Late traffic ticket payment/missed court date!
Posted by: Stuck out of state ()

I got a traffic ticket in ffx city by the bowl america for making an illegal u-turn in Jan. I lost the ticket, and missed the prepayment deadline. I won't be able to go to the courthouse for the actual court date TODAY because I'm out of state at college.

1. Is my license going to be suspended?

2. How much more is this bill they're sending me that will have to be paid in 15 days? It was already 30 for the uturn and 61 for processing fees...

The woman at the courthouse didn't have the time of day to talk to me and tell me.
Any experience would be greatly appreciated!

Paula

It's unfortunate the lady didn't have time to tell you TODAY, but you did have well over a month to call and figure out the answer to your question or pay rather than waiting until the very last minute - way to be proactive and responsible.

Yes, your license will automatically be suspended. Hopefully you get pulled over in the upcoming days and they detain you for driving on a suspended license. Maybe then you will learn something since college apparently hasn't taught you shit.

You have something like 15 days to pay the ticket before a bench warrant is issued.

There is a number you can call to pay the ticket with a credit card (your only option). No I don't know the number, it's on the Ffx Co website, go look for it.

You're also gonna get hit for paying court fees.

Yes, this person can simply call the courts and speak to someone to get it paid over the phone. Seriously, this person was just lazy.

Dont wait on this or the sheriff will be calling you (or your parents cause that is probly your address listed with dmv) with an arrest warrant. Deal with it even if you have to drive home on your suspended lic.

Dono, that's not true. The worst that will happen is that his license will be suspended and he will have to pay the fine + late fee, the court costs, and the dmv reinstatement. The offense he committed was not a misdemeanor, and was prepayable, and was not an accident, and he was not compelled to appear. No failure to appear warrant will be issued. Nice try though.

Nakedshoplifter is also unfortunately wrong. He has the time frame right, but the wrong penalty. Straight from the Fairfax County Courts Website:

"Fines which remain unpaid after 15 days following the court date will result in DMV suspending your privilege to drive in Virginia."

In no place does it mention warrants being issued for failure to pay traffic fines.

if original poster paul (sorry i meant "paula") is crying over $91 then I doubt a lawyer is an option for him (sorry, HER)

if calling up and making the problem go away with a credit card even if there is a fee involved with that, why are we even talking about this just frickin call up and end the problem already

restonpeace the ticket was given in fairfax city is it possible their rules are different regarding unpaid fines

you also need to contact dmv to reinstate your va. driver's license. that is a separate fee from the court fees. call the fairfax city clerk of the court. they didn't have time to talk because tuesday and thursday they are busy with the court dockets. 703-385-7865

Thanks for looking up that info Reston you are correct, but I was intentionally being lazy so the OP would do the legwork to fix her problem instead of braying here for help.

you have 10 days to file an appeal de novo (new trial) for whatever reason. no big deal, just call the court and find out how to do it. Sometimes they will allow you to file a motion to re-hear depending on the circumstances (diff. than appeal). Give it a shot, no big deal, b/c if you don't appeal and don't pay the ticket, then yes, they will suspend your license (if va o/l) or privilege to drive in VA (if out of state o/l) because you failed to pay fines....good luck

I imagine you will be issued a bench warrant for at least $100 on top of what you already owe on the ticket. You will need to pay the warrant or you will be cuffed and brought in the next time you are pulled over. That is my best guess.

You're fucked. Your insurance will be ridiculous now. My 6 month premium went up 56 dollars for a running the stop sign ticket I got 4 years ago in another state.

And the point of filing an appeal is what? So he can get even more court fees and still be found guilty?

Truth is you can, and will, be arrested and taken to an adult detention center. If you wait too long to fix this situation you're going to have to take the written and driving test at the DMV before they will reinstate you, or actually give you a brand new license.

Moral of this story is that the longer you wait the worse it's going to get and I know this because in my youth I did what you did and got to enjoy all the above.
