George WAS NOT Generous with toppings

If this seems trivial, then you're not a pizza junkie.

When I visited the legendary Generous George's, and ordered a half sausage, half whatever, they made it clear I'd be charged for two toppings.

That was a long time ago, and the shittiest experience ever ordering pizza. No matter how good it was supposed to taste, I never went back after learning of such a stupid dumb policy. Not about the cost, just the F you principle to the customer. Could never understand the loyalty to this joint.

Too many other options.

Last time I was there was for some friend's kid's party. It was in the basement area. Smelled like a backed up sewer. Was barely able to eat even one slice of pizza. Glad to see that place shut down for good.

I used to work in the original Hechinger's across the street from there. George came in the store from time to time. He was a nice guy but I was never really impressed with the pizza.

The one in Alexandria always creeped me out for some reason when I was a kid. It seemed like a haven for child molesters with the tacky wall paintings of kids and pizza and animals. Was really bizarre and felt more like the circus.

The whole place just really depressed me. It seemed to bring out my inner Holden Caulfield.

I'm glad they shut that piece of shit down.

I used to eat at Generous George's on occasion. The food wasn't mind blowing, but sometimes a Georgie Combo was just what I wanted. "Positive pizza" was the slogan and I thought the place did have a fun, positive vibe. I'd see George in there fairly often until maybe 2000 or so, when I heard he moved -- to Florida, I think. I heard that he's had some serious health issues recently. I always admired his success in building that business. Wish I could thank him for the good memories I have of that place. It's been sad to drive by, particularly at night, and see it empty and dark. The exterior now has huge signs in the windows advertising the coming of the new restaurant. I'll probably give it a try, but it won't be the same experience.

Went to GGs all through my childhood - baseball team parties, etc. My family used to go there for birthdays until my mom found out that George supported anti-abortion foundations. She was a massive liberal and I guess that's why I turned out conservative :)

Does anyone know WTF is going on with this place?

The sign said coming Fall 2014, its now Fall 2015. Alexandria really knows how to encourage business.

I suspect there is some debate about how they are going to add "mixed use" to the property.

God, you're fucking stupid.
You do realize Alexandria doesn't own the property? It's property owners and private business that control that control it. It has nothing to do with the government.

And even if one is using your fucking stupid logic, it's STILL fucking stupid when you can see the development 1/2 mile away in Carlyle.

Yeah I'm the fucking idiot. Permits for bringing the building up to code, etc., etc. Who grants those, the magic permitting fairy?

The developers at Carlyle have deep pockets and can "afford" to eat the wait, not small businesses.
