The fact of the matter is that the union boys don't fight fire but once or twice a year because there is no fire around here. The administration is good at keeping them busy with endless drills and maintenance and PT and cooking their firehouse meals. When not doing any of the above or mopping floors then they do their laundry, wash their car or plan for their off-day sideline jobs (carpet cleaning, roofing, etc.). True heroes.
Most of the skilled action occurs on the medical side and even thats not rocket science if you are trained well and have a cool head. The fact is, besides the bullshit alarms, the situation in the suburbs is tailored for volunteers. Do the training and execute. The volunteers show up for the action - not a paycheck. Volunteers could easily handle 50% of the call volume if they were properly recruited, incentivized and organized. A well tuned organization is not going to tolerate a high percentage of dawgs and sluts.

There is no need for volunteers in Fairfax. Aside from events where they do standby they do nothing. The county is stuck with these ticks because the original stations were volunteer. It's a joke. The amount of money spent on training these people to never do their joke is laughable.
