Outdated computers at FCPS

In the world of ipads, iphones, cloud computing and touch screens, a school system with $2.5B budget, can't replace these computers in one elementary school? Really?

Love the floppy drive.

It depends on what they're using them for.

In case you haven't gotten the 2 billion emails and tweets from Ryan McElweeny, FCPS was in budget cutting mode this year, not looking for new shit to buy that will just gather dust. If it's not stolen first.

Hey, if they work, and do what is needed, save the money.
Plenty more opportunities to spend money later on.

Everything is outdated in FCPS, with the possible exception of offices at Gatehouse.

Most school buildings are past their useful life, just continually patched up.

The bus fleet is even worse, absolutely decrepit for the most part. Fortunately, the law won't let them keep a bus for more than 18 years, or they would let those things wheeze and spew noxious fumes for 20 years or more. I won't let my kids ride those junkers.

Buying computers? Really? How about asking one of the vendors to donate some computers. It's called locking in a customer base from an early age.

Remember when FCPS did that w/ Giant receipts to get Apple equipment back in the early 90's? It never really worked out since PCs were making their way into homes and came to dominate the mindshare of students compared to what they would experience at school.

I doubt anyone is going to get locked into HP or a Dell or whatever because they spend an hour a week on one at their school.

Sad thing is they float 30 year bonds to buy computers that last 5 - 6 years max. People vote yes on that shit in amazing numbers. That's like getting a 30 year mortgage to buy a car - it makes no sense and will eventually be unsustainable. Schools will be paying off loans in 2030 for those PC's in the OP's post.

But those computers are garbage.
They are about the same age as what I used when I graduated from FCPS, and that was over 10 years ago.

Way too much money is spent on technology in elementary schools. The money should be used on reducing class sizes. Every teacher in my school got a new laptop this year, for no reason. The ones we had were fine. This is elementary school. There is so much waste in the technology sector.

Fairfax will not replace these computers, they may replace the teachers computers but only every 4+ years?

The PTSA/Parents will replace the computers. At our FCPS school the PTSA/Parents raised over $80k in the past few years to replace all the library computers that were about 10 years old and to buy all sorts of technology for the teachers. Unfortunately not every PTSA or group of parents can raise this kind of money.

Dumb ass FCPS pays about 50% to Dell for the extended maintance on each machine. They should skip the maintenace and just buy 1 additional computer for every 10-20 computers deployed, this would save $$$$$$$.

FCPS needs to re-evaluate the warranty/extended service they have on their hardware as most schools have at least one tech person full time and there are floaters that help the schools. Keeping half a dozen spares on the shelf is far cheaper than the "contract" terms they pay for and when the machine are 2-4 years old, if they are still in service, there is Craigslist and ebay for buying like machines to match the antiques they are keeping in service.

Think outside of the box FCPS and use your head.

A lot of times when we upgrade to new laptops, they use the old ones to create mobile labs for student use.

When the TOTALLY get rid of laptops (as in - they're not even good enough for a mobile lab anymore) I think they pile them up in a warehouse somewhere. There was a story in the news awhile back (I think someone posted about it on FFU) about some fairfax county worker who stole a bunch of laptops from a warehouse somewhere.

Like most government institutions, FCPS pays inflated prices for outdated computers that the manufacturers would like to unload. What do they care? It's not their money they're spending. This is the reason the government sector is almost always more inefficient.

This computer looks like it's serving as a "card catalog" in a library. Probably good use for it.

There are modern computers/laptops in every FCPS school. They have to upgrade often, as the software used for SOL testing changes every year. That's where the racket is folks. You want to bitch about school funding, that's where a huge chunk of it is.

FCPS had these (even in elementary schools) but they were STOLEN - they were replaced with crappy HP chinese PC that were totally un-reliable (required "IT maintenance contracts").

q700-system.jpg

the montiors on the units were beautiful engineering / photo quality monitors - STOLEN - replaced with chinese crap PC monitors. those monitors beat today's LED screens hands down (if you discount the invonvenience of picking one up, having already purchased it, there would be zero reason to not be still using it).

Apple monitors were big, beautiful, and expensive in the 1990's and early 2000's (before HP chinese PC and crappy LED monitors) (they were not always dress up like the one above, no)

engineers got 27" monitors (large even by today's LED standards)

I remember when my nieces (late elementary school for them, late 90's or early 2000's) reported to me that their nice slim footprint apple computers were replace by hp china box PC. They said they didn't like the PC, the kids didn't like PC, and the teachers kept having to reboot them, and that they had no idea why the school "took away their apples". (and the monitors were smaller, 1/2 the street value of the ones stolen)

Its no wonder what it is important is falling apart in the county, with the One Fairfax initiative, paying money for political correctness initiatives such as LGBTQ, dozens of spoken and written languages, police chasing criminals, and expensive consultants for and lawsuits from these initiatives. Yet with increased property values not stemming the flow from around the world, some of the highest taxes and rents in the country.

The money needed for computers is currently being used to market our gun confiscation plans. Tell your kids they do not need a computer at school. Yes, China has just topped the world's smartest kids but we believe that your kids will be ok. We have started planning a new school program that involves 4 study halls and 2 gym classes per day. Digital calculators will be provided for the basic math portion.

Don't worry it will go to a good cause , DAJAX will be buying a hundred new guns with his share

Your Democrats should have thought about what the legal repercussions will be upon the states budget with their gun bans not reasonable regulations
