be very unlikely that your statement would be true.

4/3 now actually. 3200 sqft. Very large property, beautifully landscaped. We spent some years looking around for places we might like to retire to when the time came, but nowhere was as nice as it is here. Poipu Beach was tempting, but no baseball and so far off the beaten path. So with the kids gone, we put about $400K into tearing up the inside and remaking the house into just what we wanted it to be for the long haul. And here we and the various animals all are. Everything we could want right at our fingertips. Too bad so many will never live like this.

How on earth would living either inside or outside the town of Vienna be relevant to where the new gastro-pub is going to be located or what one even is? I don't think you can answer that question.

Well, there's the ballgames, and the travel, and all the dining out. Over to Ovvio Osteria for lunch yesterday. The wife likes it. Most I can say for it is that every time I've been there, one thing has been good. It was the cream of spinach soup this time. Everything else was blah and ordinary. Today, it was the Hay-Adams in downtown DC at the lunch hour, and who knows where tomorrow. It can all get pretty hectic, so it is nice to relax from time to time with a little shooting fish in a barrel. That's where the goobers at FFXU come in.

Might they serve a beer-braised Osso Buco? That would be reason enough to venture to the end of Mill St. Beer-braised short ribs would also suffice.

It's what Vienna's best known for.

Mattress central for NoVA.

Ask anyone around here where to buy a mattress and they'll immediately respond "Vienna of course!"

If Mattress Land wasn't copyrighted, they could change the name. lmao

Vienna residents are oddly defensive about their town being Mattress Mecca...

Living in the barrio of Sterling, as I do, where life is cheap, and we are forced to sleep on industrial waste and rat droppings, I can only dream (when I can actually get to sleep) of a place where mattresses are just taken for granted...sigh

Sterling mattress places

https://www.google.com/maps/search/mattress/@39.0126785,-77.4123994,14z

8 within a 4 mile radius. Fuckin tard. I bet you are the dumb fuck who wrote that article. I've never once heard of people sayin Vienna is known for mattress stores other than this douche writer. Wolf Trap? Restaurants like Maple Avenue and Bazins which are consistently voted tops in DC metro, being a community instead of sprawl hell, Jammin Java, these are what I normally hear people talking about in terms of Vienna.

Enjoy your double the mattress store advantage in sterling you douche cunt. You have two mattress warehouses within 2 miles of each other.

According to Wikipedia:

Quote

Vienna is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, it had a population of 15,687.

Sterling, Virginia is a census-designated place in Loudoun County, Virginia. The population as of the 2010 United States Census was 27,822.

Vienna has roughly one mattress store per 3900 residents while Sterling has one per 3500 residents.

Lol, and if you included the same swatch as a "census designated place" Vienna's 3 main zip codes equal 60000+ people. Making it 1 per 15000. Sterling, even with being a nebulous blob of an area with a phone double population STILL beats it for more mattress stores per capita.

Hilarious.

What's more funny is that you idiots would actually go so far as to try to calculate per capita mattress stores in attempting to protect the precious pretentiousness of Vienna. lmao!

I don't live in Sterling so if you want to vie with it for the mattress king title, knock yourselves out. But even on that basis you lose since you have to scale to +4X the area to try to make it work. Vienna still wins in mattress store density. Which is the more significant factor in giving an area it's mattress-storey flavor. Vienna proudly remains the Mattress Store Capital of the Capital Area! When NoVa residents think mattresses, they think Vienna!

Sleep on it biotches.

Pretty cool place, love the beer. The food menu is a bit questionable at best though. I am a fan of farm to table but they are trying to go to hoity toity IMO. I'm not saying you need to serve a menu exclusively offering jalepeno poppers and cheese sticks, but serve some real food along with liver mousse and pate.

If those were any good, it would be worth $4/pint or something close to that. VI serves chilled piss for less, but when you move to their craft brew selection, those 8-10 ounce chilled mugs at about $3.50 are not such great deals.

The message to be taken away from this is that Caboose's beer offerings are not very good, regardless of the price.

And, as another poster speculated, it is full of 35 year olds who think the beer is good because all they have ever had is Bud Light, etc.

You should give Caboose another try. When you do, be sure to sample the "Half-Wit." (It is a Belgian style white beer, with sweet and bitter orange peel, coriander notes, and grains of paradise.) It should suit you perfectly.

I get jokes...

But the six tasters that I had do not evidence that Caboose has a decent beer in any of the styles that I tried.

The farm-to-table food concept (I hate using that term) is worthy of consideration. I have not tried the food.

But Caboose has missed the mark. Good Beer. Then Good or Great Food.

Tell me that the beers have improved from what they were at the opening (a couple of days in for me), and I will give Caboose another try.

Since you have called me out, if you can't tell me that the beers have improved, I am going to go on Yelp and a couple of other sites giving the beer a negative review. I have held off on that up to this point.

Your move, Laurie's Caboose...

Knock yourself out. There are several dozen reviews on Yelp. Most are positive, so one negative review will not be fatal. In fact, the owners are responsive so you might well be doing them a favor.

Recently I observed a builder implement these new guidelines for tree preservation during lot redevelopment on Oak Street SW. I reached out to the builder on the project to inquire what drives the decision to preserve trees vs. remove. Dennis Rice of JDA Custom Homes is the builder for this project; here is what he had to say: he was able to save the trees on this particular lot because he was able to shift the footprint. The set back requirements often make it difficult to do so in the front of the house. He also noted that it is frequently the new homeowner who drives the decision to keep or remove trees; in this case the homeowner wanted the trees saved. Rice indicated that it is his preference to save the healthy trees on all projects
whenever possible.

You really should apologize.

I would go back if they served bacon jalapeno mac and cheese.
