Watching You Watch: The Tracking Ecosystem of Over-the-TopTV Streaming Devices

ABSTRACT The number of Internet-connected TV devices has grown signifi-cantly in recent years, especially Over-the-Top (“OTT”) streamingdevices, such as Roku TV and Amazon Fire TV. OTT devices offeran alternative to multi-channel television subscription services, and are often monetized through behavioral advertising. To shedlight on the privacy practices of such platforms, we developed asystem that can automatically download OTT apps (also known aschannels), and interact with them while intercepting the networktraffic and performing best-effort TLS interception. We used thissmart crawler to visit more than 2,000 channels on two popularOTT platforms, namely Roku and Amazon Fire TV. Our resultsshow that tracking is pervasive on both OTT platforms, with trafficto known trackers present on 69% of Roku channels and 89% ofAmazon Fire TV channels. We also discover widespread practice ofcollecting and transmitting unique identifiers, such as device IDs,serial numbers, WiFi MAC addresses and SSIDs, at times over un-encrypted connections. Finally, we show that the countermeasuresavailable on these devices, such as limiting ad tracking options andadblocking, are practically ineffective. Based on our findings, wemake recommendations for researchers, regulators, policy makers, and platform/app developers.

it was already Nation Wide News that some cable providers put microphones in set top boxes and they NEVER warn consumers

in fact most consumers have no choice except to choose which company is spying on them (NOTE THEY ARE ALL GOVERNMENT DESIGNED AND HOOKED TO 911. that's the DOCIS specification)

it's another reason Bill Clinton PUSHED HARD TO RUIN PC APPLE AND EVERY OTHER TECHNOLOGY EXCEPT CABLE

the rip off technology? developed using grant money in Georgia by an ex-contractor with grants

the core of cable is that it is distributed clocks for broadcast.

DOCIS also specifies a "special control card" that can be inserted - these control cards convert the set top boxes to LOCAL TV BROADCASTING STATION POINTS, a fact little advertised - why the hell did you have to pay for technology you don't want and are being blocked from technolgy that should have been free you DO want (ie, porn) - why are you funding big business to own your ass??

youtube evades this by using other techniques.

It is a common thing in the modern world. I mean it is really easy to spy now. From this article http://smstrackers.com/tracking-someones-facebook-messages-is-now-possible/ I found out that I am able to monitor someone's facebook messages. Personally, I like this opportunity. It helps to reveal cheaters

I'm not surprised that the amount of TV streaming devices has been increasing as a cable TV is really expensive. Persaonally I cut the cord last year and I haven't regretted my choice. I bought Amazon Firestick and installed all necessary kodi addons that allow to watch everything I want like movies, TV shows, news, sport, live TV channels. The only thing I should do is to update Kodi from time to time, but this is an easy process. Usually I use a guide on https://www.firesticktricks.com/kodi-update.html and don't have any issues.
