1964 on that's the time the US was getting into Vietnam with lots of troops, The USA has had observers around the world since before WW2.

After Korea the US military started working with outside the box warfare ideas as they knew SWHTF in several places in the world, that's how the US Army Special Forces evolved as well as Army/Marine helicopter units that were experimental in the Korean War . The US Navys SEALS came about in the early 60's from their beginnings as UDT divers during WW2 to provide a naval special warfare support unit. The USAF also had their special units with the most famous in Vietnam being the Pararescuemen the PJ's who rescued downed pilots.

The Congo was supposed to be the hot spot in the early 60's then it became Vietnam after Democrats made up their minds

The were hanging out with the Boatniks back in the 60's, but some units did patrol in the brown water deltas of Vietnam
