Police say a northern Virginia driver has totaled a newly purchased $300,000 sports car by driving too fast and hitting a tree.

Fairfax County Police on Saturday posted a photo on Facebook of a badly mangled McLaren 720s sports car leaning up against a relatively unscathed tree off the side of a two-lane road in Great Falls.


Police said the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Facebook post said the $300,000 import had just been purchased on Friday.

Police attributed the crash to excessive speed and reminded drivers to slow down.

Yes, I was there the morning that happened. Lady had her two kids sitting up on the deck of the convertible, distracting, I am sure. Could not see what was behind her, and ended up on the hood of the Ferrari.

I own a Ferrari and a 911 and I drive the Ferrari extra, extra carefully. The dual clutch is too fast sometimes and the car isn’t that well balanced compared to the 911. That said, my 23 year old girl’s ass is more fun to drive than both. But it’s not that much cheaper.

Probably around 10 720s in Fairfax County. I've seen 3 different ones in Tysons alone.

I leave it in Comfort mode and Auto, and it will go from 4 to 7 in an instant. When it’s in the 7th gear, it’s under 2,000 rpm and just feels sluggish sometimes.

Yes, I can switch to Sport and work the paddles myself, but I don’t want to wrap the car around a tree like this McLaren Guy.

One thing I do like about the Ferrari dual clutch is that it 100% sounds just like a F1 car switching gears.

I actually feel sorry for the guy. The dealership had video of a customer taking delivery of the car on Friday (assume it was the same guy) which has since been taken down. He seemed so happy. We all make mistakes but usually not of this magnitude and not publicly. Now he’s probably dealing with a reckless driving charge, the possibility of license suspension and all of the financial implications as well as physical injuries. I assume he was going to or from Katie’s to show off his car. What a let down - the joy of a new vehicle turned into a mangled mess just hours later. Still - very lucky he didn’t kill someone else when he lost control of his new toy.

Having worked in Tysons for 30 years, clearly I don’t know the people that typically buy these cars. 30 years ago I would have said Iranian exile. Today likely someone who made money in the NoVa technology sector. Also, just as likely money came from Loudoun as Tysons.
