Thinking about Kumon for my son for elementary math skills (mult, div). Do any of you have any feedback on the Kumon experience for kids?

Kumon was bullshit
They didn't actually help me; they just give you shit; and then their little "educators" all don't speak english, and don't explain anything properly. The Kumon system is retarded.

try Sylvan.

If you really want to get your child extra help, get a one on one tutor. Those centers are just out to take your money. I've heard all they do is give kids worksheets to do.

It's true that Kumon is basically selling proprietary worksheets. However, they are exceptionally effective worksheets, because they are designed to force children to master basic computation skills before moving on to the next level. I sent all of my children to Kumon when they were in second grade. It was the only challenging math they got in second grade, and they liked being challenged. Kumon also gave them the foundation to become unusually strong math students later on.

i started doing kumon when i was 5-6, finished around 13. at the time they were very focused on mental math and speed. my mom made me do it every day and i hated it but when i stopped at 13, i was able to coast through the rest high school math, up to calculus. now it's only useful for calculating tips or converting from metric.

these days, kumon seems more classroom oriented-it was a tutor with 3-5 kids once a week then lots of homework.

i'd recommend it, but don't force it down your kids throats. i had kumon classmates who were freakish (at math but also socially ackward) because of their own underachieving parents.

as long as we are talking about weird japanese educational systems, anyone else here do suzuki?

My child has been using Kumon for a while. We liked it at the beginning. It helped my child in math calculation skills. But over time, the benefit is no longer that visible and we feel more pressure on its monthly bills. Then we accepted the advice from our neighbor, and started to do the worksheets on Beestar. To my surprise, she loves the 10 quick questions very much and it really helps kids thinking. Pretty great. Plus, I also don’t have to drive her to kumon.
