Does anyone remember an accident from the 80s where a pick up full of teens left the road and killed everyone except for two or three teens that were in the cab?

You are the man. Forgot it was in MD.

April 23, 1979 -- Ten teen-agers riding in a pickup truck were killed in Odenton when the truck hit three trees on Patuxent River Road. The driver admitted during a trial that he had drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana before the accident. He was convicted of 10 counts of auto manslaughter.

Never understood why the driver is charged. They all knew he was drunk and agreed to get in the car. Just like the recent case in Potomac.

Does anyone know the outcome of the trial?

The driver was charged because he broke the law. It was his responsibility for the safety of those with him. What if he killed a family in another car instead of hitting a tree? He also agreed to not drive impaired when he got his license. His passengers paid for their poor judgement with a death sentence. Jail is a light sentence in comparison. With privilege comes responsibility. Well, not so much now. Do what you want, then cry , hire a lawyer, make excuses, and blame the victims. Gotta love the new world order.

Had to do a little hunting. His name was Alan Cole and he was convicted of ten counts of automobile manslaughter and was given a three year suspended sentence. The reactions ranged from outraged to acceptance. Details are here:

Maybe in the last 10-15 years on Montgomery County/Potomac area as I recall.

Might have been on River Road?

A 16-17 year old girl driving her new BMW convertible with friends in the car. Lost control, car hit a tree, cut the car in half and most if not all died as I recall?

Seem to remember the parents of one killed sued the parents of the driver as well?

I'm curious as to what kind of lives these people had since, especially Alan Cole. I found an Alan Cole, born in '57, of Baltimore died in 2014. Wonder if that's him.

Does anyone remember anything like this?

something involving Mt Vernon High/area kids in the late 70's/early 80's at Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the story was that beer sales went later in the night/morning in Md, these kids loaded into pickup truck headed to Md for late night beer purchase (remember beer age was 18 then) and truck crashed at on ramp to bridge from Rt 1?

Sound right to anyone?

Other than that, I'm sure there are quite a few

The driver in that case was Jonathan P. Reinemer, who was 19 at the time. He killed the three passengers in his car, 18-year-olds Alana J. Klingebiel and Wallace Simpson, Jr. and 17-year-old Deborah L. Rodgers, as well as the driver of another car, 22-year-old Lawrence O'Brien.

O'Brien's fiance, 22-year-old Cathy Storey, suffered such severe facial injuries in the crash that she was unrecognizable, and was confused with Alana Klingebiel, who had in fact died on the operating table at Fairfax Hospital.

It wasn't until after Klingebiel's body had been cremated by the Storey family with the intention of burying the remains with those of Larry O'Brien that Cathy woke up, and the fact that the two women's identities had been confused became apparent.

Additionally, 49-year-old Fred Thorp got a phone call at about 6:30 AM to come down to Fairfax Hospital. He positively identified one of the two female victims as his daughter Janet. When he got home at 8:00 AM Fred told his wife their daughter was dead, but about a half-hour he found out that his daughter was still alive and had nothing at all to do with the accident.

Reinemer was so drunk up that a blood test taken six hours after the crash showed his blood alcohol content was still .12%. Testimony at his trial estimated his BAC was between .18% and .22% at the time of the accident.

Jonathan P. Reinemer was convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter on April 14, 1981, and sentenced on May 4 to 12 years in prison- three years for each of the people he killed- with 10 years suspended.

Reinemer continued to rack up traffic and other minor offenses. He was convicted of speeding in Delaware on May 31, 1986. He was convicted of drug possession in New Jersey on September 28, 1989.

He also racked up three DUI convictions in Fairfax county: on October 18, 1990, November 13, 1990, and May 21, 1991. The Fairfax County Circuit Court adjudicated Reinemer as a habitual offender on April 18, 1991 and tried to reimpose the remainder of his 1981 sentence, but this was overturned on appeal. (See Reinemer v. Commonwealth, http://va.findacase.com/research/wfrmDocViewer.aspx/xq/fac.19930608_0040536.VA.htm/qx)

He racked up a few more convictions after that, which you can see at https://www.2findpeople.com/court/VA/JONATHAN/_/REINEMER

It looks like he subsequently moved to Montana. There's a record of him filing bankruptcy there in April 2013.

Interesting stuff.

So it appears Reinemer is a serial loser. Didn't exactly learn his lesson, did he?
Should have been locked up for good a long time ago.

Probably not, since the article said Cole was 18 in 1979, so born in '57 is a bit early.

I think that chick wrecked on the G.W. Parkway, going really fast in her new BMW.
