Data Recovery

Anybody know of a place that can do data recovery on a probably-dead hard drive in this area? I would also prefer to not take it through the pants on the price.

Go commit a high profile internet or financial crime and FCPD will do it for free.
Or, you can come over to my house and I'll do you for free.

MicroCenter in Vienna does a great job. They were able to recover almost a decade of pictures and documents for me when my hard drive "died"

FYI - Most of these places just throw some type of recovery CD in the CD drive and that reads the low level sectors on the harddrive and recovers the files. If you're half way computer intelligent you can probably find a recovery utility CD that will work fine.

Sometimes all that is needed is to reset the master boot record(one command) and the whole drive comes back.

Now if the drive is physically damaged like melted in a fire or unwater in the Ocean for a month or two then you'll be paying a small fortune.

The hard drive is my secondary one; Windows and system files are on a separate hard drive. The bad hard drive clicks like it's trying to cycle up, repeats a couple times, and does nothing. The system itself will boot to the Windows logo, then reboot. I can't access BIOS, and taking the faulty drive out lets me get to Windows.

Also, my system time is screwed up, and won't automatically synch.

I've suspected for some time that my computer was on its last legs, being 4 years old and all. It looks like it's time to finally take Ol' Yeller behind the shed.

Urgh! I hate that power up, power down drive sound with the clicking. I think that has something to do with the read arm broken some how.

I've never been successful getting data back from that sound. I've been tempted to pry open the drive and see if I could find that problem, but never followed through.

Oh well... thanks for the "time to backup my system reminder."

After you get past this crisis, can I recommend Mozy? On-line back-up of all your stuff, unlimited storage for around $50 a year. Works fine.

Nobody REMEMBERS to back up; you need to automate/schedule it. In addition to Mozy, all my data is automatically backed up to an external 500GB HD. My wife has permanent instructions that, the event of a fire, she grabs the kids, the pets, and the external HD.

That's a really good idea. I've been operating under the "Checkpoint" backup method, instead of the "Autosave" one.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm still running through options.

Guys, please tell me how to save data correctly and more efficiently? The fact is that I want to replace an old hard drive, that has dozens of programs, systems settings and so on, with a new drive. Recently I became interested in this question, because lately there has been a lot of information and data accumulated that need to be preserved and in no case. I used for this special software. https://thinkmobiles.com/blog/best-disk-imaging-software/ You can look here for examples of programs that will help you in this question. Having used and tested these matter disk image programs, we have few more things, comments and aspects to add about each of them. They are diverse in price (even few free apps), functionality, design and efficiency. As a user, you should seek features like file backup, system backup, backup to cloud, disk cloning, compression rate.
