We are thinking of getting a 2 door Jeep Wrangler. It is V6 and comes with a soft top and hard top. We owned a Jeep Liberty before so we know it's not always the most comfy ride especially over bumps but maybe being a 2013 car they have improved. Anyone have one or have any pros and cons about it? Mostly want it just for a fun car to run around in not really for long car trips or vacations.

I don't know any pros or cons of the JW, but that reminds me of the following story:

I was driving south on West Ox Road, a few years ago, and came to a slow standstill. This was before it was divided. So, about 6:30 a.m., going 3 mph, snow and ice everywhere, and this deer comes over the ridge, and runs into my car, before doing a 180 and running back over the ridge, unharmed.

The sense of anonymity, which is false I might add, this forum provides for losers, wanna be comedians and otherwise chicken-shits, the perfect platform to talk tough, be macho, or ridicule and belittle others which they cannot do in their pathetic real lives.

You are likely to get much more valuable information from a total stranger who drives/owns a Jeep Wrangler at a gas station or a shopping complex parking lot.

17 mpg... nearly 4 bucks a gallon...

but yeah I think the short wheelbase would be very uncomfortable ride especially on our shitty roads.

not to mention those are usually pretty big tires which cost alot and wear out fast as well..

Well we are going to test drive it Saturday so I guess I'll find out. Consumer Reports didn't rate it that well.

They are cool looking vehicles, and like the previous poster put, they have very thirsty engines.

Plus the cost of repairs=not so great.

I had one (a 2012). The backseat (although OK once you are back there) is basically inaccessible. It is hard to get people or groceries back there or anything for that matter. Folding down the rear seat hardly gains you any room. I had the soft top and it took 25 minutes and two people to raise and lower it so you basically quit using it at all. The new Pentastar V6 is a nice motor (I didn't have that) but it wasted in that vehicle IMO. It IS a very capable off road vehicle though and the on road handling and ride are greatly improved over the past. HTH.

I drove it out cross country (out west) and when I encountered some high (but fairly normal for there) winds, the hood (which has these antiquated rubber latches) lifted like 2 inches at 75 MPH...not very confidence inspiring. The soft top felt like it was going to come off, too, it lifted up like 6 inches in the middle at speed.

All the problems aside, Jeep is legendary. It is a simple machine, will last forever if you take care of it. A Wrangler will find admirers even when parked next to the most expensive of Italian super sports cars or European ultra luxury vehicles.

I've seen valet fighting to park a Jeep over BMWs and Jaguars. And I have seen hot girls ride into popular hang outs and drive-ins in shiny new Corvettes, and leave with total strangers in Jeep Wranglers.

But then again, Jeep is not for everyone. Just watch this video learn a bit about its history:

I own one. Its a purpose-built vehicle. If you plan to fully use it for the purpose upon which it was built, buy a Rubicon; it will save you money later. If you're buying it for practicability, comfort, or looks, you'll likely be disappointed in the long run and shouldn't be driving a Wrangler to begin with.

If you've got the space and the money, I say go for it. I keep my old jeep (grand cherokee) around for just such a purpose, and you never know when you might have some flooding or snow to drive through. Last good storm this year I headed out to have fun on the unplowed dirt roads nearby (snow was just up to my belly, and this with a bit of lift and over-sized tires) and ran into a half-dozen guys who doing exactly the same. Even helped out one guy who got himself a tad stuck - tons of fun.

Get a new Dodge Durango! The features and quality are amazing.

No Durango or other vanilla SUV is a substitute for a Wrangler. Take the top and doors off in summer, put on the hardtop in winter; nothing is more fun or versatile. Maybe an old Defender, but you'd spend a fortune to buy and a larger one to keep it running. Consumer Reports hates the Wrangler because they have no balls and always prefer a "tampon on wheels." The Wrangler is a great second or third vehicle.

The new generation of jeeps have lost their character and look like plastic molds of their former selves. Wide fender flares, significantly underpowered, too many without lockers or low range, lack of decent skid plates, touring OEM tires when they should be equipped with ATRs, plus that hideous looking grill, you pretty much have to drop another $15-20k just to turn it from a shopping mall chariot to something serviceable and trail-ready. It's almost like their market is entirely built around buyers who want to look like they are adventurous when the only thing they are conquering is curbs and shopping carts at the local Walmart.

Get a Toyota FJ Cruiser or Nissan Xterra. The reliability and longevity over a Chrysler product is worth it.

People driving wranglers in NOVA are pathetic losers. I've got one that I use on the farm, take off reading and to the beach. I put a 305 V8 in it and it really hums. Screw gas prices. All my cars are company vehicles so all expenses are write offs. The more gas the better.

Aye, and they always looked cheap and fake to me. I've never actually driven one but I hear they're pretty much a car, and a quick peek underneath shows nothing special.

Toyota FJ Cruiser - eh, it's pretty much toyota's attempts to reclaim a bit of off-road cred they haven't really had since they killed the 80 series land cruiser. With a bit of modding I hear they're fine, but if Nicdoot wanted to go this way I'd advise finding an old 80 series and using the extra money to fix it up proper.

But that's not what Nicdoot wants - he/she just wants to play around a bit in an open jeep. I say more power to 'em. Are you gonna get transmission and electrical problems? Probably. Get 'em fixed, gas it up and drive on. When you get tired of it you should have no problem finding somebody to take it off your hands. No reason this can't be fun.

If your car shopping includes looking up car reviews on fucking Consumer Reports, then just buy a Hyundai. The Jeep world doesn't want your type.

I can't comment on the current Jeeps Wranglers, as the Jeep I owned was from the pre-Mercedes days. Back then my assessment was that it was an overpriced and lame status symbol for those who just wanted a fun car to drive around town, but if you were looking for something fairly reliable that could go almost anywhere in almost any weather, then it should be on your short list.

However if your heart is set on a Jeep like vehicle, then GET A JEEP WRANGLER. Don't get some pale imitation like the Toyota FJ Cruiser or Nissan Xterra, or for that matter one of the other Jeep products.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser and Nissan Xterra are for loser wannabes. They are wimpy pieces of junk. Might as well buy a Camry or other generic, gutless, boring (and reliable) sedan. While the Jeep is nothing to brag about in terms of quality, when you take off the doors and roof, the fun factor cannot be beat.

This will be the fun car to take to the beach with the top down, put bikes on the back, etc. It will also be a commute car but we owned a Liberty before and we know it isn't the most comfortable ride. Looking at a 2010 sport with only 8,000 miles. And it's in the most beautiful blue color. I've always wanted a blue car. Hey girls get to pick the color at least. Gotta get used to driving a manual again but hubby is the one that will be driving it most. Thanks for all the advice!

The Sport model Wrangler is pretty low end. Hold out for a Rubicon or a Sahara if you can.

Do not get anything older than a 2012 - the engine "Pentastar" is much easier on MPG and has 300HP.

I own a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited Sport - just enough technology, while the rest is a serious JEEP.

Unless you are going way back - I owned a 1983 5 speed CJ7 - fun and unstoppable. Never had any issues mechanically.

The new penta star motors are much smoother than the ones from before 2012, though not much more efficient.

To whoever said some ignorant shit about the FJ cruiser, quit riding Chrysler' s schlong. The FJ is as capable if not more so than the equivalent Wrangler. FJs can be had with ATRAC, hill decent control, rear locker) Hell of a lot more comfortable and practical than a wrangler (just because you can take the doors off does not make it practical)

It's also far better quality than anything Chrysler makes.

And much easier to take top off. So much fun with top off the FJ!

The Jeep has a solid front axle, much better visibility all around, has a tighter turning radius and is narrower than the bloated FJ. It has removal doors and top. Parts are available everywhere. For off-roading, the FJ doesn't even compare.

For on-street driving, the FJ is better made, rides smoother, and has better side-crash ratings. Then again, the same can be said for any sedan, which would be more practical than a poser FJ (which is being dropped by Toyota because it is so unpopular).

Got 2 Jeeps transferred to Dulles Carmax. Got our favorite color blue and are loving driving around in the new Jeep. Only drawback is having to store the hardtop in the house. Wish they broke down somehow. Almost like a puzzle putting soft top on but with practice it will be easier.

It's really not unpopular. For that type of vehicle it's very popular and sells relatively well. It just doesn't generate the +400K unit kind of numbers that Toyota wants to see from things like the Camry and Corolla. At about 20K-25K/year it far out-sells both the Sequoia and Land Cruiser. It still will be sold elsewhere in the world but since Americans are pussies who think a gravel parking lot is "offroading" it's basically done here.

Last that I checked they're still the vehicle with the best % value retention of any. I'd buy one as a general vehicle. For real offroading I'd agree that a built out Jeep is better. Or better yet one of the original FJs.

Buy a Discovery. You get all of that, plus a nicer interior and a 375hp engine.

Yes it does sit higher up. I am over 6 feet tall and have to climb in. It's higher than an SUV more like a truck.

I don't have to pretend I am living life I am having a blast with it now. Life is short and we want to live. Fun to have the wind in your hair and be in the "club".
