9-1-1 in chaos
Posted by: WhatUDontKnow ()
Date: June 24, 2014 04:53PM

When you need help you call 9-1-1, when 9-1-1 needs help where do they go? Not to the county Board of Supervisors as Ed Long and Susan Woodruff continue to ignore blatant issues of dishonesty, retaliation, favoritism, and ineptitude of the managerial staff. This also includes Deputy County Exec and former Chief of Police David Rohrer who has turned a blind eye to the issues presented to him from 9-1-1 employees at the public safety center.

Less than 3 years after unethical activities derailed a sergeant’s process in the Fairfax County Police Department, the 9-1-1 center is embroiled with a similar controversy with the Communications Operations Supervisor process. The original process held in Oct-November of 2013 was overturned by Director Steve Souder after 18 employees grieved the process. The highlights of the grievance involved miscommunication, unethical dissemination of testing questions, incorrect and inconsistent scoring issues, and a changing of scores to prevent some from being promoted and promote others.

The repeat of the process (held April-May 2014) reflected even less managerial prudency as the process did not require consideration of resumes, time with the agency, public safety expertise, nor if applicants had actually dispatched before (or for any reasonable amount of time). The new process promoted individuals with less than 3 years working (average public safety industry standard is 5 years) and cast aside employees with 20+ years serve and have at least two if not all 3 of the skill sets required at the dispatch center.

The current CAD system that helps dispatch the emergency response units is constantly failing, crashing, and freezing up as caused the police department to seek a new records management system and the fire department to look for a additional programs to supplement the failings of the current Intergraph system.

With more than 30 positions sitting unfilled employees are overworked and due to excessive spending in previous fiscal years overtime has been cut by 50%. Increased work load, no raises in 4 years, inept management, nepotism, retaliatory practices, faulty Computer Aided Dispatch system, .. it's no wonder the 9-1-1 operators have low morale and are quitting in droves. Do you feel safe??

What about this?

Fairfax City, Region to Replace Emergency Alert Systems; Fairfax City residents will have to sign up for alerts, even if they previously signed up.

Office of emergency management is different from 9-1-1 ..the new alert system will be pretty good. BUT it still doesn't answer 9-1-1 calls. Time for change all over the county.

I guess WhatUDontKnow you wasn't promoted? 9-1-1 is important to me for my illness, I would hate to know a delay was due to a poor system and poorly functioning call takers/disparchers. If that is true what is written who do we'd talk to?

Talk to your county supervisor because yes 2 calls last were not dispatched correctly and equipment was not allocated as it should have been. An ongoing situation.

It doesn't help that John Niemiec, the president of the Fire Union promised to help but has chosen to also turn a blind eye after talking the big talk. Nothing promised was done and we are languishing with horrible management and recently promoted assistant supervisors that are not qualified. People are trying to leave in droves and are willing to take anything they can get. When someone dies because we have call takers who are inept at their job but are allowed to continue to take calls because they are liked by management and when we promote employees to supervisors who should have been reprimanded for poor call taking do not ask what went wrong.

Is Steve Souder riding Gary's old Rascal around the center? That guy looks like walking death. The situation at DPSC is due to many RIP's, house cleaning is in order, that means all of you with 25 or more years in, out you go.

Yes, they all wear yoga pants and assume the position while dispatching or taking calls so the men working in the center can spank their butts or rip open the yoga pants and give them a cream pie.

The state that DPSC is in now can be directly attributed to their becoming an independent agency, no longer under the umbrella of the police department. It wasn't a bed of roses, to be sure, but the PD ran a pretty tight ship in the old EOC/PSCC days. The blatant favoritism, retaliation, and railroading of "unwanted" employees has gotten worse and worse since the agency is under civilian direction. Don't know what the solution could be, and the union can't or won't step in to help.

Just my humble opinion, ymmv.

Not sure how a EMT with a sorry skirt is the problem with 9-1-1... the issue as stated in the beginning is up top .. and getting worse .. since dispatchers are the red headed step children of public safety no one cares (that is until they error as all humans do).. but please forget that hostile work environment and go back to talking about short skirts. Really????
