forum upgrades/suggestions

Cary,
One thing that I've always hated about forums is that anywhere you use your email address, some fucking spamer spiders up all the addresses and proceeds to be an ass. I think it would be best for everyone if you altered the script to alter 'myaddress@mydomain.com' to something like 'myaddress [at] mydomain [dot] com'. There are several variations on the theme you could use like [@] {at} (AT) and so on. They grab the addresses to if they like to the address. You can make it a link to http://joyce.eng.yale.edu/~bt/school/report which is a spam trap. It's generated randomly so dont try to send people copies of a page you find. You will notice that google has cached 5720 copies of it. Anyways, that is my suggestion. Anybody else want to bitch at Cary for features? :)

I like how new posts are indicated on the forum list for the Fairfax general section, but it appears that you have to open each other subfolders below before you know if there is anything new. any possiblity you'd change it to indicate from the one main index exactly which folders had new posts? thanks

Gravis -
I have been looking into obfuscation techniques for awhile. I will implement one soon. Registered users can choose whether their email address is made public or not.
Overall, web based email harvesting bots have decreased dramatically in the past few years. Spammers now use techniques such as Dictionary Attacks and address book harvesting viruses to get the majority of their target addresses.

Hellchild -
Yeah, that pisses me off too. Right now this software cannot tally up all the new threads and posts inside a folder and display the "new" count on the main page. The next version of phorum (5.1) will have this ability. If the new version is not released in the next couple weeks I am going to make one folder for "Specific Town/City forums" and have a flat list of all the forums in that.

everyone -
There has been a lot of noise for moderation in these forums, particularly for immature and off-topic posts. If a post is completely irrelevant or a personal attack, I will delete it. Completely deleting "stupid" posts is not the way to go, and amounts to censorship in my book. I would, however, like these "stupid" posts to be marked as such and invisible in the default view.
I have put a good deal of research into implementing a "slashdot-style" moderation system where posts can be marked by anybody as Interesting, Funny, Troll, Flamebait, etc. For those not familiar with slashdot, if a post receives enough negative moderation it is hidden from view, and the user must click a link to view the "junk" in the thread that has been filtered out. Similarly, posts that receive positive moderation will be more prominent than their lesser counterparts.

All of this community involvement/concern is great. If anyone else has a suggestion or idea, please reply here and let me know. Thanks.

- Cary

I'm glad I stumbled onto this topic, I was about to post a new thread about the off-topic and rediculous topics I just read.. cough..marijuana seed topic & the pussy dealer easy money scam ;)...cough..

the arrest/ticket search is very popular amongst highschoolers at chantilly, and is used on the computers there, so theres a good chance of 'big brother' watching over these boards. i think this is a wonderful idea for a board and I don't want it ruined by random idiots, so please clean up dem wack posts.

word up ... happy mommas day

Yeah, as far as completely junk topics, just ignore them and they'll eventually find their way to the bottom of the list. If the topic is 100% junk and offensive I'll delete it, but even posts about marijuana seeds have some small merit and I don't want to delete/censor them. By the people for the people. And a lot of "the people" are fucking stupid.

It would be nice if you could be able to mark everything as read instead of new. I signed up and suddenly things from way back when (very specific) are new again. Eh... really only a problem when you first signup.

Since the thread was bumped - how about installing TapaTalk so it's easy to browse and post from our SmartPhones?

From a while back:

http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/40/637474/638208.html#msg-638208

I really appreciate the minimalist nature of FU, however there is one additional feature I would like to see: A 'date started' column on the forum start page. Perhaps immediately next to the name of the original poster, for example:

Started by: Mr. Misery @ 07/28/2011 05:50PM

This could help us sort the original news article or thread from the subsequent ones, or eliminate confusion over old threads. Support? Oppose?

The features I want are (in priority):

1. Ability to hide a thread (don't want to see it anymore).
I guess there would be a "Show Hidden Threads" button too.

2. "Like" ("Unlike" and "Dislike" would be nice, too)

That suggestion has been made since 2005, and it isn't getting a response for a reason. Local school sports would be considered on-topic, right?

I thought you weren't around in 2005, eesh? Didn't you say you only started posting in 2009, nik?

It isn't hard to log in and report the offending posts. There is no reason to heed your advice.
