Well, people of color are certainly well aware of the contempt and hatred that low-class white-wingers and the GOP in general do indeed have for them. And unlike downscale whites who are dumb enough to vote regularly against their own self-interests, lots of blacks and Hispanics are smart enough to go out and vote for the other guy.

Blacks voting for Democrats is a lasting legacy from the era of the Civil War when their owners convinced them plantation life was as good as it's ever going to get. The record clearly shows that few ever tried to escape to the North in spite of what modern day revisionists try to tell you and those who did choose to remain behind could always be counted on not to tell the Yankees where the family silver was buried.

The liberals of the post-Civil War era were the Radical Republicans. It was Radicals who led efforts after the war to establish civil rights for former slaves and fully implement emancipation. After weaker measures in 1866 resulted in violence against former slaves in the rebel states, it was Radicals who pushed the Fourteenth Amendment and statutory protections through Congress. Just goes to show that hearts may be hard to change, but party labels are not.

Yes unlike his wife FDR was a racist, even for his times, and certain New Deal programs were administered in a way that excluded blacks from benefitting. Others however did work to the advantage of blacks, so that by the time FDR died most blacks who were allowed to vote did vote Democratic. If you have something that says otherwise, please post a link to a reputable source.

FDR got 71% of the black vote in 1936 and got over 60% of the black vote in the next two elections. Truman got over 70% of the black vote in 1948. No Republican presidential candidate since has gotten over half of the black vote, although Eisenhower in 1956 did get almost 40%.

Curiously while blacks were voting heavily Democratic in the 1940s presidential elections they still were as likely to identify themselves as Republicans as late as 1948.
