Bicyclist are out of control
Posted by: Had Enough ()
Date: June 09, 2014 10:29PM

I honestly believe that the bicyclist in the area are getting out of control and need to be reigned in.

Every morning while driving to work I pass Herndon High School on Drainsville RD. You have to be very careful and pay close attention to everything going on given the activity in the area. There are busses trying to drop off kids, students walking to school not really paying attention doing there own thing, partents just vicariously stop to let kids out, and you have distracted student drivers doing nermerous things while trying to get to school as well.

This morning as I proceed to the parkway intersection some douche on a bike decides he is better then everyone else. He suddenly comes out of nowhere from between two buses. He cuts everyone off without a thought so that he can ride between two lanes of traffic and a median to ride through the next light and get to the front of the traffic light at the intersection. There is a bike lane, but that was not good enough. The rider then proceeded through the intersection only to immpede everyone behind him.

Unfortunately if someone hits him it will be the driver of the vehicles fault.

I don't think so, the cops have gotten tougher on the bicyclists these days. If they are failing to obey the traffic laws and cause an accident, THEY get charged.

Bikers don't have to follow traffic laws. Didn't you know that? And to top if off, they are plugged into their iThings and not even listening to their surroundings.

Unfortunately for them, when they go between lanes of cars at a stop light, go through red lights, etc., the Laws of Gross Tonnage apply.

Wrong, bicyclists are held to the same traffic laws as vehicles, hence why they are riding on the same side of the road as vehicles and technically are not authorized to be in sidewalks unless they are below a certain age as a minor.

If a stoplight is red, a bicyclist needs to stop. If they slow down, look both ways, and continue to proceed, they're in violation. They also need to obey stop signs, yield the right of way, etc.

I got pulled over by a Fairfax city cop on my bike. He said I rode through a red light. I didn't think so. I obey traffic laws. Anyway, he asked me for my drivers license! When I told him I didn't have one he asked for my ID. I did not have one. He got belligerent and told me he was going to impound my bike. He told me that I needed to have ID on me at all times. (Fascist prick) How was he supposed to write me a ticket? I told him to hurry up and impound my bike and I'll get it later because I would be late for work. Then he told me it would be too much trouble and paper work and let me go.

What a fascist prick.

Lazy is more like it. You're supposed to be carrying around ID at all times when you're out in public.

It's worse out here in the country (Western Loudoun), especially on the weekends. The bikers think they own all of the two lane roads with no shoulder, and never let cars pass. They try to wave you by them on hills or curves where you have no idea if a car is coming or not. Of course they can't be bothered to ride on the W&OD trail for whatever reason, and instead clog the roads. Somebody is going to gwt hurt, or wosre, one of these days.

Have some cheese with your wine you fucking cry baby. Maybe if cars followed the posted speed limit the problems would go away.

If you think Western FFX County is bad, try MacArthur Blvd, Glen Road or River Road in Maryland on a weekend. All of those young overpaid and full of themselves people from DC are riding their color coordinated outfits riding 3 abreast thinking it's the Giro I'talia or Tour de France.

I usually do (limit is 45 on one particular road, I ususally go 45-50) but I know others don't. And I don't think speed is really the problem, but the fact that vehicles can't safely pass without the risk of hitting oncoming traffic. If there was a shoulder, or they stuck to the numerous bike trails in the area, it wouldn't be a problem.

Bike riding is the worst of both worlds. If you ride on the paths then you are dodging walkers. If you ride in the street then you pray a distracted driver doesn't end your lift. Good luck with that.

If you think that carrying an ID when not operating a vehicle, boarding a plane, etc, is some sort of legal requirement, you are a fucking idiot that doesn't deserve the oxygen you consume as it shows you can't think for yourself.

Whatever vehicle you happen to be navigating, simply be mindful of others on the road along with you. Driving is a team sport, and the rest of us out there are on the same team as you are. Our team wins when we all get where we are going with ourselves and our vehicles still in one piece. Don't be the schmuck who costs us the game.

If you are slowing me down by impeding the proper flow of traffic by travelling below the posted speed limit, you are definitely NOT on my team. That goes for cars and bikes.

Its not just walkers. You usually have baby strollers, dogs on leash, little kids on big wheels, people with phones and ipods plugged in who couldnt hear an 18 wheeler if it came up behind them, and my favorites people who decide to sit and have a fucking picnic on the bike path.

Who can you complaint to..... I live in North Springfield/Ravensworth off Braddock Road and every Tuesday and Thursday evening we have cyclists from Audrey Moore come into our neighborhood and race the streets. They speed, ride 4-5 abreast, and refuse to stop for stop signs. I have complianed to both Mason and Franconia District Police Stations and nothing has worked. I don't mind sharing the roads but these streets are neighborhood streets where the speed limit is only 25 mph. These guys get up to 35+ mph. I've gotten to the point that I'm tired of complaining so now I'm just waiting for a cyclist to be hit so that I can stop and tell the vehicle driver about my complaints to the police that have gone unanswered in the hope that the vehicle driver isn't charged.

Bicyclists are super annoying. Its one thing to do it in a urban area but some of them ride their bikes in suburban areas where no bike should be. They put themselves and others at risk. The ones that ride bikes to go work are one thing but there are some that go out just to get their work out in during the middle of rush hour. Seriously WTF are you thinking? does that seem like a good and safe idea to you? If you have time to bike during rush hour when everyone is going to work you obviously don't have a 9-5 job so you can get your work out in at another time. You can tell them apart because A)they're decked out in full biking gear and B) they're super annoying. They don't follow laws and doing as they please. Call me ignorant but bicyclists are one of my biggest pet peeves.

Doubtful. Studies confirm that most males who cycle many miles are:

1) Gay; and
2) Impotent.

Along Rt 123 from Burke Lake to Crosspointe, I think the only place where cyclists stop is at the Lee Chapel Road Intersection, and perhaps on occasion at Silverbrook. It's amazing, how careless they ride - or perhaps its done with intention?

Anyways, I know that cyclists haven been hit along this route

According to Fairfax County Data:
"Fairfax County had 84 reportable crashes involving bicycles in 2011. This includes six hit and run crashes where a bicyclist was struck and the motorist fled the scene. None of these crashes involved the death of the bicyclist. In 51% of the crashes, the bicyclist was held at fault."

The rest of the story, is that many other incidents were determined with "no fault" assigned.

With the majority of accidents being the cyclists fault, it's no wonder they have such credibility issues in their plight

Ive lived in Ravensworth since 2003 and yes the cyclists ride through once or twice a week. So what? The echelon never gets much bigger than one car wide by 4 cars long. That only lasts at the very start then it breaks down into smaller groups. When they ride at 25 mph guess what - they are entitled to the road just like a car. If they are going the speed limit its their lane too.

As to going 35 mph, sure cyclists can hit that coming back on Queensbury for about 1/2 a mile. Other than that the course you describe is basically flat (there is one other slight hill that is about 100 yards in length. So what? Cars routinely go 35 or 40 on those roads and they weigh tons. Why are you worried about some 190 lb guy on a 20 lb bike?

Do they roll through stop signs? Yes just like cars do. That course is there because except for crossing Braddock with the light and Hemming its all right turns. There are only 3-4 stop signs on the loop and they are all right hand turns.

Finally, the loop is on 25 mph lightly traveled roads in the evening. Do yourself a favor; next time they come flashing by at an unimaginable speed of 16-25 mph get your kids and show them some adults having fun and excercising. That way they might not grow up to be a fat, timid pussy like Daddy is...

@keep telling yourself that - and this is the attitude that the cyclist has towards you. And this is why they feel they can break all the laws they want, while wanting you to watch for them when they dont even watch for themselves.

The bikes dont ride on the sidewalks or front yards they are on the road. I guess if the guy lets his kids play in the street like Inverchapel or Queen Elizabeth Blvd. they are going to get hit by something - Id pick a bike over a car but thats just me.

@ fat, timid pussy-I ride with a friend who lived in that neighborhood and his description was far less idyllic than the picture you paint. He and other friends living in the neighborhood have told me it was quite common for that bike echelon as you describe it to emerge from a side street, blowing through the stop sign and emerge in front of cars having the right of way, forcing them to make a hard stop. There were instances of near misses with pedestrians legally crossing streets, including pedestrians pushing strollers and walking dogs. There were also at least a couple of cases where your bicycle echelon forced KIDS RIDING THEIR BIKES off the road. He also told me things were somewhat better last year.

I don't have any personal experience with this group, but I have run across similar behavior by smaller groups on the trail to Mt Vernon and up Four Mile Run. These are not "share the road" cyclists. They are GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY cyclists.

As I said I lived in Ravensworth for over 10 years just off the route and had lots of friends that lived on the route. No nonrider was ever injured by any cyclist on that loop. Many of us found it pretty cool to see the riders. I rode the loop but only alone and not with the group - its a very tame ride. Flat, lots of visibility from yards, walks and crosswalks. As I said there are only a couple stop signs.

This is much adeau about nothing...

The bikers have no legal obligation to let you pass, they have, under law, just as much right to use the roads as cars do since they are counted as vehicles. This is exactly the problem though, bikers hate car drivers because of statements like these and the lack of respect given to them while on the road. Drivers just need to be more patient, we all think we're entitled to get everywhere as past as possible because our time is more important than everyone else's. Drivers hate bikers because many of them are unaware of, or choose not follow, the traffic laws. The solution to this problem is this, better education and training for both drivers and bikers. Drivers need to be trained to respect bikers and how to drive with them and share the road. Bikers need to be better educated about vehicle laws and their responsibilities when using the roads. What needs to stop is the culture of entitlement on both sides, though more so drivers, because they more often do not respect anyone else who may be on the road or sidewalks.

Perhaps a biker would like to explain and justify riding bikes on 123 down in the GMU to Lorton area when there is a perfectly good bike path along both sides of the road.

I for one am tired of bikers thinking they don't have to follow the traffic laws and then trying to generate sympathy for accidents, etc.

I put on several hundreds of miles on my bike each year recreationally and also commute an hour every day. I must say that a lot of bikers give the activity a bad name. They believe that on major, busy roads, they should ride. As a biker, youl feel like you are one part car, one part pedestrian, because in a way, the speed in which you go and the rules you must follow in fact make you feel this way.

The problem is that bikers think that riding on the sidewalk or bike paths is annoying. They often complain that it isnt' legal--YES it is legal in Fairfax and most other jurisdictions to ride on sidewalks. They also complain that there are too many bumps, broken asphalt, debris, and pedestrians. Boloney on all of those things. I've never hit or come close to hitting a pedestrian. I just slow down for a second, call out "on your right!" and pass them. As for imperfect paths, Northern VA is NOT thin-wheeled, European racing bike material. It just isn't. There are way too many distracted drivers on the roads. This is MOUNTAIN BIKE OR HYBRID BIKE country. It just is. To demand you ride on the dangerous congested road (I ride on suburban, noncongested roads all the time) but to demand to ride on these roads and put everyone in danger and demanding everyone look out for you because of the type of bike you have is like walking around in snow shoes and demanding Fairfax County drag in snow machines to cover the ground year round. Silly.

We should obey all traffic rules and fear cars for what they are- one ton killing machines. Drivers could also use turn signals more often and allow bikes ON bike paths the right of way at cross walks, but most of the onus of responsibility is on bikers.

I grew up in this area, and used to race with a local team - I figure I used to put on close to 10,000 miles a year on the roads in this area, or a few hundred miles a week. I also drive constantly, as my work commute is 40ish miles per day.
For folks who think there are no real cyclists in this area, and everyone is a Lance Armstrong wannabe, you are wrong. This area has loads of pros, neo-pros, and there are races all over the region with serious athletes who are paid to do what they do. Or they are racing for local colleges. There is major talent around here.
I also have been hit by cars egregiously violating simple things like, hey, stopping at stop signs.
The dichotomy in perspectives is clear - cyclists act defensive against drivers, and drivers are annoyed by cyclists. Most cyclists in this also drive - and many are irresponsible while operating either vehicle.
Many cyclists are also pretty aggressive while riding, sometimes to be noticed by cars - but disobeying traffic laws is absurd, foolish, and dangerous.
Cyclists screwing up is more noticeable to drivers, because it is not "in the norm" for your driving experience. Everyone expects to be cut off by some dick on their commute, but when a cyclist is slowing things down, or in the traffic flow, it is not the usual type of "dickery" that folks driving expect.
In my almost 40 years of living here, the sheer stupidity of people of all sorts on the roads is increasing. I am amazed on a daily basis at the moves people make, in cars, on bikes, whatever.
It is clear that people are wandering around in a fog while they are getting where they are going, how ever they are doing it. The bikes vs cars thing is old. All of you, everywhere are morons. Just make a vague effort not to kill anyone or be killed out there.

and yet the SAME ones yelling "share the road" will blow by you on a narrow trail like around Burke Lake without even slowing down.

And why would it be OK that the cyclist didnt "want" to hit anything. Driver of a car is not TRYING to hit anything either, dumbass. o_0

Moving motor vehicle operator's are responsible for the most crimes than any other group in a transportation mode. Everyone knows it. The police know it. You know it. I know it.
To be whining about a lone bicyclist is just purely imbecilic nonsense.

Do you know that Virginia State Law about crosswalks? Even if the light for crossing in one is green, if you hit a pedestrian, in which is including a bicyclist, in one (on a non-motorized vehicle in the crosswalk) with a motorized vehicle (including a moped) you are at fault. So this also means when a motorized cehicle operator driving any motorized vehicle, is approaching an intersection with a crosswalk, you better be going slow enough to stop/avoid hitting a/if a pedestrian. Including one on a bicycle, entering the crosswalk.
Even if you have a green light. This is state law NATIONWIDE. Not just in the state of Virginia, as well. And no local jurisdiction like FX City/County can override a state law.
And even if they are not in a crosswalk, you better not hit one, either. You might not get charged, but your insurance will have to pay out for any injury's and you will be paying higher insurance rates forever for it.

So. The moral of the story here is SLOW DOWN. Be a COURTEOUS driver of any given motorized vehicle. Be careful. And what about mentally disabled people? You just going to run down anyone out there on the roads that might get in your ignorant way? No. Jyst slow the fuck down.
Besides. It will save gas. Wear and tear on the vehicle. What? Are you filthy rich and can afford to burn it all up forever? No. Most are not. And if you keep driving like an imbecile, if you are rich, you will not be for long.
