NATO's purpose was to defend Europe. The European countries are not willing to pay the $ necessary to keep NATO strong enough to do its job. They want to rely on the US to keep paying the bills. If the Europeans aren't willing to pay for their own defense, why should we pay the bills for them? Just so Hunter can get a cushy job? Tell us, Joe, what does the US get from the alliance other than a bunch of arrogant pricks looking down their noses at the unsophisticated rubes in America; and that's just the Democrats. When you add the European scorn for the country that saved them twice from their own stupidity it's almost impossible to justify continuing NATO as it currently exists.

Anyone remember when the Germans were complaining that Trump was weakening NATO by threatening to pull out if they didn't pony up more deutsche marks for their own defense, all the while trying to ram through a deal with Mother Russia to build a pipeline from Russia into Germany?

For a long time the USA has been paying for the bulk of NATO. Its given the nations in NATO the chance to build up their social programs since for the most part the US has been paying for their defense costs. Trump is correct in making NATO countries pony up more dollars for their own defense. Maybe it will give the US a chance to enhance our own social programs, like fixing health care.
