It looks like an old grocery store layout. I'm thinking before Basics there was probably a Giant or Safeway in there.

I vaguely remember the Grand Unions. They were around until the early 90s like Murphy's, Woolworth's, Dart Drug, and Mcrory's. Grand Union was not as good as the pre-merger Giant though. Not even close.

The grocery store in Rolling Valley mall (now a Shoppers) was originally a Super Fresh which was what the A&P chain later became. It opened as a Super Fresh and never an A&P.

The mall did have a Dart Drug but also had a Dart Home next door, a then competitor to Hechinger's the local home improvement chain.

In Old Keene Center, A&P was where Rhiannons, Austin Grill, and Washington Sports are (were).

It was never a super fresh. You have your malls mixed up.Old keene center had the super fresh and rolling Valley had the A&P.

I'll second what oldtimer wrote in that it was an A&P. I used to go between A&P, Dart Drug and Woolco in my misspent youth (between getting kicked out of Anitas for just eating chips and Pizza Hut for always getting the pizza with the hair in it).

Definitely an A&P in Rolling Valley. We used to go there or Dart Drug to buy candy to sneak in the movie theater. And i took dance at the Shirley Smeak dance school Also, where Anita's now is was a donut shop. And does anyone remember Hillary's Ice Cream?

In the 80s I worked at Rhiannon's. THE adult playground on Northern Virginia...

Rhiannon's, gotta love it."Old Time Burke", I remember everything you posted. I was 4 or 5, and took ballet and tumbling at Rolling Valley Shopping Center, that was when The mall was "indoors", the movie theater was still there, and they had those strange outdoor alleys outside the facade, I now know those "alleys" were for the dumpsters. There was a pizza place there that was owned by the guy in that famous Viet Nam photo. After that my Mom moved me to a dance studio in Saratoga, can't remember the name...Hillary's Ice Cream was the shit!

The area that is Washington Sport Club used to have a western wear store called Tylers. Drug Fair was in the now Walgreen's location. The grocery store went from Grand Union to Basics to Fresh Fields to Whole Foods.

Victor's was there back in the day. A little smaller I think though. Erol's used to do a big business. There was a Carvel Ice Cream store, too.

In the 1800s it was part of a mill that produced buttons and belt buckles. during the civil war, it was raided many times and finally burned by advancing union troops in 1865. After that, it was taken over by the Moreno family and they used it as a sheep farm for many years. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the sheep were frequently raped and bestiality charges were leveled against the family. After the family moved to Reston in disgrace, the land was turned over to the Arthur Treacher's corporation. There was a beautiful Arthur Treacher's on this site until it was turned into an Ace Hardware and then a Basics grocery. Then, finally, it became the Whole Foods it is today.

Today you got the bakery, the deli, the salad bar..EZ to go to a grocery and put a good Samwhich together on the Cheap!

DAJAX Now I don't think the place was a Safeway..Maybe it was an A&P ..I only shopped at Giants and a few Safeways then..

I bought a place in West Springfield in '92.

Whole Foods was a Basics at that time. Prices were crazy cheap in that place. I still have an aluminum stock pot I bought there for about $3. Bags of USDA Ungraded chicken parts went for seventeen cents a pound on sale.

I am pretty sure Tiyaki Grill was where it is now.

The jeweler, the dry cleaner, and Victor's were all there at the time. Rhiannon's was either the second or third business from the west end of the center. There was a shoe or clothing store on that end. I think the Hair Cuttery was there back then, too. Looks like it's gone now.

I can't remember if that Collectables (sic) store was there back then.

There was either an Ace or True Value hardware store about where the Walgreen's is now. There was also a Rite Aid pharmacy.

Basics became Fresh Fields which became Whole Foods. Austin Grill opened in the late '90s. I don't remember when Starbuck's moved there.

When PETCO moved into where WSC later would be, they combined a number of units to include where Rhiannon's was.

Over the years, there was a used computer store (Renaissance, I think), a Chicken Out, and an ABC store.

The pet store (Petco?) that was there before the WSC had their grooming operation in the front window. They had shower tables for the pets, and it was funny to see dogs getting shampooed or blow dried as I walked by.

My wife and I joined WSC. Before it opened, I told her that the pet grooming area would be the women's showers in the front window.

What I didn't know was that there would be so many hot women at that gym. It had better eye candy than even the Bally's in Lincolnia used to have in the 90's.
