Reagan on Gun Control after Assassination Attempt

President Ronald Reagan and gun control took center stage at the 1983 National Rifle Association convention. While the annual gathering often attracted politicians with pro-Second Amendment policies, Reagan’s involvement in this particular event was significant for a number of reasons.

About two years prior to the convention, Reagan was shot in an attempt on his life. Once the president recovered from the attack, pundits on both sides of the aisle began to wonder if the assassination attempt would push Ronald Reagan and gun control closer to one another. Reagan’s decision, then, to headline the NRA convention may have been in part an effort to make a firm statement that the president was still a firm believer in gun owners’ rights.

That idea was at the center of his speech to the NRA. Reagan did not shy away from addressing the shooting; in fact, he used it to oppose arguments by those who pushed for broad gun control laws. While such advocates claimed that adding new regulations for gun purchases would deter criminals from obtaining or using guns, Reagan countered with: “Those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed by gun control laws. I happen to know this from personal experience.”

Ronald Reagan had armed bodyguards. And, was wearing a "vest". Look at what happened to him and to them.

Why do Guntards always use "God" when they fail to make their point.

Pray to your "God", but we are now in control, and the guns are about to become extinct.

Why do gun grabbers always want to take guns away from law abiding citizens & never want to take them away from violent criminals, especially violent minority criminals?

WHY? WHY, gun grabbers, WHY?

We allowed you 200+ years to experiment with the safe ownership of guns, but you failed.

The time has arrived for us to take control of the situation, and end the mass murder by taking the guns away from those who can't refrain from the killing.

Over time you will see we are correct.

Guns have a 99.9% safety record. Only a tiny fraction of them are misused. Once you take in to account the number of lives saved each year and crimes that are stopped by someone with a gun, usually without a shot being fired, they are a great positive for society. It's only their denial of facts that allows gun grabbers to keep making flawed arguments.

The flaw in your fake argument is you DON'T take the guns away from those people. Those are precisely the people liberals allow to keep their guns. Liberals do take the weapons away from people who need to defend themselves against violent criminals that liberals allow to have guns.

You've been proved wrong from the beginning.

We will determine who will need firearms to maintain stability of the community, and those who violate the law will suffer severe punishment.

Gun collection will be conducted by appointed officials, and failure to allow collection will considered acts against the community.

We have a mandate from the people to control aspects of life within the community.

Our elected officials have much work to do, but in the end our community will be safe, and allow the oppressed to flourish.

Tell ya what, start with the niggers in a major city and let us know how that works out. Ban guns in Chicago or maybe DC and see how it goes.

The stupid REPUBLICANS freed the slaves and gave them guns. The dixiecrats be know it's too late to take the guns back without a race war. Therefore they must ban their sale across the board. White people should be ok cause we can maintain a surplus of guns and ammo unlike the niggers who will run out the first week after ammo sales are banned. Then we can take the empty guns away and restore natural order!

The use of racist language will be monitored, and will be be banned within the community.

Guns, racist thoughts and language, carbon emitting machinery will all be banned within the community.

In re the Reagan quote: It wasn't until the last years of his presidency that FL passed it's 'shall issue' concealed carry permit process, a first in the modern era. This had the effect of reducing violent crime by 30% in a few years and proved the efficacy of having armed citizens on the street as a deterrent to crime. Those with carry permits are 10x less likely than the average citizen to commit crimes and 3x less likely than police to commit crimes. Coming at the end of his presidency, Reagan could not have known of the deterrent value. Reagan was strongly opposed to gun control as meaningless, since the bad guys don't obey the law to start and the good guys aren't a problem - something which has been demonstrated by the decline in gun violence that accompanied the rise in gun ownership and issuance of 15 million carry permits over the last decades. Only libtards deny the reality that GUNS SAVE LIVES!

In re the Marx quote: Finally found something he got right.
