Change school start times later!

I'm tired of reading all the threads and editorials by parents who are concerned their kid wont be able to go to swim practice and do their homework. If school start times are changed then I will have to sit in less rush hour traffic, and I won't have to get up so early. Now kids, on the other hand, who say they won't have enough time, just need to take the coop program- you get the last period of the day off. The studies show that it is good for teenagers to wake up later anyway.

Shut up parents, you are wrong. Your younger kids will be ok coming home an hour earlier. Back in the day, kids got left home alone all the time. Parents are just too overprotective now. They will be alright home alone. Unless you are dumb and leave poisionus chemicals where they can get to them, and you teach your 6 year old how to turn on the oven, then you deserve to have your house burnt down by the kindergartner who turns the stove on when he gets home from school at 2:00 pm

Seeing as in surveys the teachers, students, principal's associations, teachers unions, etc. have all voted against it.....I don't see it happening. Sorry guy.

Pushing it back 2 hours just pushes their lives back 2 hours every day, meaning if they normally get to sleep at 10:30 they'll now go to sleep at 12:30 by the time they finish extracurriculars, homework, etc.

It wont happen is trying to pretend that surveys show those groups are against it, when 85% or more of the same groups are FOR it. Opponents seem to think that lying about data and making things up and saying it loud enough makes it true. And people are so afraid of change that they believe it.

The thing is, I know at least a dozen teachers myself who are for it, and they are afraid to speak up because there are a couple of powerful FCPS administrators who are spreading misinformation and trying to get teachers and coaches against it. They're spreading fear and nobody is trying to stop it. It's the same old stuff - our way or the highway, sucker parents. God forbid we should come into the 21st century and do what's best for students instead of what's convenient for us.

9:40 is simply too late to start school day. The current proposal is DOA because of that alone. 9:15 is pretty much the latest acceptable start time.

Hey Keep on Truckin - interesting viewpoint - someone who doesn't think that we are coddling the older, presumably more mature high school aged children by letting them sleep one hour longer, while we are coddling the younger children by actually providing supervision to them. I fail to see the logic. By the way, aside from the fact that I would not let a 6 year old stay home alone afterschool, even for one hour because that is looking for problems, it's not allowed in this county. You would probably end up at the very least being investigated by social services and at the more extreme end, arrested if there's a repeated pattern. However, the reality is that is what will happen, especially in areas where there are fewer affordable child care options.

There are libraries all over the place where low income people already drop off their kids for the afternoon.

Fine, start the middle school kids earliest. Then the elementary and then HS. Or, build more secondary schools and start them all at the same time.

The survey on FCPS website seems suspicious to me. A person could take the survey about the proposed schedule changes as many times as he wants in order to skew the results.

Yes! I agree with you about the survey set up. I took it and thought wait a min, something was not right about the survey. So much for fcps staff/sb's intergrity.

I got an email today from some swim team group telling all the team members to take the survey 20 times each or the couldn't swim in the next meet.
