So we all agree FFX is overpriced and some would say full of a-holes. My quandry is were to go to get better value, somewhat slower pace yet maintain the quality of schools and intelligence of population. I mean moving to some backwater filled with ignorant racists is out.

Some parts of Montgomery County MD and Howard County MD are pretty nice.

Basic problem is that the perceived high price of living here is result of the sometimes unperceived high reward of living here. Be careful what you wish for.

If you're living there and earning money there, France is about as bad as it gets. Good healthcare though, but much worse bureaucracy than here. Buying a house in England or France is an exercise in frustration and delay.

If you're looking to date well out of your league on a budget, in a place where being an American will pretty much get you laid, I'd head for South Africa or Estonia. I hear Lithuania is also good but it's pretty regularly trampled by drunken idiots from elsewhere in Europe.

I was talking about the percentage not the aggregate - its a relative comparison. That said there are quite a few more single parent families overall than I would have guessed. Blacks are most prone at 67% (Pacific Islanders are the lowest at 17%). Its a shame that any of these percentages are so high.

My friends just moved from Fairfax to Calvert County. They built a gorgeous home on a beautiful wooded lot in a great neighborhood with top rated public schools. Their kids are playing all types of sports and living the good life. The people are all very friendly and they have plenty of services nearby. They are 35 miles to DC and 25 to downtown Annapolis. They keep their boat a few miles away on the Chesapeake Bay and there are plenty of safe activities for their kids on weekends. He works in DC an breezes home on Rt 4, she works part time in town.
I've lived in both places and Calvert is just more relaxed, people are more down to earth and services are fairly priced and done by your neighbors. Once I finish my work here in Fairfax I can't wait to go back the "The Land of Pleasant Living"
