Anyone remember the Cranberries show on the mall in 95 that started a riot and was broken up by police??
Posted by: SL Grad ()

It was a school day late in 1995 and all the area kids skipped to attend the show. In thier first song rioting broke out and people threw beer bottles at the lead singer and police on horseback came in to break things up. Someone even jumped up on one of the police horses. My friend got stepped on by a horse. Anyone else remeber this? Were you there?

I remember that shit. We wasted our time taking the metro down there only to turn right around and head back after one song. Back then, if a show was cut short like that you almost always had a riot on your hands. Unless it was a Fugazi show (Freedom Plaza '91). Then Ian just made you feel guilty and you calmed the fuck down and protested 'peacefully' until the DC gov't restored power. That was the nineties...we were still in charge, and you could get away with murder. Then came Sept.11 and having fun went out the window. The agents of fear and suppression have the upper hand now that there is no more drinking on the mall for the fourth and what not.

Yes. I was there in the front. About 10-15 idiots started to push their way forward and crashed the gates surrounding the stage. The show stopped briefly and security asked everyone to move back. About 30 seconds into the second song, they stopped the show and escorted the band out back to their trailers. I was like WTF? This is the Cranberries, not GWAR.

I was at the DC101 Chili Cook-Off in 00 or 01 when someone nailed the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls in the face with a shoe. He said "Goodbye DC" and they walked right off the stage. Show over.

I know... right? Ut could have been anybody and there would have been a riot. Everyone skipped school, got loaded, and went to that show. I just remember the beer bottles smashing on stage and the little lead singer girl running away. Then the horses came.

Bill Glasser (on air name, Will Robinson) was the promotions manager of WHFS back then. Beforehand, he estimated the crowd to be about 10,000 to the Park Police and more than double that showed up. The Park Police had put up a snow drift (chicken wire and balsawood) fence to keep the crowds back from the stage. When the show started the crowds made their way past the fence and many onto the stage and the show was ended. A vintage guitar was stolen and pleads were made on the air for weeks to return it. The band was pissed and so was the US Park Police. Ever wonder why we don’t have many rock concerts at the Sylvan Theatre any more? Amazingly, Bill now works for America’s Most Wanted TV show.

Heh, now you're dating yourself. WHFS. Station used to rock (until January 2005 when it switched over to Mexican polka music). When we're up in Baltimore, we would listen to WHFS on 105.7 as it carried the same format as the old 99.1 Now its an all talk station....Damn...

I was only 6 years old but I remember that show very well. I went down there expecting to see my fave band as the opening act. The Wiggles. When I realized that the Ausie sensation wasnt going to be there, They couldnt find their keyboard player as he was asleep on the Metro, I threw my Sippy cup of Milk at Delores Oreardon's gap toothed gurn and she ran away. Sorry for every that I spoiled the showed. im like, not offering ticket refunds or anything.

Yeah, there were people that climbed up in the trees to see over the crowd, we road the metro down & stopped at a porta-pottie to burn a fatty.. Just trying to be discreet, but it was obvious everyone came to party. Lots of people walking to the mall with beers among other things. When she stopped the after the 1 song to bitch about there guitar that was stolen & they wouldn't play anymore songs till they got it back, needless to say it didn't take long for the crowd to turn on them, from all the BS it took to get there to see this surprise free show. Then bottles started flying & then the cops on horse back. I remember a helicopter flying nearby & we got the hell out of there, cause I figured tear gas might not be far after the horses trampling people. Crazy ! But glad to see it all go down in person. Like someone wrote earlier, that was when people still had freedom to take over for a little while & when music was still dangerous & raw, real & the youth could get wild, without being considered a terrorist. I have never figured out what happened to grunge ? As far as I'm concerned that was the only real music since the 60's-70's, the whole 80's gay hair band & top 40 crap sucked for the most part. Thanks !! to all that were there for a good time !!

Apparently everybody was there. Reminds me of like when the Pilgrims landed. Everybody skipped hunting and gathering that day too.

Meanwhile, lots of people are hot at 24. You should have seen Samoset's daughter!

Hell ya, I was there as well. I went there to see the band...though I wish I kept that "die for oil" sign for kicks. I didn't care too much about the protesting part, I just went to see the band.

Pretty awesome day to skip out of work for a few hours and blaze up, the place was packed. They went on real late and during the second song the cops on horses shut it down because they had run past their allotted time.

The Post story was full of BS, either from the cops or the reporter, likely both. The claim was that it was shut down due to moshing, but they were playing Linger, nobody was moshing to Linger. Then they claimed that rocks and bottles were being thrown at the cops, which was total crap because there were no rocks to throw from the grassy field. The bottles being thrown were the plastic water bottles, which was kind of a thing at the time, following Lollapalooza, where everyone threw the bottles up in the air for fun, no one got hurt.

Our school was on a field trip that day and when the teachers saw the concert they let us have lunch there. A few of us sneaked up to the speakers. I remember people stage diving. Our teachers had a hard time getting us all back together when the riot broke out.

It was maybe 15 k people, not that many on that big field. O'Riordan got all upset that a "poor girl" was being crushed against the stage and asking people to move back. O'Riordan asked people to stop pushing maybe twice and then walked off with the band.

Still don't know why the high schoolers rushed the stage for the Cranberries. When the story is retold bet they claim it was Guns n'Roses.

The lost guitar belonged to one of the men in the band. If they'd played the concert would have been a pleasant but forgotten memory. But since the concert was canceled I still recall how pissed we were at the Cranberries.

Too bad too, the weather was great, it would have been just another cool HFS concert if the band hadn't gone emo and walked off.

This day popped in to my head today for some reason sitting here at work, and so i figured i would see if there was an article online... and Oh my i can't believe this is the only online posting i found about this day. Me and my buddy skipped a college class to head down there. We were too far back to see WTF it was that started the riot! but when the horseback officers started rounding us up like a cattle heard trying to get everyone off the lawn and leave the area, we jumped in with the (cattle) crowd that vered their own way yelling back..trying to stay whether or not the show was to go on or not ... Rebels! yeah we were pissed that we only heard 30 seconds of my (then) favorite band after skippin class and having to drive thru Southeast along S Cap St, which back then the way that area was, was not the smart thing to do for some kids from Southern MD. Fun times!

When you skipped school, did you skip to riot or skip to see a band? Why would you riot if you came to see a band? Unless they stopped playing after song 1. Then I’d be pissed. If I paid.

And they certainly were better than any of that nigger jungle shit you hear today. These niggers have very little musical talent at all. They can't do much of anything (except maybe dance)

This is weird, I'm worried that I may have started this thread eight years ago. But I don't think I did. I literally was just talking to someone about this the other day. I was there, it was kind of cool, the concert definitely got affected by a raging crowd. Someone stole the guitarists guitar. There were definitely cops breaking down the show. At one point the lead singer came out and chastised the crowd. I think it was, "senior skip day", for anyone graduating in the year 1995 at any ffx county school. Free shows on the mall, Ziggy Marley was there a week before, it was cool. However this one got out of control.

Where were the DC cops....with their tanks, and their bombs, and their bombs, and their guns? Are they still fighting?

I once knocked the bottom out of Dolores O'Riordan. She was not an especially good fuck but she gave fantastic head.

Yes, I was there. I blew off work in Baltimore and took the Metro from Silver Spring down to the mall. We got one and a half songs, and then the thing was cancelled. The lead singer had her guitar stolen, too. Not a good showing by the DC crowd. I spent the rest of the day at the Smithsonian. All in all, it was still better than work!

Saw some posts saying that the bottles were plastic. Maybe most of them were, but I was under some stage lighting posts that were getting hammered by glass bottles and there were shards raining down on us. I think that the park police and the cranberries were trying to ask the people to back up, but only the people in the front could hear them and the people in the back pushed forward to hear better - and chaos ensued. The park police started using their horses to try to push the crowd back a bit, but since the people in the back were pushing on us - it didn't go well. Someone near us panicked and sprayed a horse with mace, I didn't see what happened after that because that caused full on chaos and we had to get out of there.

Now that she’s dead and this event is such folklore, I feel like it’s like Woodstock where 5 times the number of people who were actually there claim to have been there. I was though...it was just as others say. Short, crazy but totally mid-nineties. I guess I was one of the lucky 10,000. Been looking for me in the background of all the recent articles. I found a pic of a friend I metro-ed with who always claimed he made the stage. I never believed him until now!
