While I don't know the situation in this case, there are always two sides to a story. People should learn about HOAs before they buy a house, HOAs have their good points and bad points. HOAs can give citations and charge you fines for infractions, some fines can accrue interest. If those fines get too high, a lien is placed on the property. Once it goes beyond the value of the home, the HOA has the right to take the home from you. They would have to take the case to court but if you signed paperwork stating you understood the policies and procedures of the bylaws, you don't have a leg to stand on. If you can buy outside an HOA, do it. Most HOAs have strict laws, you cannot plant, paint, build, or change anything outside the home without the consent of the HOA. This includes the structure of the home: windows, trim, doors, roof, siding. You cannot remove or add plants, trees or shrubs. Outside the house belongs to the HOA including the back yard, they have control. I had a friend who lived in an HOA, they changed their mailbox. They got a letter from the HOA telling them to remove the mailbox setup because it was not one of the styles the HOA had approved, HOAs can benefit but they can also be a pain in the ass. HOAs have set standards, don't live in an HOA if you cannot live by those standards.

I know someone that happened to. He was trying to make a point. He lost two very expensive condos as a result.
