getting a ticket for avoiding a stop light.
Posted by: Tthom ()

i didnt even think there was a law in fairfax about "avoiding" a stop light until i got a ticket for it. I was pulling into starbucks and when i pulled out i got pulled over and was charged with the bull shit of avoiding a stop light. When i went to court next week i pleaded not guilty. It turns out avoiding a stop light isnt a crime unless you plead guilty to it. so if you ever get pulled over for some kind of shit like that? dont plead guilty.

Avoiding a Traffic Control Device? It's as serious as any other violation- you'll be found guilty if the police officer says you did it.

no its not. if you pull into starbucks and come out another entrance then get pulled over for avoiding a stoplight, you dont have to plead guilty, i pled not guilty and didnt get charged for this "serious" offense.

You don't have to plead guilty to anything, and you DID get charged with it. Maybe you didn't get convicted, but that's too bad. Start driving like a normal and responsible person (AKA, stop trying to cut in line) and you won't be pulled over anymore.

I wish that the police would start enforcing this statute in my neighborhood to try and stem the tide of rush-hour commuters that cut through to avoid a nasty light nearby.

Thanks to them we're getting traffic calming measures put in, which bottom out my car. Thanks!

Just wondering, did you actually stop your car and go into Starbucks before leaving the parking lot?

people get busted for this all the time going from 29 in cerntreville to stone road by cutting through the park and ride lot. Well-deserved tickets, too. Many times the assholes fly through thre, blocking busses and almost hitting commuters.

I find it hard to believe that a cop issued you a ticket w/o seeing you drive through the lot w/o stopping. Did you ask whether or not he saw you pull into the lot or go in/out of Starbucks? Did you show him the cup of coffee you just bought?

Yeah, I think you're full of shit. You got caught and now you're trying to make excuses. The police officer, the judge, and me don't believe a word of it. Take your punishment and shut the fuck up. Good day to you, sir. I said Good Day!

to all of you who insist that people should be punished severly for such a violation, i say, "go fuck yourself" as it's the polite thing to do. it's not a big deal. i figure it's just one more level of what i call the darwin effect; people get killed for doing stupid things. if that means not looking if there is a car coming your way, so be it.

It's up to the person minding their own business to be more responsible, rather than the person driving the vehicle that's capable of killing someone? Yup, you're still an idiot.

Gravis - you're an idiot. Have you ever seen a small child hit by an asswipe that couldn't wait 15 seconds for the light to change, so he drove through a gas station parking lot, cruching into a kid?

I have!

I hate dickheads who do this. People get hit all the time, but the drivers seem to think it's their right to do it.

How was it the kid's fault (who was walking right alongside his mother) for stepping out from behind a gas pump and getting smacked by a car trying to beat the other cars around the corner?

So why don't YOU go fuck yourself.

I hope you didn't get pulled over by either of those two ffx county cops whose cruisers were parked under the "No Parking" signs while they enjoyed their cappucinos from starbucks.

I called that in . . . can you tell me why two police vehicles are parked under "no parking" signs and two officers in uniform are standing in the line inside starbucks? No Sir, but I will report it to the SOD at the Franconia District.

Bad Cop . . . No Starbucks and Croissant . . . what is this world coming to?

they can eat... i would prefer they do it on their off time. however, leaving a car running with the head lights on, blocking three or four cars in and taking your sweet ass time just isnt right. i mean, the car was just sitting there blocking anyone from parking in front of the place. if i did such a thing they would give me 400 years in jail.

So, you would prefer that they don't eat for the entire 10+ hours that they are working?

Do you take any breaks to eat while you work?

if they are working 10+ hour shifts that is fine, you make a good point. however, parking right in front of the place, blocking in cars, burning gas, in the way of other cars trying to park, and leaving their squad car completely unattended is just flat out irresponsible.

I don't dispute that at all. I can understand the need to stay in the car if the department wants them to stay ready to be dispatched to a priority call, but they should be out of the way in a parking space.

Ok, most PDs run 12 hour shifts and some run 8. There are no lunch breaks. I agree with not parking behind other vehicles and blocking them in, but if a cop parks in a fire lane and the place they are in catches on fire, they will get the call on their radios and probably move their vehicles. Chill out Good Samaritan.

I got popped for this 20 years ago: "Evasion of a Traffic Control Device".

I'd been stuck behind a drunk doing 15 MPH under the speed limit for the last few miles, and I clipped through a gas station to get around him.

Paid the ticket, and done. Since then, I can't count how many people I've seen slow down in front of a gas pump so that they could claim they didn't like the price, or some-such.

I'm skeptical about an Officer faulting you if you actually went to Starbucks. If true, post his name... I'm sure he's written a LOT of bogus tickets.

On the surface it may seem innocuous at first. However, it's stupid, dangerous to blow through a parking lot or a gas station or a shopping center/strip mall to avoid stopping at a red light. You arrogant people can't wait like the rest of us?

Unless it's an emergency there's no need to be reckless and endanger the someone because you are in a hurry.

If you wanna break the rules go right ahead...but save the tears and our time by not bitching about what a moron you are because you got caught.

Three times that I saw this charge in court, not one involved someone driving through some private property to avoid the light. Two involved people changing lanes (turn to straight or vice versa) when light changed and the third involved someone going through the light and making a legal U-turn. On each the cop said no traffic impact meaning nobody had to take evasive action as a result of the driver's actions. Two resulted in convictions; the third was dismissed.

Common denominator on all three involved younger drivers and occurred after 10 p.m. My guess is cops were looking for an excuse to pull someone over and check for DUI.

I have a commuter lot by me that is on a corner with entry/exit on both roads, people cut through to avoid a light and FCPD sometimes sits in there. They watch them come in and go out without stopping, then go grab them.
