is Greg Sullivan a good football coach? he is now 0-16. this is his second year at this marshall. Last year he went o-10 and now his 0-6 or 0-10 most likely. Will he be asked to resign? When can they get a good football coach? W

Two other coaches interviewed for that position, and did not get the job. They are now head coaches at other schools with winning records in the county.

Sullivan has won as a coach in the past. The talent trying out for the football team has just been awful over there. They got some okay classes coming up, they're going to go 0-10 this year but will likely win atleast a couple next year.

I just wanted to speak to a couple points.

First off, Coach Sullivan has NOT won as a coach in the past as the above poster stated.
He uses his previous job at McLean HS as proof of his coaching prowess.
He was an assistant over there when they had a few pretty good years, not great years but pretty good.
He was head coach at TC Williams and had average to below average results.

Whenever a school hires a new coach there's always an article about how great this new guy is. I don't think anyone ever looks into it any deeper than reading the article.

AND even though Marshall did not have any talent to speak of this year they have had some good players over the past handful of years, but the coaches don't know who is who.
You have kids who can't catch playing receiver and the kids who can catch are not.
You have a quarterback who can't throw a ball 15 yards and much better candidates who are not even being trained.
etc.
This is a coaching problem!
The players don't get to decide who plays where or what plays they are going to run!

The quality of the kids playing at Marshall is not much different than the other local schools such as Falls Church, McLean etc., so what is the difference?

Coaching?

I think Marshall is an IB school committed to global solutions to society's most pressing problems. Maybe they can declare Model UN to be the main fall sport and get rid of football. The only people who would be sad are the schools that try and schedule Marshall for Homecoming so they can count on a victory.

Let's not ignore the difference between a good football program and teams like Marshall.

I'd like ya all to Google 'what makes a good hs football coach' or a similar phrase.

If you can find some good articles I doubt that you'll envision Marshall's coaches while you're reading.

So what do we do?
The AD hired not only Sullivan but his predecessor Lapthorn.
I doubt that the AD will relinquish any control and let people with more experience hire the next head coach.

And just because the AD used to play football doesn't mean that he knows how to hire a good coach!
Whatever your opinion is I'm sure you can agree that they are doing a lot wrong!

But, but, Marshall has the "best DSA in the nation":

http://gcmstatesmensports.org/index.cfm?action=main.adnews&ID=23337324

The problem with GCM now is that a lot of people there hype the shit out of it and try to make it sound better than it is. The football field is one place where Marshall can't make up the score.

Programs rise and fall. Look at Marshall Baketball. Last year Marshall won the Liberty District and this year they are mediocre at best. No reason varsity football couldn't win a game by 2016.

It's always entertaining when I read posts from the people who say "doesn't matter, no talent, they suck".
It makes me think it's the AD who is posting it.
He makes statements like that to stick up for his choice in coaches.
And I quote: "these kids just aren't any good but the coach is doing a great job".

If that were true the other sports in the school would suck as well.

The basketball coach and the baseball coach (maybe other coaches) tell their players that they don't want them going out for football. That is the policy.
And the AD does nothing about this. And yes he does know about it.

Sullivan was hired because he was a Marshall alumni.
Lapthorn which was the previous coach was hired because he is a friend of the AD, but after a 4 & 26 record for 3 years that fell apart.

The right coach can make a difference in any environment.
Let me say again: if there were no athletes at Marshall then all sports there would suck!

There's not a single player on their 3-7 basketball team who would have led the 0-10 football team to a single win this year or last.

You have a head coach that doesn't win a single game in two years, you fire his ass. No if's and's or but's...Blaming it on a "lack of talent", shows zero coaching accountability. Sullivan was an average player and a below average coach. If Marshall wants football success, they need to hire guys like Tom Verbanic, former Westfield head coach, or the Bendorf Brothers, Mark, formerly at Robinson or Pete, at South County. You find somebody who knows what boot strapping a successful program is like.

Why would a good football coach ever want to go to Marshall? The kids there are soft and the parents are incredibly whiny. No one who wanted his kid in a good program would live in that district.

The reason a good coach may want to coach at Marshall would be for the challenge.

There are a lot of stories where the right coach rebuilt a pathetic football team.
It's built with the knowledge on how to do it for one thing.
It's about more than football.
Just Google it!

I think that we should start emailing quality football programs & coaches asking that they apply for the job!

Just FYI:
Sullivan did not change the plays that his predecessor Lapthorn used! And remember Lapthorn was 4 & 26!
All Sullivan did was make a few minor modifications and added a bit from the McLean bag of tricks, but that's all.
A really really sad effort.

Maybe you should apply for the position!

Just checked, and McLean was 27-23 over the same five-year period Marshall was 4-46. Not exactly a football power, but better than averaging less than one win a year.

I would love to!

Ha!

I have an interest in youth football around the area, but just because I can watch a movie and decide that it's terrible doesn't mean that I can make a better movie!

Seriously though, Marshall needs a good coach that the community and the assistant coaches can get behind.
Marshall parents need to start a conversation with the AD.
This AD though is 99% rhetoric and very difficult to talk to.

Tyler White won't go out for football because his mom won't let him (because he's going to be a basketball star) and because the basketball coach doesn't want him to.
Plus his older brother Andrew didn't go out for football either because the basketball coach didn't want him to.

This is one of the problems at Marshall.
Athletes that won't go out for football.
Plus of course there are kids who don't go out for anything who could make a difference.

They seriously need a coach that these young people can look up to.

Christian who?

Umm Doug and Grant played football briefly last year and their basketball coach had no problems with it. Never once has the basketball coach told their guys not to, but its the parents that pulled both of them from the team. And why should they try out for a 0 and whatever team when the prime sport from them is basketball and to work on bball in the preseason.

I didn't say I knew anything about "doug & grant" or what their coach may or may not have told them. I don't even know who they are.
I was however responding to CCcalvvess with what I got right from the horses mouth.

Plus I'm not proposing that players who really don't want to play football, whether the team is good or bad, come out anyway.
But if the program was built up then kids who do want to play football and are willing to work hard have a place to play.

And I can't answer for you why someone should go out for an 0 & whatever team, but maybe a good football coach could.

Yes - that's a bad coach and that's what I'm on about.
I also know a baseball player where Sullivan tried to keep him from going to a late summer baseball event because it would interfere with 1 or 2 football practices.
The guys mother had to get the AD involved.

We need a coach that understands that the student athlete benefits from playing multiple sports.
I should have said earlier that I was aware that Sullivan tried to keep his football players from playing other sports as well. It's just that he was unsuccessful at doing so and so it didn't really matter.

Nobody in their right mind would take the Marshall job. They should have done everything they could to keep the old guy regardless of his record. You can't make a competitive football team out of the kids at Marshall: there are too few of them and the ethnic breakdown favors other sports amongst males. Here is what Marshall should look for in qualities for coaching candidates:
1. Someone who is good at playing Madden on Xbox.
2. Someone who can "kick" a paper football through upturned fingers.
3. Someone wo has ever watched a football game at any level.
4. Goldie Hawn- she did a great job in that movie "Wildcats" so who knows?
5. A homeless person who will coach for cafeteria food.

That's about it as far as who they can get. Hell, I'd rather coach the Redskins than them

Re: Marshall High School football team

i agree!
when you watch high school football you see the players and the plays that the coach has decided on.
if you have a bad team then it's unacceptable to blame it on the kids.
it's the coach who is supposed to be training and preparing the kids and the coach who decides on what plays the team will run.

a few years back Marshall had the players to have a decent team but didn't because of bad coaching (Lapthorn).
the wrong kids in the wrong positions and repeatedly running plays that didn't work.
then Marshall hired a new coach (Sullivan) who continued with the same poor coaching.

the right coach would look at Marshall as a challenge because the program has deteriorated into nothing over the past 5 years.

this all depends on the AD and who he is going to hire.
he hired the last 2 coaches so there might be an issue there.

Re: Marshall High School football team

I agree!
And what you refer to is completely lacking at Marshall!
The football coaches - including assistants - have no relationship with the kids whatsoever.

I heard someone else say it somewhere in these forums but I'll say it again.
It's not just the head coaches fault.
We need a head coach who is a leader who can whip the assistants into shape and get them on the right path first of all.
And the ones who don't fit in need to go.
Then as a team of coaches they can build the kids up into student athletes who are proud of themselves.
And if Marshall is able to do that - they will never go 0-10.

Yes - it is about much more than winning!

Coach Henry - I think that parents and other concerned citizens aren't aware that there is such a thing as the type of coach you are referring to.
A lot of us in the community didn't ever have a good coach that helped teach us life lessons and who were role models.
And there is the thought that when it comes to sports that winning is everything because of the influence of professional sports.
But those are adults who play for a living.
This is about kids and raising the next generation of Americans.
It's about much more than football.

Now don't get me wrong - I want to win too!
It's very frustrating to see play after play fail without changing anything.

Press release from http://gcmstatesmensports.org/:

"George C. Marshall High School would like to introduce and welcome home its new Head Football Coach, George Masten. He started his coaching career at his alma mater, Ferrum College where he played, working as an assistant offensive line coach. He spent the last 5 years coaching football at George C. Marshall High School.

In addition to Coach Masten’s coaching background, he is an educator who holds a master’s degree in education with a specialization in special education. He has worked and currently works as a special education teacher at George C. Marshall for 5 years. We are looking forward to having Coach Masten lead our program for many years into our future."

I guess, after going 4-36 over 4 years, and 0-20 in the last 2 years, they hired from within! Holy smokes.

Crashing out in the district tournament? They ended in 3rd place and played Pot Fallls close. Sounds like a hater. They made regionals for second time in a row

Half the teams in the conference make regionals and they lost in the first round to go 10-15 on the year. That only sounds good compared to the 0-10 record in football. Just stating the facts.

I don't understand. If you're not a hater why are you commenting about this on the Marshall High School Football program. And considering that besides last year, Marshall didn't make regionals in forever that's still pretty damn impressive. Guess who didn't make regionals? Edison, Madison, Fairfax, Falls Church to name a few. If you're really just stating the facts then their seasons must be way more disappointing. Maybe talk about them instead?

The Marshall mentality on display. Why worry about being good when someone else might be worse?

Only way to get better is to realize this is a recipe for continued failure and mediocrity.

A recipe for continued failure? Last time I checked that recipe meant a liberty district championship and coach of the year. Try respond with a logical response next time. Typical spoiled Vienna kids.

Hey
I'm wondering if the general public is aware of how bad the football training is at Marshall. You mostly hear about how bad the players are or how bad the head coach is but no details as to exactly what is meant or why are they bad.

Did you know that in football practice the kids aren't allowed to hit each other?
The only time they make contact with other players is in games.

Did you know that the defensive players are not allowed to interfere with a play being run by the offense. They mostly have to just stand there kinda like traffic cones.

Did you know that they are making no effort to try and incorporate some passing plays even though all the other teams around here have a fair amount of passing.
That's just not within their skilset.

Did you know that the coaches encourage undesirable kids to be team leaders because they have a big mouth but nothing else going for them (colton hodge) instead of encouraging good kids who are also good athletes to lead. This discourages the whole team. And the coaches let this idiot make speeches about how good he is and how the team needs him.

Did you know that there is also the problem of assistant coaches standing around during practice not teaching anything. There are enough coaches so that they could be teaching football skills and tactics instead of whatever it is they are doing.

So now that we have a new coach and we will be rid of the class of 2014 we can start building a football team that doesn't need to go 0 - 10.

Man it's awesome that we didn't go 0-10 because coach Masten is a boss. The football program is progressing every single day and after the win last night against McLean 28-17 I'm proud to say that everyone's stereotypical views of Marshall HS are about to change.
Practice is flowing, the coaches are caring but disciplined, the players are hard-working and impressive, and the team moto is Gain Respect.
If that doesn't about sum up the work that Coach Masten has done than I don't know what will. Every moment is about not only perfecting the play of the team, but also teaching the players how to become men worthy of the respect they earn on the field. Dedicated to the team and becoming a very momumental pillar of wisdom Coach Masten looks to lead the statesmen to a over .500 season, winning the conference and then winning states.
And I believe we have a good chance at that too. So let's get it statesmen.

Colton Hodge was a great athlete. He’s passed on now from a accident, he a great athlete. Hard headed yes, but that was his personality. If you would’ve got to really know him. You would know that. Instead of coming on here and talking shit.
