I-66W/Rt 28: Stop the Insanity
Posted by: Fed up with Lack of Enforcement ()

The couple of miles before the I66W intersection and Rt 28N are one of the most accident prone areas in Fairfax. I frequently see police cars in the median opening before the interchange; they are running radar on the left lane. That radar, however, down nothing to reduce the unsafe lane changes that cause the accidents. For example:

(1) Drivers dart across solid white lines to cut off another car (or potentially crash) seeking to gain a coveted spot in the line of cars backed up from the exit. Meanwhile, the police run radar on the left lane.

(2) Drivers dart across more than one lane without regard to traffic in those lanes, causing drivers in the other lanes to suddenly slow down (causing a domino effect) or potentially crash into one of the cars in the lanes they are darting across. Meanwhile, the police run radar on the left lane.

(3) Drivers travel down the center right or center left lanes until almost the exit, and then dart into the right hand lane even though there isn't a spot in the right hand lane in which they can merge. That causes sudden stops and crashes. Meanwhile, the police run radar on the left lane.

The Sunday afternoon at least three crashes occurred.

Running radar accomplishes nothing. When will the police act to make the area safe?

Or when 28 is the usual stop-and-go mess, and you notice the person behind you constantly fumbling with their smartphone.

Put that shit away before you rear end somebody.

Selfish assholes causing accidents with other selfish assholes - Who cares.

Remove the police, and set up speed cameras to gain added revenue.

I didn't buy this bimmer to sit in the right lane, I'm waiving bye to VSP just over the hill while cutting across 4 lanes to the 28 exit.

I don’t think they care. They are just making revenue the safest, easiest way.

I think they stopped caring when it became politically advantageous to encourage law-breaking and cop-hating. When crying “racists” became a “get out of jail free” card.

When our local leaders disrespect law enforcement, lawlessness ensues.

My favorite is the left turn from 28 South onto 66 East. It's a 90 degree turn followed by an immediate merge on the ramp.

A few years back some hothead in a Corvette tried to hot foot it around me in the right lane. But, the traffic in my lane started to come to a stop and he pulled a Northern VA dive bomb right in front of me. I ended up doing a PIT maneuver on his left rear quaterpanel and since the point of contact was my right front on his left rear and I had 3 witnesses stop and say he dive bombed me, he got the ticket, the guilty verdict, the insurance increase, the points, the fines and the Carfax report now showing he had been in an accident and his '63 Split-Window was no longer all original.

Me? I hosed off the dust when I got home and called it a day...

Since you've already mentioned it, I guess I'll share the truth with you.

Running radar disproportionately affects white people, the most hateful and racist among us. Enforcing dive bombing, negligent driving, not paying attention and other bad behavior affects poor people that vote for me - so we generally prohibit that in this county.

Enforcement on the highway has dropped dramatically over the years as it is now generally unsafe for troopers to make traffic stops on the shoulder. These nuisance drivers and dive bombers are left to just work it out with everyone else, and they know nothing will be done to them. Expect the anarchy to worsen in the coming years.

It's ok...in 50 years we will all be driven by SkyNet. Thousands will die between now and then, of course...

on the bright side, they are redesigning that whole area into an interchange with flyover ramps. everything’s been ripped apart over the past 6 months and some of the concrete piers are already in place. it might be awhile before it opens but much progress was made in 2019. anything will be better than the current mess. it’s like the final lap of daytona out there some days.

Sorry, but we only have 12 years left before the planet is over too heated humans to live on.

Drove that route on Sunday. You really have to drive defensively and pay attention. All the points made by OP are true. People waiting to the last second to dart over to the exit lane is a major problem at most Beltway and 66 exits. Its also a problem at the Telegraph Rd. exit on 236. But, at least People are going slow there.

It's been a while since I drove through that area but when I did go that way to work, it was very obvious that VDOT has that traffic light and the one at Upperridge Drive (to the south) timed so that they're dumping 3 lanes worth of traffic onto I66 at the same time.

So if you are heading north and you are stopped at Upperridge, when you arrive at the 28/66 light you will be stopped if going north, and if going onto 66E you'll have 2 lanes worth of left-turn traffic to merge into.

7-11 does have really great burritos!
Green Chile and bean is my fave!
Why can’t one buy the same burritos at giant?

That is awesome!

Wonder what would happen if you drove down the road with one of those Raytheon radars they make for boats mounted on the roof of your car. Would that effectively jam the police radar?

WTF do people live that far away from their jobs?
Unless you are hauling a load of salsa, you do not belong on the interstate highways.

Yea that would be true anywhere else in the country but this is Virginia and 90% of the time the alternative to the (federally funded) interstate is a shitty 2 lane road that hasn't been upgraded since Governor Byrd.
